That "howto" left out the biggest piece - the trucks weren't driving backwards. They started apart while he was in the split position, driving forward, and moving closer together. Then they played it in reverse. I don't care how good your steering system is, it's physics, the trailer would still drift driving in reverse for that long because of the location of the kingpin. That said, even moving forward with that much precision in trucks that size is still a pretty impressive display of their steering control.

Ron, please read the Hot-To from Volvo, they are ACTUALLY driving backwards in the video, it was not just a video trick:

"Nilsson said the drivers of the trucks played key roles. "What they did is fantastic. I don't know if you have tried to drive backwards with a truck but it's not the easiest thing," he said. "And then [to] keep it in total control when spreading apart is very, very hard."

The trucks go backward in the video because "we all know that going in reverse is a bit more difficult than going forward," Vilhelmsson said. "We felt that would be the ultimate test, to have the trucks go in reverse with someone standing on the side mirrors performing a side split. And we knew that if anyone would be able to do that, it would have to be Jean-Claude Van Damme."

They ARE actually going in reverse, and if you watch the video it's actually two diffrent style of truck. One is a standard 18-wheeler with a trailer, the other is a box truck that is all one unit. The box truck is the one that moves away from the 18-wheeler...the 18 wheeler stays in the same spot, just moving in reverse. This dramatically simplifies the process, but it would still be difficult to keep the 18 wheeler with a trailer moving backwards in a perfectly straight line. Still impressive.

I know they're saying they did it backwards, I just find that incredibly hard to believe - in order for that to be true, you need more than a steering system. There would also have to be sensors in the kingpin to detect movement, and the ability to dynamically control individual wheel spin on the TRAILER, not just the truck, so any variations such as an imperfection in the road, wind, uneven tire pressures, or the slightest movement of the steering wheel by the driver could be compensated by supplying power to the wheel that needed to move to balance it out.
