There is no amount of alcohol or "smoke" that could make a game of gridiron worth watching.

At least Bruno Mars played music. To say nothing of his incredible impersonation of James Brown.
The Chili Peppers just plain sucked!

I also liked the James Brown dance steps, as well as Bruno's bass player.

But I didn't care for the show itself, and if there's one thing that really bugs me, it's those fake "fans" around the stage that all the half time shows have.

I was surprised by Bruno Mars. Really solid stuff. He is very surprising. And seems to have Charisma, at least way more than I thought he had ! He may not be Adam Levine but he does let his material speak for itself.

Sorry, but as a musician (jazz drummer) since I was 3 years old, the RHCP are a really classy bunch.

People who cannot recognize the Chile Pepper's musicality do not really understand the nuances of being great performers and most important (to me at least) great musicians.

Flea is a technically great bass player. Fusion, Funk, and Jazz you name it he can do it. Maybe not Jaco Pastorius (Weather Report Jazz/Fusion band). But damn good.

Lead guitarist John Frusciante is a stellar lead guitarist influenced by the likes of Hendrix and guitar aficionados like Steve Vai. Mixed in with his own style and originality.

And Chad Smith is no Buddy Rich or Dennis Chambers but he has a set of chops that are 99% better than any of the rock drummers of today/history ( yes, that includes my hero John Bonham of Led Zep). Actually he is a Funk drummer by nature but can also play impressive jazz and latin as well.

These guys are really , really skillful musicians who incorporate an incredible amount of feel and skill into their playing. I've studied all three and they are the real deal and take great pride in their craftsmanship !.

I hear a lot of haters of RHCP. Which I realize they may not be their taste of music.

Thats cool but at least give them a shout out to their musical talents, because that they have

        Discrat,

The Broncos usually play well, too, but I don't think either did so tonight.

Just my opinion. They're normally okay, but I didn't find anything about their performance this time around to be worth watching. If it had been my first experience of them, I'd have made it my last.

That said, they probably picked up a few fans this evening.

Yeah I hear you Paul. I guess I get biased as a musician and seeing the popular crap today where the performers are only pretenders and are far from having any set skills as musicians.

I mean come on putting a mic. in front of a performers mouth and talking about hoes and gang banging does not make one a legitimate singer or musician.

Maybe it is a form of expression and art but personally I could do without it.

That being said Justin Beiber ( not a rapper of course but I lump him in the same league as far as his contribution to music) can actually play half decent drums. Not great but at least better than I expected after watching him on Youtube.

          So go figure

            Robert,

Rap is a whole different thing. Granted, the 'gangsta' stuff can be pretty unnerving for people with a more traditional background, but that doesn't make it any less valid. And there's a lot more to the genre than just that.

Let's be real. I grew up in a white, blue collar environment, with farmers and coal miners and engineers in my family. I know what 'the company store' really means, and I've seen black lung and what it does to a man. I've seen things you'll probably never see if you're not from that sort of background. You wouldn't understand them if you did.

I can feel those things in my bones.

That said, it is no more possible for me to fully grok the urban black experience than it would be to honestly claim I know how it feels to be pregnant.

There are things you cannot truly understand unless you've lived them, or could. Art provides a window into those things, a way to grasp the edges, so to speak. To make them less foreign. The really good artists make you feel like you might even be standing in the doorway. You may never be able to walk through, but you can at least lose the fear and uncertainty that goes with not knowing at all.

That's a powerful thing, and not to be dismissed lightly.

Rap is one such window. Guys like Jay-Z are geniuses at communicating their gestalt, and their work has more value to modern people than any of the classics.

The man is flat out freaking brilliant.

The same could be said of works like the biographical tales of John Lame Deer, or the songs of Larry Long, or the music of Carlos Nakai or Mary Youngblood, in understanding the experience of native Americans. You'll never "be" there, but it makes it more accessible and more relateable.

            Sometimes, that can be enough.

Sorry. I got carried away, way off the topic.

I'm not a Bruno Mars fan, but I can see why others like him. The Chili Peppers were awful, IMO. Whether you liked it or not, of course, depends on what kind of music you like. It's subjective.

That was one of the best halftime shows they have ever had.
Perhaps, some just don't like that type of music.
To have the Bruno Mars Band be able to hang with the tight grooved Peppers during "Give it Away Now," was a powerhouse performance that the crowd I was with was raving about.
Seriously, the entire crowd was cheering and clapping where I was at.

    We're all entitled.

    - Queen Latifa's version on American The Beautiful was interesting and nice.

    - The opera lady Renée Fleming rendition of the national anthem was beautiful.

    - Bruno Mars was OK in my book - helped a lot by the visuals. He has one song of which I'm vaguely familiar with - the last song he sang. I thought the Red Hots played with a lot of energy.

I wonder who will be picked for the next Super Bowl halftime show?

I think the halftime show was one of, if not the best in over a decade. Sorry, the Stones didn't do it for me. Janet Jackson and Timberlake, eh. Prince was decent in his own indecent way. I give Paul McCartney props because, well, he's a freakin' music icon...

I didn't know what to expect from Bruno Mars and was really pleased. I sat there thinking, wow, a talented act. They harmonize well, they've got some moves, their music's reminiscent of some of the stuff I grew up with (Motown) while having a certain freshness of current times. I really liked 'em. I'll be checking out some of their tunes this week and will probably buy a few.

As for the Chili Peppers. Dem's my homies from the '80s. These guys are in their 50s now and still look good, still move good, still have the swag they had in the old days. And their music still gets to me. And surprisingly, they meshed well with Bruno Mars. Bravo all around.

These girls were 13 and 14 years old when they recorded this very cool cover of Grenade

I thought Springsteen in 2009 was probably the best, but then I'm a diehard Boss fan.

The Superbowl halftime show can't really be compared to a live concert as the artists are generally singing against a pre-recorded instrumental backing, so it's more a case of who can jump around the stage most entertainingly. But I was impressed with the drum solo at the start of the Bruno Mars set.

I also thought that was the best part of the halftime show too. That drum solo rocked!!

Bruno Mars is very talented. He has a wide range of songs. Check him out on youtube. The Red Hot Chili Peppers definately suck and sort of wrecked his performance. Oh, yea, those fake fans around the stage are just plain stupid. It is like a phoney laugh track on a sit-com.
Payton Manning also sucked. With 2:14 left in the first half he completed a pass to Welker and it was his first well thrown ball.

I'm not a huge fan of Bruno Mars' style of music, but I do appreciate good music in any genre - and that was good music. - And I too am a huge fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so as soon as I heard Bruno going into "Give It Away" - I knew that it was going to be an epic moment for me. And I just love the way they ended it w/ the different troops dedicating the last song to their loved one. It was a classy act - something that is not often synonymous with Superbowl half time acts.

I don't normally watch the game,I watch the commercials and the halftime shows.

I agree with the OP. The halftime show sucked. So did most of the commercials. One of the few times for me that the game was better than either. This years game and last years actually kept my attention for a change.

I have to agree. It was the most boring superbowl ever and the half-time show left much to be desired.
