If I'm going to live overseas for a while, with no residence
in the US, is it possible keep a bank account open in the US,
can I give them the overseas address, or give the P.O. a
forwarding address.

thanks

I just called my bank today about this, but I am moving permanently out of the US. It might be different for a different bank but this is what I was told.

Web banking will work anywhere in the world. I was told not to change my address for web banking, as that needs to remain a US address, but that I could change my residency address if I wanted to.

However I will retain a US address with family so I probably won't change anything-but you should indeed be able to keep your account.

The only thing I know of that may be an issue is for using your credit cards online.

We have people being denied because they fail the fraud screen due to their IP address being different from their billing address on file with the credit card bank.

Usually if people want your business you can make arrangements to fax the front and back of the card to prove you are in possession of the card at the foreign IP.

I don't see why there would be any issues otherwise to temporarily change your address have the mail forwarded by the PO if so.

Thanks, I'll call and see what they say.

update: this is for HSBC, they said I don't have to do anything
just sign-up for paperless statements. I can do everything online.

cool, this is good for now then

HSBC is one of the most international banks there is, so I am not surprised. Credit card really should not be a problem with a different IP-that's silly really given that a person could be on holiday. But I can see the logic of flagging it for fraud.
