OMGoodness!

Giant ice balls!

I'm looking at the color of those things and wondering if the water in that lake is really that dirty now.

I just thought they were that color from rolling around in the sand there at the shore.

I know I'm dirty like that after a day of rolling around in the sand at the dunes, haha!

That's true. I just figured the beach would be too frozen solid in that stuff for any to stick to the balls. The water near the shore was always a little sandy, though.

          Shane,

Why don't you tell us about the record heat Australia is having for the second straight year? You know, 120F+ temps that have killed all sorts of wildlife, including 50,000 bats?

Why do you keep leaving that out of your comments, even though you live in Australia? Looks like some serious cherry-picking to me.

Also, how's Brazil's weather doing? That's right, it's having record temps too.

That's two countries about the same size as the US having record breaking heat, but for some reason you only note the EXTREME cold in the US. Maybe the southern hemisphere is part of the planet too? Not to mention that 70% of the eaerth's surface is water.

Brazil is also sizzling, with the heat index reaching 49 degrees Celsius (120 F). Zookeepers in Rio de Janeiro were giving animals ice pops to beat the heat.

Since Dec. 27, records have been set at 34 locations across Australia--some by large margins--where temperature data has been collected for at least 40 years mostly in Queensland and New South Wales states. In the mining town of Narrabi in New South Wales, the new record of 47.8 degrees Celsius (118 F) exceeded the previous record by 3.6 degrees Celsius (6.5 F). The extreme temperatures come on the heels of Australia's hottest year on record, beating the previous record year of 2005, with mean temperatures 1.2 degrees Celsius (2.2 F) above the 1961-90 average
At least 50,000 bats had been killed by the heat in the state's southeast, said Louise Saunders, president of the Queensland animal welfare group Bat Conservation and Rescue.
Heat-stressed bats--including the Black Flying Foxes, Little Red Flying Foxes and the endangered Gray-Headed Flying Foxes--cling to trees and urinate on themselves in a bid to reduce their body temperatures, she said. "As they succumb, they just fall in heaps at the base of trees," Saunders said. "You can have 250 or more--it's like dripping chocolate--all dying at the base of trees."

Terra back in the 90's I use to go to the Salmon River off Lake Ontario Steelhead fishing. One day we went to the public beach on the lake. There where slabs of ice three feet thick and the size of a bus piled up all over the place.

As for this cold snap being extreme, please. I've lived in the Northeast for the better part of 60 years. I've seen winters that where colder and winters that where warmer. We haven't had any record lows or highs yet this winter.
Summers have actually been a little cooler then normal though.
Personally I'm getting tired of these climate change people acting like chicken little.
Yes mankind is contributing to the climate, but instead of trying to prove you're right and trying to scare everyone do something about it.
Plant some trees, educate others about the importance of trees. Cut down on your CO2 emissions and educate others to do the same. At least then you will be doing something instead of just flappin your jaws.

If you're tired of it, don't comment about it. Simple.

I doubt there's many people on this forum that have a lower carbon footprint that I do, or who is trying to educate people about how to change it more than I, including you.

In 2011 I spent about $50 on gasoline for the enter year. Probably about $85 for 2012, it was higher because I took a road trip to visit my brother to make solar videos. Ironic, huh?

BTW, there's only one person on this thread that made claims about global warming. I didn't make any claims about climate change, I simply asked Shane a legit question about his omitting the weather where he lives and pointed out opposing statistics. I left any conclusions up to yourselves.

However, any intellectually honest person should be concerned with why a person living in a place that's setting heat records makes snide comments about another place that's having cold temps as if it proves his political point of view.

The news stations said that, so they might be talking about frozen solid, not frozen on the top?

They did say 1892, so there must be a substantial difference!

Shane when it froze solid it was because of an ice jam up river.
The reason why it freezes now is because we divert water into a hydro-electric plant.
It only happens on the U.S. side. There is an island above the falls.
On our side of the island is where we divert the water, which is why our side freezes and the Canadian side doesn't.

              I agree with you Thom.

For instance, in all of this cold and snow for days, we only broke one record and it was by 3 measly degrees.

I'd really like to ask whomever started this "we're dooming ourselves crap" what the people did fifty or one hundred years ago to cause this same weather and temperatures and what was done to fix it back then until now. And why not just use those same techniques today to save us for another 50 to 100 years?

I'm not making light of us destroying so much natural habitat at all and agree we need to get a handle on it and make some restorations and adjustments. We should respect the earth and care for it.

I'm just attempting to show how retarded the whole climate change and extreme weather thing is when you look at the facts, patterns and records. Yes there are some worrying aspects in other areas concerning the earth, but keep the fear mongering agendas out of all of it.

Well put Terra, but unfortunately some will cling to the doomsday version regardless of what anyone says, or how many pieces of the puzzle we show to contradict the worst case scenario!

Maybe we should ask, why do some people cling to the worst case scenario or refuse to acknowledge valid pieces of evidence?

Fear seems to be the main reason!

Hmmm, it was still partially operational back then in 1892 first time it froze.

So it still indicates, extreme or unusual cold, or a possible mini ice age period.

The main indication of the 1864 -1896 mini ice age, was the Thames river in England freezing up!

Rivers in America have certainly been doing that recently, but as you have indicated Niagara needs more research, before using it as a sure sign of a mini ice age!

Probably because l live in Victoria, and our summer has been a bit of a phizzer so, far! A handful of hot days, but mainly something inbetween!

And our hottest day a few years ago, which was 47.3, (something like that) was seriously hot!

But Victoria did get to 48. something, l am a bit iffy on the date, late 1800's or 1950's?

Last time Niagra Falls froze was 1892, or at the end of the last mini ice age, (the Thames river in England froze solid that time).

Pretty good indication to me that the mini ice age idea, is a real possibility!

            • Also the fact that we can discuss heat trapped in oceans, blah, blah, but the fact still remains that the poles are gaining ice, when they shouldn't be.

            • And for the last 15 years, world temp, haven't moved much.

            • And things are freezing in America that haven't for a good 100 years!

Cherry picking, no, l will just go with the side that makes more sense!
