    Alem,

You're not my type but the avatar looks good for branding.

I'll be honest. For me, the avatar does not inspire confidence. You look like you're about to rent me a paddle boat.

Nonsense! There are no boats in sight. I suppose he could get dressed up in a formal business suit and do the usual 'smile to the world' job.

Riffle tends to be the comedy hour guy here on Off Topic. Just to inform.

It looks to me as though there's a lake in the background, but that's not the point.

The OP plans to brand himself around the image and I don't see it as a good choice. My initial impression is of someone on vacation (or about to rent me a paddle boat while I'm on vacation). It doesn't inspire me to give him cash.

Take your avatar, for example. The composition gives a sense of action and confidence. Ken Leatherman's avatar gives a sense of caring and compassion. Both are good examples of brandable images.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

You look fine for a casual picture, but I have to agree with Dan's comment.

If you're looking to brand yourself, you need to take a more professional approach to your photograph.

Um......maybe he's trying to brand himself as a outdoors/sportsman of some sort. In which case, a suit isn't gonna cut it at all. This photo is earthy and real, so depending upon what you are looking to brand yourself as......it might work.

Sure, it depends on his angle. But let's say he's trying to present himself as an outdoorsman. Does that shot really say "outdoorsman" or does it just say "some guy out for a stroll?"

For me, the image doesn't project any image of confidence from which I'd be implored to give him my money.

That's all I'm getting at, OP. I'm not trying to bash you in any fashion. Just trying to give an honest answer.

You don't need to be in a suit. You just want the image to present what you want it to present. There are two good examples in this thread alone. (Mine is not one.)

Riffle; You have a good marketing mind. I'm not joking.

        Alam;
My thought is that you are hiding behind your sunglasses and wearing a hat to hide your hair. I'm not kidding. The photo at least needs to show your face, and should be more of a closeup.

An avatar, at it's best, tells a story. Like Ken Leatherman and Dennis Gaskill.
The outdoorsy look would be good too, but the photo doesn't look outdoorsy, just like you were in the Witness Protection program.

If you want "Laid back guy", be laying in a hammock, with a drink in your hand, on your cell phone. That would say "Hey, I'm relaxing, and taking care of business".

Of course, this is coming from a guy who's Avatar is a bald head that scares children. But my marketing photos are more professional.

Okay - point taken. That's why I had the hat and pocketed shirt on in my pic - the string of pearls reminded people I was female under the "field gear". LMAO. That pic was so out of date that I had to put up a pic of my new ebook until I can decided on what to do for a new pic. So, yeah - I get what you are saying. I think for this forum, though - at least it depicts him as approachable, and I think he's got an honest, down-home look about him.

Well come on, Sal. We want to see a new pic. I liked the old one, but the ebook cover looks too much like Riffle's avatar. After your post in the fake see-thru dress thread, where you commented about climbing to tone your derriere, maybe...

I don't climb to tone my derriere. I climb to get to the rocks. Keeping tone just kinda happens. Ricky is on my avatar for now. I'll get a new avatar up this summer. Haven't even decided which point I want to make with it yet. Right now the only point I could make with a new one is how bad ragged out I get by the end of winter.

Oh, Dennis...the story your photo tells is obvious.

You are a 46 year old man of Croation decent. You enjoy hiking and boating. You injured your knee last year, but didn't tell your wife. Your wife cuts your hair, but not with a razor...with shears.

Your dog was implicated in a murder, six months ago. But the jury is still out. A plea bargain is in the works. Your dog can't sleep at night, and grinds her teeth.

Your relationship with your dog is strained, after "Algernon" (Your dog's real birth name) caught you petting a German Shepard.

Your photo has appeared in 4 magazines, recently in Bathhouse Confessions.

This morning you had oatmeal for breakfast. You wear a false beard, to cover a scar you received while playing Twister, while everyone wore ice skates.

            Elementary, my dear Dennis.

I watched Sherlock on TV.

Alam, maybe you could tell us what you are really going for here?

If it is "approachable everyman," I'd say this isn't bad, though Claude has a great point about the sunglasses being counterproductive.

If it is "trustworthy advisor," particularly with financial concerns, I'd say you are missing the mark completely.

If it is "worldly and experienced," then you are not doing a good enough job of showing us any reason to believe that about you.

    Context matters.

      Hi Alam,

Please don't take this the wrong way but I'm afraid I'm with Riffle, the Claudster and others.

I'm afraid I'm not filled with confidence of you teaching IM skills etc. (I watched the video on your site). That is just what your avatar picture does, and does for me, who you may not even want as a customer anyway.

The video is better as I can hear you and see your eyes. You come across very genuine there, though I think I'd take the wrapping off the office chair.

My image, for example, brands me as one of the forums sub human posters, so the fact that you'd normally see me and think "What a twat!" is actually the branding effect I've been trying so hard to cultivate.

Good luck though, I don't think you look awful either, it just doesn't do it for me.

Nothing is wrong with sunglasses unless you want to use your face as a marketing tool. Concealing part of your face (or head) makes the casual observer think that you're untrustworthy. I know there have been studies about this, but I'm not sure if they should be linked to here.

People instinctively read your face to see if you look happy and relaxed.

I saw Dennis's picture on a 4 year old thread. Same one. His beard is now twice the length and he no longer looks like Billy Mays. But then neither does Billy Mays. His dog dyed his fur black and joined the Peace Core.

Claude had a stunt double do his picture but he had more hair in the middle (Obviously a fake Claude) but refused to shave it off.

Dan Riffle is actually a white matchstick man!

I refuse as yet to reveal myself because no camera shot makes me look good these days. That and mirrors.

The new Avatar: Lose the sunglasses, lets see the whites of your eyes, lose the hat, lets see a full face, nothing to hide, you are anonymous like that. Is the shirt showing the amount of dollars you can earn in a day? :-), would be better with an open necked plain or Hawaiian shirt. A closer shot too.
