Is it just me, or has 2013 been a downer. I'm speaking globally, mind you. For me, it wasn't that bad at all. But as I've thought about it, and looked around...it seems like 2013 was not as good as 2012...and we had the Apocalypse to deal with last December! You'd think that after surviving the Apocalypse, people would have made this past year the best...but it hasn't been.

War, famine, drought, terrorism, depression, fear, and stupid shit like THIS...and THIS...all seemed to make a comeback this year as opposed to hope, prosperity, and progress. Well, they did print and ear in a laboratory...but c'mon. I wrote a bit about it on my personal site: Devon Dudeman | A Year Of Disappointment: 2013 In Review.

What do you think? AM I being too cynical? Or was 2013 really a downer all around the world? I realize I might seem like a downer myself, especially since my last thread here: http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...you-think.html but I think it's important to look at the whole picture...even if most of us would rather focus on one part of it.

2013 was one roller coaster of a year. Bad things, good things both going on. I think what 2013 has been is a year of extremes. Extreme weather, extreme financials, extreme politics. Nothing about this year has been so-so.

My summer was extremely awesome - fall/winter severely opposite with my best friend (dog) dying.

It depends on your focus I believe. What you choose to concentrate on and the way you interpret the world will directly affect your outlook. 2013 has been one of the best years on record for me and I'm expecting 2014 to be even better!

Merry Xmas one and all! *slaps*

I know what you mean...glad it's not just me who thinks so. A year of extremes is an accurate way to put it. I'm sorry about your friend =(

As a philosopher, I feel it's extremely important to look at the world around you (plural) and not just focus on what is going on in our own lives. It's as I've said, I think the past year has been pretty shoddy...despite how good your life or my life has been over the past year. The focus here is more about society and current events than our own subjective experience. Ya feel me? Happy Holidays though, and yes, here's hoping to a much better 2014...for us and the rest of humanity.

No I don't feel ya because on some level the world does tend to start and end with us. Setting your own 'subjective' filters may actually be the key to personal life happiness. Forgive me for saying but you do tend to focus on the negative side of life a lot! Start with gratitude perhaps - what are you happy and proud about in your own life? Now look at the wider world, start seeing more of the good news stories out there, and there are plenty of them!

I think many people consider the reality of our global economy rather depressing, so every year just gets worse and worse anyway.

I had a few disappointments throughout the year --didn't everybody? -- but most of all it was a year of learning for me. I learned what I really wanted to do and what I really didn't want to do as far as making money online goes. So all in all it was a good year for this warrior.

Hmmm, l thought that globally not including BS, it was a typical year.

As for me it was the worst year of my life!

I will remember 2013 as being the year from hell.

First off l got a skin infection, (the doctor thought that it was a reaction to something) which was probably a reaction to using harsh washing powders on my hands to get rid of the petrol, (gas) smells associated with filling up to car!

But whatever it was l went through my hands bloating up with water, with water building up under the skin, etc.

Not pretty and l had to grab a tissue or two to type on the keyboard and not get it wet!

It all healed, but living off 12 disprins a day, (with a strong dose of penicillin) for about 6 to 8 weeks, was horrible.

Having a shower, even after taking several disprins, when the sores were healing was painful!

Then going to sleep with my hands wrapped up with band aides and tissues, wasn't fun. Then of course l had itching on top of this!

And then we have now, where l am getting over a stress induced sore gore or teeth issue. Another horrible experience!

So, yeah, l want to forget about 2013 and will be glad when new years eve is over. My new years res, forget about this year!

But l have to admit that l tend to work to hard, trying to get my business to cough up asap. But as l have learned try throttling your profession and you will end up on your back!

Yep, good advise on the surface, but karma will still clobber you eventually!

It all depends on how much!

Or another way of putting it, set a lofty financial goal, and you will most likely be on your knees before hitting the jackpot. That is unfortunately how the universe works!

A small amount is ok, but excessive amounts over to many years, tends to make you seek out other options, or go for the next best thing!

Yep, l can't wait for this %6&# year to be over, and suspect that with what l am doing at present, 2014 will be the year things really take off for me!

It might be frustratingly slow, but l will probably find some small shortcuts along the way!

Hope everyone has a good 2014!

And l could look at the positive side off all this, which is have more compassion for other peoples suffering, and understand my limitations. But 2013 still sucks!

It may be that every year, feels like the worst year ever.

But I think it's just because the bad news is fresh in our minds, so we think that past years must have been better.

You used the word "disappointment" in your title. That's a personal judgement. That means it's disappointing to you...not everyone.

Me? I just find this year to be about average. Every day, we are told it's the end of the world at Midnight....but not really.

        By who?

Every day I get told by the bar landlord at closing time that I'll get my face kicked in if I don't leave, but it's never the end of the world. Just the end of a session. *Hic* . . .

          I was speaking metaphorically.

But we are told by politicians, religious leaders, and "news" shows that we are on the brink of some disaster. I don't mean real physical disasters...but imagined ones. I can see how this could convince, even a bright person, that everything is getting worse, and that we are on the cusp of ruin.

Quite bright being equated to a 100 watt bulb. But don't you know that some of us real "high wattage" types are immune to political, religious, and news guff, even when capernoited.

p.s. Not forgotten the Sherlock Holmes info. I've had a HD problem (that's hard disc not Horny Devil) with my other computer. Should be resolved soon.

That is right! We should leave our disappointments and celebrate our victories as we look forward to the brand new year. It will be a brand new beginning and greater opportunities for all of us.

Philosopher or not, I think we DO tend to see the world around us as a reflection of what's going on in our own lives. At least to some degree.

I see the world around us as pretty much "business as usual". The economy still isn't great, but I see some signs of improvement. Extreme weather? Sure - just like every other year in recent memory SOMEwhere in the world.

On a personal level, 2013 will be the best year for us in a very long time. I have not had a regular job in a few years now. I work for myself (as a consultant in the control systems field) and every year over the past 3 years we do better financially. This year surpasses last year by a wide margin. Next year will be even better.

I stopped letting myself get wrapped up every day by the BS news media and the political BS. I follow - just don't obsess. That one change really got rid of a LOT of negativity.

I give more. That gives me a personal satisfaction.

Just bought a house - first in 20 years.

I basically let go of the Internet Marketing part of my web business, which REALLY helped. That is such a "suck the life out of you" industry. You don't see it until you step back. 2014 promises to be a different year for me on the internet with a major project I am working on. Hopefully profitable...

Outside factors have an impact on our lives, to be sure. But I believe that what WE do, think and believe have a much larger impact. Case in point - I was called nuts to leave my safe job to go out on my own. But I believed in my idea and aside the financial gains I have a much higher level of persoanl and professional satisfaction.

Therefore - the world around me looks pretty darn good

Arrr, so that means that we won't be fried and starving in 90 years time?

      • Or have a mini ice age and freeze to death with widespread crop failure by 2100?

      • Or the universe will implode? And compress and fry us?

      • Or that the whole population with be giving Phar, co, their houses for the latest Cancer cure?

      • Or we will be eating Frankenstein burgers, and seeing the doctor about that?

      • Or selling Martian rabbits on Ebay?

      • Or only the rich can afford electricity, while retirees, freeze or sweat, and make the nearest shopping centre their second home?

you have just taken the fun out of everything!
