It's a shame that social medias have become so prominent in society,

some crap stories are surfacing over much more important ones, even the major news outlets are jumping to please

the neurotic twitter crowd.

what is being regarded as important issues is now being decided by the lowest common denominator.

Some studies revealed that "roughly 80% of posts to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook consist simply of announcements about one's own immediate experience."

Which oddly enough is not that much different than CB radio or other personal forms of communication such as phones -- just more reach and move volume.

I guess it's a matter of opinion. You will always have people using a platform for what it is intended for, and simply put... the knuckleheads as well.

Do you consider yourself the lowest common denominator? Because it's you who decides what is true and what is important today. Personally I prefer this (even if it does take more effort) to having the "media" decide for me in a neatly packaged 30 minutes or a front page.

It's always been a myth that the media (left or right) is unbiased. From the very first pamplet to roll off a press to today, there has always been a bias. It can be obvious and oderous or it can be as subtle as a reporter simply choosing one adjective over another in a report. Try watching the same story on any given night on FOX, CBS, NBC or ABC and you'll see what I mean.

The very social media you are critizing is what is allowing you to make that point here and now.

The best rides; the best experiences, are the ones which demand we take a little control. I'd rather go to a go-cart track then get on a ride at a park which is on tracks.

Is this really a new trend, though? It seems more like the problems are just getting easier to see. People have always gone for shallow, sensational entertainment. Social media just lets other people shove their information addiction in front of you, doesn't it?

With all due respect, you either have a very cynical and narrow view of the now and the past or you're trolling.

I think the reason social media has become so prevalent in modern journalism is because journalists don't get paid like they once did. Newspapers and News networks don't have the audience they've had in the past, so they can't really afford to pay journalists. So that leads to lazy and cheap journalism.

Social media is a God-send to lazy cheap journalists. They don't have to actually go out and dig up a story - they can let a story come to them via social media. Just put a few of the more prominent figures into your social media feeds, and wait for them to say something stupid or controversial. Or wait for a trending topic, and jump on it. It's sad, but until we find some larger reliable news sources, this may be the way it is for some time to come.

I think you're on to something with your whole post, but this really stood out given how far off the rails our larger news sources are going, at least in the US. CNN just killed its investigative journalism division altogether. I don't know how or when we're going to come back from that, but I think we really have to.

We were never really there to begin with. News hasn't gotten any dumber, we've just gotten smarter.

Social media is the backbone of online marketing. And also of the day to day life. In another way we can say that social media is the another alternative of television. Yes certain stuffs are there which may not be more interest to the audience. But still there is a negative where ever there is a positive.
