  • I'm sorry. This should not be funny. But it is. It really is.

    But it's still funny.

    • Snopes? Paul Myers. You KNOW better, sir.

In this case they might actually be right, though. However - I have tried to get into the wrong car before so it's not like it's outrageously wrong even if just a story.
  • Sal,Know better than... what?

Show me any incidence where they say it's false and it's not. I haven't found one in the decade plus that I've been checking things against their database. They may be wrong on something, but I haven't seen it yet.

I have, however, saved some of my friends a lot of trouble by referencing Snopes when they send me outrageous stories. Like asking if they're likely to (for example) end up in a bathtub full of ice with both kidneys gone...

    • I think, on a lot of forums, people often go to Snopes to get the story and post it. I don't for a minute think Joseph didn't did that and besides, from the point of view of someone drinking their first coffee of the morning, it was quite amusing to imagine, true or not.

Mind you, this is true. You've got to admit, this Grandma is as hard as nails.

    • They are wrong fairly frequently if you get into the right areas - and according to common knowledge stuff they are usually right, but they don't do a lot of deep search. They're mostly googlers themselves. So if all you want is from word around the web, they hit it. Serious stuff, though, they do save time sometimes in beginning research. Once you get past the light stuff, they no longer know what to do with it.

It's just I cringe when people use them as a reference, because they aren't professional researchers. They're just a husband and wife team who look stuff up a little bit. Some people see them referenced and think they are the be all and end all in authority after seeing them quoted, so I avoid using them as reference. Most actual researchers I know won't reference them either so I was surprised seeing you reference them.

Then again - I share stuff shared with me on facebook without looking it up a lot, too, if I think anyone's interested in seeing the article, so ..............just sayin'

    • I'm pretty sure criminals would avoid any neighborhood where even elderly women won't shy away from a confrontation, lol.

      Yeah, that was my mother.
  • There was an armed robbery attempt in a town about 30 miles from here that didn't go well for the robbers. The 96-year-old store owner refused to open the register and instead said he could have all the tootsie rolls he wanted. She also refused to go to the back room when ordered to do so. The would-be robber ended up leaving empty-handed. The two of them, one inside and one outside, were eventually caught.

  • Just to clear up some confusion, I didn't research the story. Why should I have? I grabbed it from my Facebook feed.

My point was that sometimes Thunderbird would reply to a thread with an answer that should have been to another thread, for whatever reason, maybe he's tired or spilled coffee on himself and when I read the story I thought of him.

Doesn't really matter if it's true or not, does it.

I found this and thought you might enjoy it. Get Out Of The Car! This is a true account recorded in the Police Log of Sarasota, Florida: An elderly Florida lady did her shopping and, upon returning to her car, found four males in the act of leaving with her vehicle. She dropped her shopping bags and drew her handgun, proceeding to scream at the top of her lungs, "I have a gun, and I know how to use it! GET OUT OF THE CAR!"
