I have always had a difficult time getting away from the job, always feeling like I was going to be late for work or something was going to happen while I was on vacation or on weekends. Now that I am working for my self and by myself it is even worse. I always feel like I should doing more or doing something else, writing a new article or putting together a new web page. Even on weekends when we go out to dinner with friends I have this feeling like I should be doing something other then relaxing. So my question is I know many people that work for themselves have this problem so what do you do to really get your mind off working and just take the time you take off and relax without thinking you should be doing something.

Working from home can be one of the most challenging things to do. Its not that working at home is inherently hard, its balancing working at home, and living at home.

I am a firm believer in setting this situation up correctly up front is the answer to many issues that arise later. Here is a list of things I suggest anytime the conversation of home start up is brought up.

#1 Get a dedicated cel phone. Keep ALL of your business related contacts, e-mail, Social marketing etc on this phone and NOT your personal one.

#2 Find a dedicated space in your home.

#3 Create a schedule for work. I use a split schedule 3 hours during the day, and another 5 late in the evening.

#4 Shut off you business phone, when you are participating in Family time, UNLESS you are participating in family time when you are within your scheduled work time.

#5 When "work time" is over put your work phone to vibrate, That way you are aware of what is going on, but not so sucked into loosing out on your family time.

#6 All business's have a slow period every year. I run kinda 3 things and all the slow periods for me are the week before Christmas and the 3rd and 4th week of January. That's when my family goes on vacation etc.

The bottom line is to set boundaries, and to stick to them. Just because you are your own boss does not mean you have to be the tyrant boss that works you long hours for no pay! haha

Write everything you need to do down and cross finished items off the list, with high priority stuff first. Do all you can reasonably do every work day. When you're finished, you're finished until the next work day. If you don't take a break you'll self destruct. It's important to separate work and leisure time.

I agree with establishing work hours. If you don't, your business is going to suffer for it because you aren't enjoying your after work time. It's important not to get sloppy with your start time and just sleep in. That will throw everything off schedule.

Get it fixed in your mind that working hours are work mode and your mode to forget work is after working hours. It won't hurt if you need more time to work some of the time, just don't make it a regular habit. Work-life balance is important to your well-being; enjoying what you do for a living can depend on that balance.

Write your list of everything you have to do at work, then don't waste any time getting it done right. It's amazing what you can accomplish by organizing yourself. I keep a wind-up clock on my desk to watch the time spent on tasks.

Yep, if you stress out too much with an important project, then you might end up on your back?

The human body can only take so much stress before it starts collapsing.

But l usually late at night go for silly voice-over or sendup type videos on Youtube!

Harry Potter, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, YT P**P are the best ones.

Or though Bear in the Blue House, sendups, and Micheal Rosen ones, can get pretty funny, DJO as well!

Lord of the Rings, the Roast Chicken, is very funny!

No matter how p**** off l get about work, this always makes sure l end the day on a positive note!

Yup. Finish work, enter pub and leave like your image, minus the wind up bit.

For the record, I'm the opposite of the OP. I always work feeling like I'd be better off relaxing somewhere hot.

I don't think this has anything to do with the work or schedule. It's anxiety and compulsion and you need to dig deep and identify why it "always" happens.

Seems like fear driven anxiety - of what might happen, what could go wrong, what mistakes you may make. Why do you expect constant "more" from yourself? Why do you think you are valuable only when working? What are you really afraid of?

Yep, me too, and l am in the middle of summer, (if you can call it that).

But apparently global warming is causing a mini ice age in Europe?

Yep, watch Bellakus Angels enough times with farm animals and bad weather and mud, and most would kill for a tropical location!

Nothing better than to sit at your laptop looking out at the beach with palm trees?

Hmmm, might be missing something there?
