Yeah - I could do 500. Given the current state of the planet I really don't think we have 500 years left as a species, but I could do that one. Immortality or a thousand might get just too wierd, but a couple hundred would be good -- specifically for reasons that the guy above was SHOUTING about. Think of what you could learn in that amount of time.

It's an extreme stretch to think that what works on nematode worms will work on us. Researchers also more than doubled the nematode worms' lifespan by reducing it's caloric intake. (several years ago)

Of course, there is the possibility that the worms simply lied about their age. They are known for that kind of consumer fraud. Damn nematode worms.

It would be interesting - but how long could the planet support a population that didn't die off for hundreds of years?

Assuming the life span was on the same time frame as the current life span - you'd be an adult at about 100 and wouldn't retire until you were 400 or so.

You'd have to raise kids for 100 years? Can you imagine working for 300 years at a job that sucked?

I can't imagine working 300 years at a job I loved. Any job would get old in that amount of time. And the new retirement age would be what, 450?

Hard to imagine living with the same person for several hundred years not getting tiresome, too. I imagine the divorce rate would be in the 90+ percentile range for those in the upper age groups.

Our spine compresses as we get older too. In 500 years you might be short enough to walk under the chair you're now sitting in. Half the population would be nicknamed "Shorty."

No. I don't want to survive my children and my grand children. 90 seems like a nice age to die.

      Oh Heck No!

      Nobody tweaks with my genes!

They're family heirlooms for cryin' out loud, passed down from generations and generations and generations, not even mentioning how coveted and valuable they are.

I'm keeping my genes just the way they are, thank you very much!

        Dennis -
I guess society would need interim training so every 40 years or so you could move into a different career.

Marriage would need to come with an expiration date.

YEAH! I found a way to cut costs making chocolate! Go to a different store, that sells sugar for less! I saved 50%! We can CERTAINLY cost the cost of that drive 50%! One question? WHERE are you buying the sugar!?!?!??!? Moth balls make clothing last longer, so they will make your skin more youthful TOO! Just sprinkle moth balls all over your bedroom!

HEY, at least one company even found that increasing the size of the cache, and adding a SOLID STATE RAM drive onto a drive made it run a little SLOWER!!!!!!! ODD, HUH? Do you think that making the RPM 33% slower had something to do with it? Scientists have been saying for a LONG time that there is ANOTHER reason for the ******FIXED LIMIT*******! NOTE, I am choosing my words carefully here. Most people DON'T die of old age! Lucille ball(78) and george C scott(72) and john ritter(55) and elvis presley(42), etc.... did NOT die of old age. GRANTED a slow down and wear and tear might have increased the chances for their deaths, but it wasn't because they had a built in limit. That limit was still far off.

So WHY do we have centenarians? Some of them are just LUCKY! No real mystery! Now why I would like to see is a TWO hundred year old! THEN let's talk!

I may consider this only if that gene modification also keeps you young. But to live longer as an old man where every joint is hurting and you have to wake up 10 times at night to pee - I would pass.

How Karma differs from the 3rd Law of Motion?
Only difference is the reaction would be very strong and not equal i.e. good gets rewarded with lots of good and bad gets rewarded with lots of bad.....so watch your actions carefully...
