What do you do if someone puts a gun to your head?

OK, it's not likely. But...

You may interested in this police officer's advice.

Short version: stay calm, do not try to be a hero, stay calm, look for identifying marks, give them your wallet, stay calm, talk calmly, if you are a hostage be quiet and let the police talk to them, and never let them drive you to a remote location.

Some good advice. I've never had a gun put directly to my head, but I have had one pointed at my head from about ten feet or so while being threatened with being shot.

Nothing I could do. Out in the middle of an almost empty parking lot. Nothing to jump behind. Nowhere to run. My hands were in my pockets and I kept them there, stayed calm, turned and slowly walked away without a word. Expected the shot, but it never came. Longest 30 foot walk I've ever taken.

If they want something, toss it on the ground and run the other way.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

I've had a gun to my head before and I've also been shot before.
When the person held a gun to my head, I stayed calm.
I also swiftly reacted with extreme violence.
I learned that no matter how hard you try, you cannot shove a .45 semi down a persons throat

That's not necessarily the best advice in all situations. You have to use your judgement. There was a video recently -I think it was posted in this forum- of a man on a Seattle bus pushing the gun out of the way when an armed mugger approached him. Then the other passengers restrained the attacker. Of course, that could have turned out badly. But if more people would react that way, it would discourage that kind of crime.

I'm not sure telling people to passively obey attackers is really so great from a societal point of view. On the other hand, if someone gets the jump on you and there's no realistic way for you to fight back or disarm them, it only makes sense to cooperate. I think if you are going to fight back, it's best to do it instantly.

I always figured if someone points a gun at you they intend to use it. Each circumstance is different and there really isn't one way to handle them. When I had the gun pointed at my head the guy was right next to me and the muzzle pressed to my temple. I reacted immediately and it wasn't a thought out response, just reflexes.
That was back in my younger days when being in dangerous situations happened a lot. If the same thing happened to me today, I can't say if I would react the same way or not. Of course I tend to avoid dangerous situations now more then gravitate towards them
