Who loves boxing? Have you watched the Pacquiao vs. Rios fight?

Greetings!

Who among you here love boxing or perhaps use to love boxing?

The recent Pacquiao vs. Rios fight was a good one. Although to be honest, I was expecting a knock out.

I think Manny Manny Pacquiao still has many of the skills that made him one of the best fighters in the world, but he still hasn't done enough to regain his place amongst the top-two fighters in the world.

Rios is one tough guy, but he was so overmatched in my own opinion. He was unable to test Pacquiao in any way. No one should have questioned whether Pacquiao's speed would still remain. He was in remarkable shape, and he'd had almost a year off.

The questions about Pac-Man were related to his durability and defense. While he did obviously demonstrate more head movement than he has in many of his previous fights, the speed disparity was so large that it made evading the punches rather simple.

Pacquiao's poise is, at times, an issue. He has a tendency to go into warrior mode after he gets caught with a good shot. When he does this, he abandons his game plan and becomes more vulnerable to taking hard shots. Rios was unable to land against Manny, and quite honestly, he had too much respect for him from the very beginning of the promotion of the fight.

He never angered Pacquiao before or during the fight.

Rios' only real chance of making this fight a brawl—which was what he needed it to be—was to anger Pacquiao and entice him into prolonged exchanges. Instead, Pacquiao was able to go about his business, and the fight looked like a workout more than a pay-per-view main event.

Pacquiao's next fight more than likely won't come against a fighter he has so overmatched from a speed standpoint. Whether he continues his rivalry with Timothy Bradley or Juan Manuel Marquez or faces another legitimate welterweight contender, Pacquiao's chin and will should be tested a little more the next time out.

Pac-Man should be happy and pleased with his performance, but he still has a lot of work to do before he rejoins the pound-for-pound best list.

What do you think of that fight?

Have you watched it?

Sincerely,
Louie Tugas

    Hi Louie,

I didn't see it all but I saw most of it. It was a great fight. I was pretty confident Manny would do it but Rios is a hard man.

I saw the Carl Froch fight too and having watched the Georges St Pierre v Jonny Hendricks MMA fight last week, I'm convinced some fighters simply can't lose unless they're knocked out.

Then again, that's probably not something new.

I was not paying for that.

I'll check it out when it comes on next week.

It's time for Manny and Mayweather to get it on.

Despite Manny's recent probs I'd bet at least two million people would purchase that fight and I'd be one of them.

I like both Georges and Jonny. They are warriors.

I am crossing my fingers that "Mega Fight" will become a reality.

Yeah, I hope he will anytime soon. He has proven something already.

He should retire before it's too late.

Anyway, we just don't know what's on the head of every boxer and fighter.

Rios talks about how fast Pacman was and cries at the end of interview.

My respect for Rios. Just be humble next time before the fight.

I personally watched the fight and it's really a good fight. I also agree that Rios is one hard guy, well maybe because he's way too young compare to Pacman.

You will notice in the fight that Pacman is really cautious. I believe he's a more mature fighter now than before, i believe it's because of the 2 consecutive loses he previously experienced.

Pacman is really great. I believe that really brought a change in the boxing world since Ali. Pacman is the icon of boxing for now and i doubt that it will change soon as MJs the icon of basketball until now.

  • I saw the fight and I loved it. I know some people complained that it was boring but it was really nice to see Pacquiao be more mature, intelligent, and strategic with each punch that he throws.

I just read that the the Philippine government froze his access to his hard-earned money over some dumb tax dispute. Are they evil? He's especially frustrated because he wants to help typhoon victims. They should just let Manny Pacquiao have his money already.

I can't help but sigh. Dirty Philippine politics.

I don't doubt Manny's ability to knockout opponents. But looking at Rios' previous fights, he's one tough guy. He took a lot of punches. He was still on his feet. Man!

Also, you have to consider Manny's speed and power has decline with age. He's no longer the invincible Manny we saw when he fought against Barrera, Morales, Dela Hoya, etc. But still he was able to beat this 27 year old tough opponent. I give him that credit. If he fought Rios at his peak, it wouldn't have gone through 12 rounds, IMO.

    Anyway, the fight!

Rios wasn't really able to bring out his fight plan/style/whatsoever. He fights at close distance, like a brawler. With this, all Manny had to do was to keep his distance and not to get tangled up with him, which Manny did. Manny displayed his impeccable footwork - come in, release his punches, and then out to the side. Before Rios could hit back, Manny was gone! This was clearly evident in the fight.

Although, there were times that Rios got him. But anyway, Manny didn't need to get too close to Rios to release his punches. He can fight at a certain distance (within his reach, of course), which makes it advantageous for him.

Also, Rios is an easy target for Manny as he doesn't have lateral movements. He's like a copy cat of cotto or something.

At then end of it, Rios is just too tough to getting knocked out. He took all the punches. Manny even acknowledged that himself. Manny said he hit him with all his shots and he was still on his feet. But then again, as a boxer, Manny is way too skilled, too smart, and too talented than Rios.

      I couldn't agree more.

You are pretty spot-on with what you have written here.

In fact, I found myself nodding my head my head several times while reading your post.

Also, I think Pacman is more careful now. He knows that Rios has a knock-out punching power.

I hope his next fight will be Bradley and if he wins, Mayweather is the next.

Pacquaio should rematch bradley first, then marquez ,if he has the balls to accept the 5th fight. If he comes out victorious in that two bout, the boxing world will surely clamour for a mega showdown with Mayweather.I think, both fighters are past their prime and this bout should had happened 3 years ago when both men are in their primes, but nonetheless this fight will still generate interest from boxing world or sportsworld. This fight still has a very big chance to shatter the boxing's record on fighter's purses, gate attendance and payperview record.
