Who Wins The Super Bowl and Why?

OK, someone has to answer the question the way the OP hoped for, so I'll start.

The Broncos, unless Manning gets knocked out of the game. Why? Because he's a great quarterback, has a lot more experience than Wilson, and is having a great year.

Seattle may have the better defense, but if they can't put a lot of pressure on Manning his preparation and experience won't be denied. Plus, Denver's run defense is good enough to put the pressure on Wilson to perform. He won't buckle, but he could toss up some INTs. And lastly, Seattle's secondary is somewhat unproven.

Let preface by saying I'm not a football fan (I'm the only non-football fan in Mississippi, I think:p).

I don't know much about the game but seems to me the weather could be a big factor. The guys at work were arguing the Superbowl and kept talking about Broncos being a "running team".

If the weather is not just cold but is snow, sleet, etc - wouldn't that hurt a "running" team? When I asked that, the guys say "no" but I'm not convinced.

I don't know much about football - but that theory is as good as half the ones I've heard people arguing about this week

Well, you are right in that the weather will be a factor, but it can affect both the running game and passing game. Not only is it harder to run in snow it's hard to throw and catch the ball in snow/sleet and many say that the better running team will have the advantage.

I don't know about those guys you work with because Denver is a passing team more than a running team by about a 3 to 1 margin. Seattle actually has a better running game.

That is why I gave the answer I did.
I can't tell you who is playing team wise of who is on any of the teams.
The only sports I have ever watched have been martial arts tournaments.

These teams are pretty evenly matched and if they played 10 times, they'd probably come close to splitting.

As a life-long Bronco fan and it's only a single game, I'm picking the Broncos. My pick is the most biased pick on this thread. LOL

We've actually had a solid run D all season and the pass D has played very well the past 4-5 games. Coincidently, Champ Bailey returned healthy 5 weeks ago.

But the biggest reason to pick the Broncos is Peyton Manning. Plus, how do you root against a guy with the nickname "Pot Roast"?

For a Packer, Gilbert Brown would be a good comparison. A Bronco LB once said about Pot Roast that when he goes down in a 4 point stance, one bun is in the 1 gap and the other bun is in the 2 gap.

Ah, the "Gravedigger" ...Gilbert was a fan favorite, one of my favorites too. I was just comparing nicknames. Rumor has it Pot Roast and Lunch Bucket use to hang out with "Refrigerator" Perry.

My opinion of the guys at work is - they love to talk about football whether it makes sense or not.

I see the game playing out like this...

Seattle opening drive falls short...too many nervous jitters leading to offensive mistakes

Denver moves the ball decently but has to settle for a long 54 yard field goal.

Denver 3

On Denver's next offensive possession Seattle's pass rush causes Manning to fumble, they return it for a defensive TD

Seattle 7
Denver 3

Denver stalls, and Seattle, still finding it hard to run, gets a couple of decent pass plays, setting up a 35 yard TD pass to Percy Harvin.

Seattle 14
Denver 3

Denver fights harder in the trenches, moving again fairly well, dink and dunk passing down to the 6 but are stopped short and have to settle for a 23 yarder.

Denver's defense tightens up, looking like it has in the post season, finally forcing Seattle to punt. Denver takes a methodical drive down the field yet again...and yet again is stymied by Seattle's defense, kicking a 39 yard field goal.

Drive stopped, 36 yard attempt is good.

Denver, having deferred the opening coin toss, takes the first drive of the 2nd half for a 28 yards field goal, but eating 8 minutes off the clock in the process.

Seattle, two possessions later puts it in the hands of Lynch, who has found his beast mode. He carries them down and rumbles into the endzone from 4 yards out.

We go into the final quarter, Denver trailing, Manning takes the field, his first three passes demonstrate that he has taken his focus to a higher level. He attacks Sherman, vying to get the ball to his biggest target in D Thomas, he is succeeding, Denver is throwing deep, opening it up. Pretty quick Manning finds Welker over the middle. Touchdown.

Seattle, not content to roll over, is marching right down the field, now deep into Denver territory...Wilson throws...Diving interception by Champ Bailey! Bailey, who has been playing inspired football all day, perhaps playing his last game, and done well against the run all day comes up big with the pick. Denver takes over at the 6...under the direction of Manning who is making crisp decisions, and throwing lazer strikes to his targets.....takes the orange jerseys all the way to the other end. D Thomas for a leaping grab in the back of the endzone. Touchdown.

Seattle now racing the clock with 5:44 remaining, overcomes a couple of 4th down conversions stemming from a some great athletic play by Wilson. Seattle now finds themselves with a realistic shot to score, and a 2 point conversion would send us into overtime. 4th down again, goal to go....Pass to Tate, its tipped out of bounds by Cromartie.

Denver takes over...not in the clear yet...they're going need a couple of first downs to burn the clock and get to the finish line. Seattle defense stuffs Denver, 3rd and long...Great play by decker to stay in bounds at the first down marker....Seattle holds them again...now 3rd and 4 Denver looks like they're going to screen, which they've had pretty good success with all game....no Manning hands it to Montee...he's finds the hole...stiff arms the linebacker....he bounces outside...he has room to run!...not fast enough to outrun several Seattle defenders...but a 50 yard gain!....Denver now well into Seattle territory, chooses to kneel on the ball. Three plays later Peyton Manning takes the final knee, lifts his fists into the air, ala John Elway esq...The Broncos have won the Superbowl!....the Broncos have won the Superbowl!

Bronco's. Colorado native bias aside. They seem to do well
at developing the strategies needed to beat the opponent.

Example: how they rendered Kansas City's defense ineffective
by having Peyton getting rid of the ball stupid fast...

IMHO...

Seattle must score more than 24 points if they are to win this game because as good as their defense is, its still going to be hard to hold the most prolific offense in NFL history to under 24 points- unless...

... they put "SB#42-NY Giants on Tom Brady" type of pressure on Manning.

This game is a match up of old school offense verses new school offense with the Broncos sporting the newer pass first run second type of offense that has taken over the league.

I believe the Broncos will try to force a young Russel Wilson to beat them through the air as they will play run unless its an obvious pass situation - which for Seattle is 3rd and long- more than 6 yards.

If Wilson proves he can hurt the Broncs through the air early, then Denver will back off playing strictly run and it will become a serious cat and mouse game between coordinators as to when the Seahawks will run or throw.

If the Broncos jump out early to a two TD lead the Seahawks could be in big trouble but as long as they don't panic they'll have plenty of time to get back in the game.

The key for Seattle is to keep the game close.

Note: When the top offense has met the top defense in past Super Bowls the top defense has won almost every time, but we'll have to see what happens this time.

That's a pretty good analysis, TL. I picked Denver unless Manning gets knocked out of the game early, so we both think pressuring him is the key.

Even with all the stuff said about the Seattle D, Sherman is good but he's only one guy and can only do so much. I see at most one interception from Manning but it won't amount to much.

I see the game close in score up until the 4th quarter where Seattle D misses a few and Broncos go up by more than 7 points.

If anything it will be a struggle for Wilson to keep up with Manning scoring on nearly every possession. For the Broncos it will be just another game

**We're talking about one of the best offenses in NFL history here. I don't think that can be accurately compared against the best defense for this season.

With scores so wildly different in the different predictions, as long as Denver wins they can show how "uncannily" accurate Madden 25 was at predicting the outcome.

Denver- If...
1. Jack DelRio stacks the box, and forces Wilson to make plays with his arm.
2. Moreno and Ball get positive gains
3. Peyton gets time in the pocket to go through his progressions.

Seattle- If...
1. Keep the game close till 4th, and Lynch wears defense down.
2. Wilson has multiple 10yd + Completions
3. Pressure on Peyton, flush him out of the pocket, give him "Happy Feet".

That being said, I am pulling for Manning.
Mainly to stop all the "Legacy" Crap.

The problem with the Superbowl is allegedly they are the 2 best teams competing in the top game so they should be evenly matched. The problem is almost every year one of the teams gets crush, totally destroyed and the best part of the game is the commercials. I Have no guess who is going to get crushed this year, but one will.

I think the refs are the key to the game. Do they call holding or let the O lines give the QBs more time? Do they call defensive holding, especially on Seattle's DBs who are very physical, or are they afraid to make a call because it's the "Big Game"?

I really hope the refs let them play. They did in the AFC championship but not nearly as much in the NFC. In the past the refs have gotten out of the way and let the big boys play real football in big games. But I have to wonder how it's gonna go today and in the future. There has been a very deliberate effort this year to eliminate much of the rough stuff. The NFL is looking at a bunch of law suits from retired players for head injuries and other stuff.

With their zealous efforts to comply the refs have made some outrageously bad calls this season. They've gone way beyond what's reasonable and are turning pro football into a sissy game. Okay, that's not exactly true but if they keep moving in this direction football isn't going to be much fun to watch. There's talk that during the off season they'll be looking at making certain calls by refs reviewable. I don't know if that will fix things because it will be the refs themselves deciding whether their mistakes were actually mistakes.

I don't have any preference but I'm picking the Seahawks today. I really like Manning and would love to see him get another ring. But I also have to admire what Seattle did this year. One day Russel Wilson will be where Brady and Manning are now. Looking at the HOF with a brilliant career behind him. I'm expecting to see Lynch have a big game. I know the Broncos shut down LeGarrette Blount in the conference title game but Lynch is way better than Blount. I love how it takes three, four guys to bring him down. I'm thinking it's close with the winning play coming from a miraculous turnover in the last two minutes.

I agree with Mike Ditka. If it's a rule then you call it. Don't intentionally look for fouls, but if you see an obvious one, call it. Don't change how you made calls all season just because it's the Superbowl.

I tend to agree but there are some pesky variables here. If they wanted the refs could find someone holding on just about every play. So how do these guys determine who gets called? If a hold allows one team to get yardage should it be called? Sure. But what about an inconsequential hold far away from the ball. Technically it should be called too but sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't.

This is where it gets sticky. I understand it's part of the game and ultimately it's up to the zebras and that we have to draw the line somewhere, etc. Even so, I don't think there's a single fan who hasn't felt his or her team got screwed this season (this season especially) wondering why their guys got penalized on a questionable call when other far more obvious stuff was overlooked.

Regarding penalties, I want the flags thrown as soon as the infraction occurs and I want the TV people to let us know asap.

I'm sick of the refs all too often throwing the flag almost after the play is over as if they were waiting for the outcome of the play to decide if they should throw the flag or not.

I'm praying to the football gods that this game won't be decided by a blown call but since in this season (IMHO) the NFL took a turn into the realm of the WWF and a Don King production I fear the worst.

I am very confident that Seattle will win the Superbowl. Everything points to a Seattle win if you go by past history and the weather conditions will suit them. Denver's record in Superbowl finals isn't great.

Tomorrows newspaper sports headlines will be all about Seattle's victory.

Wow, just wow. I was just on NFL.com and the predictions there were surprising. 9 of 12 people predict the Seahawks to win.

So far, they appear to be right.

Let's see if the Broncos can pull it together in the second half.

I must say I didn't appreciate how Manning started running the ball far more during the end when, in the spirit of good sportsmanship, he should be throwing the darn thing. That was very frustrating to watch since it was evident he had given up.

In that situation you need to show you still have something in you since your fans are obviously disappointed. I don't care what others say to justify Manning here, he is no longer an elite QB in my mind.

Throw in the towel before the game end? No, sorry. When you're paid millions to do your job and you're considered an elite player in your line of work you keep trudging even when the odds are stacked against you.

Even if the final pass had been a hail mary pass that was intercepted it would still have been a better end to the crap that Broncos fans frustratingly had to watch tonight.

On another note Seattle played beautifully. Nothing whatsoever I can say against them. The better team won.

My guess is that the Broncos would play them much better if the two teams played again in a few weeks. Earlier this year Seattle kicked the 49ers @ss big time. However, later in the year the 49ers beat them and then came just a few inches from beating them in the conference finals. Seattle is playing at a high level and if you aren't ready for them they will take you apart.

With the exception of the errant snap that resulted in a safety, the Broncos were forced into making bad plays all game long. Seattle's defense rarely let Peyton get comfortable in the pocket. He completed most of his passes on slants and crossing routes. He simply didn't have much time to drop back and go through his progressions. The Seattle defense was constantly in his face.

That being said, I also have great respect for Peyton Manning and wish we'd played someone else other than Denver. I don't think his legacy is damaged at all by the loss. Nor do I think the Broncos regret their decision to bring him in. Of all people, John Elway has to be very understanding and sympathetic. He lost 4 Super Bowls before winning his last 2.

The worst thing about it has to be that Peyton has been to three Super Bowls and come away with one win while his younger brother, Eli, is 2-0. That has to sting, even though Peyton is clearly a better QB.

The bad news for Denver is that as good as they'll be next year, the NFC will still be better. Seattle will be loaded again. San Francisco will be formidable as well. Arizona is quietly on the rise, as is Philadelphia. Carolina and New Orleans will be good again and Atlanta and Green Bay should return to form after major injuries this season.

I hate to say it, but I don't think Peyton will get a second Super Bowl ring. His time is running out and the NFC is just too good. Still, he'll always be one of the greatest to ever play the game and is a lock for the Hall of Fame.

Not to make excuses for this Superbowl, just note that we lost 5 defensive starters that should be back next season, including Von Miller, who many believe is one of the top 3-4 defensive players in the league. We also lost all-pro OT Ryan Clady. Other than Peyton, Miller and Clady are our two best players.

I'm looking forward to next season and hope we'll be heathier...

Excuse me.

That Seattle defense was/is really something.

They had just enough of a timely pass rush to disrupt the Bronco offense along with really sticky coverage in the secondary with hardly any yards after the catch - especially on those short crossing patterns the Broncs love.

But I didn't expect what happened.

- Once again when the top offense faces the top defense in the SB the defense has won almost every time.

- I think I heard its now 5 out of 6 times with the exception being Montana against the Broncos back in the 1980s.

- Marshawn Lynch was shut down but it didn't matter.

- Russel Wilson made some timely 3rd down completions and no turnovers to help the cause.

- The Bronco turnovers and that kickoff return by Harvin sealed the deal.

BTW...

- Mark Cuban played the twitterverse by claiming he won a bet in vegas predicting that opening play safety and winning 20 million. He later tweeted that he was just kidding.

Green Bay was devastated by injuries this year. One of the worst years I've ever seen in that regard. They should be back next year.

I'm not a big baseball fan, but I'll have spring training going on all around me soon. The Diamondbacks spring training stadium is only about 1 1/2 away and the San Francisco Giants less than 5 miles. Actually, the Cubs are only about 5-6 miles away, too, and they have a brand new stadium. My wife and I just drove past it a couple weeks ago.

You see players and coaches all over the place during spring training. I've seen Matt Williams, Louis Gonzales, Joe Garagiloa Jr., etc. Not nearly as big of a deal as seeing an NFL player would be, but it's still pretty cool. Actually, Joe Garagiloa Jr. sat right behind my son and I while we were out for breakfast one morning. Yawn...lol.

I played organized baseball up till the age of 16 (JD, junior development) but I still have a hard time watching it for more than a couple of innings at a time. I do watch a lot of the world series every year though and enjoy the little league world series.

But since my team, the O's are decent again perhaps I'll watch more often.

I seldom sit and just watch. I usually have it on the background while I do other things. When the announcers get excited, I look up; or I'll watch at critical moments, like bases loaded. Congrats to Seattle. Really, really impressed with what they have done up there. It's more than the on-field results. They've worked hard to make sure the coaches and management are aligned and committed to one system, something many teams can't seem to get right.
