I've been outspoken about Windows 8 since I first installed it.

I love it.

Windows 8.1 is the norm for new computers and laptops, the interface does does take a little getting used to, one hassle I found was the start menu? that was solved after several days of frustration! fortunately there is a website that enable windows 8 users to download the windows 7 start menu, worked a breeze...problem solved.

Things to make windows 8/8.1 more like windows 7:

The website laptopmag.com has lots of articles on the subject.
You can download "Classic Shell" to get your windows 7 look back.
There is a $5 app with a free 30 day trial called Start8 that gives you a start menu.
There is also a free program called Pokki which makes windows 8/8.1 more like 7.

I left Windows with Windows 98. I have a PC laptop with Windows 7 on it, and I actually do not mind Windows 7 - it acts more like a Mac OS than did 98, 95, 3.1, etc.

Windows platforms crash more and are subject to viral infection more so than a Mac.

Windows 8? Sucks. I couldn't agree more with the person that said a PC is not a tablet. Nor is it an XBox, needing the same type of interface. I hate the interface.

It's not perfect, but after some time I'm getting to enjoy it. It does have some things that are a bit better, or worse, but overall it's decent.

You can go straight to the desktop and get to work, with details here for anyone that they might be useful for. That was the most annoying thing for me.

I liked the start menu. I would sometimes go through it and check out everything that was on the computer. In website terms 8 has no navigation, just a search box. [Edit: it actually does have a decent nav now on the start screen, since it is grouped into headings, but I just don't use it. The folder views are smaller, neater and more out of the way imo.] I created a start folder at the lower left. Whenever I had to find something I created a short cut and put it in that folder. It has been useful.

Reddit does have a useful 8 sub section, at Windows 8. You get good suggestions for problems there, if anyone has any.

It does start and quit faster than anything I've used yet, including a Mac. That isn't a big thing to me. If I have 20 seconds of extra time in my pig pen (I'm exaggerating) I can put something away or make some progress organizing it. But it does seem to indicate they are doing something efficiently.

Lloyd, not to derail the thread, but could you expand on "copy and paste geek"? My curiosity related to the meaning of the phrase is killing me.

Windows 8

Windows 8 is actually built on the architecture of Windows 7. Unfortunately, they changed a few things such as how the start menu works.

At first, I couldn't stand not having a start button. After a few days, I've found it's actually much faster & saves time by just hitting the Windows key and scrolling with the mouse wheel.

I also went from an Android phone to Windows 8.1 phone and have to say it's much better - it just "works". I don't have time to screw around installing a bunch of apps to make something work.

I have an android tablet as well as a Dell Venue tablet with Windows 8.1 - the Windows tablet is much faster and more responsive.

Windows 8 reminds me of Google trying to be Facebook.

Ugh, I bought a laptop for my daughter for Christmas and it has windows 8. I can't do anything on it! It is too complicated because they are trying to make everything mock an iPad. I don't care if it looks like an app I just want to use the darn thing!

Every new version of Windows is worse than the last.

I've used every version since windows 1.01, and DOS before that. It seems the Microsoft engineers/marketers have no qualms about screwing anyone who upgrades with their changes for the sake of changes. Many times, I've pictured the person responsible being tarred and feathered, and beat with a wet noodle until they get a clue... they would probably die of old age before that happened.

For people who are new to computing, it is kind of a who cares as they will learn how to use the upgrades without a clue how things had been done in the past.

I just finished checking out/aligning some floppy disks, and DOS 5.0 worked very well thank you... as does XP for all of my current needs.

My upgrades come when the software I use on a daily basis get upgraded to the point I have to upgrade for useability... and even then reluctantly.

So for those of you complaining about WinX, why did you upgrade in the first place? That is the real question.

I like windows 7, it's very mac like... MS did a great job copying Mac OSX.

After watching both of these, I was actually able to make a Win8.1 tablet work!

It looks like Win 8 does some neat stuff, but I certainly don't find it wonderfully intuitive.

Windows 8.1 frustrates me, yes, but I love Windows 8 myself.

UPDATE: I'm still finding Windows 8.1 tedious and tiresome, despite making every effort to indulge in and appreciate its features and functionalities. Another annoyance is that it inhibits a number of apps from properly installing on it.

Why? I'd love to find good reasons to start enjoying Windows 8.1 and alleviate my suffering associated with using it.

All the tech-heads I know say that Windows 7, while not the greatest OS of all time (Windows XP was the greatest), is a much better and saner option for PC users than Windows 8.

At least Microsoft knows how to be consistent.

I have no issues whatsoever with 8.1. Just change settings to boot to desktop. Change start button to show all programs and sort by most used. Right clicking on the start button gives you everything else you need. No need for 3rd party apps.

Easy peasy. Plus the built in antivirus is nice. Has stopped several attempted incursions.

So, I personally like it. Came with my new laptop so I guess I better like it. Lol. And I do.

I'm feeling nostalgic for Windows 3.0. I think that was the version on the first computer my family bought. I spent a lot of time using Paint.

Does Windows still come with MS Works?

I switched to a Mac back in 2009 and love it. There's a bit of a learning curve, but once you get used to it, you'll never want to go back to a PC.

For people who don't want to pay for a MAC, you can just
dual-boot your computer with Ubuntu.

It takes a little set-up, but there are plenty of very easy to follow
guides and tutorials... So very much better than Windows, and 100% free.
