A Short Rant About Health

I have three employees who are sick right now.

Two of whom I will have to work for if they can't make it to work.
The third causes scheduling consternations.
All cause work to back up and cause me to work more hours.

All three have in common that they do not take good care of
themselves. Eating, exercise, lifestyle...

Also, all three smoke a lot and drink a lot - which I think weakens the
immune system to say the least.

Now I know why we read about businesses adding up the costs of smoking
and fitness ...

Take care of yourselves so you don't inconvenience
others and cost your employer time, money, effectiveness...
(In my case it's TLC issues for my hotel, my time/personal life,
and how I give people work hours/fairness.)

I inherited these employees because the owner did not screen.
It is hard to find good - even mediocre - help in this little mountain,
but I'm going for non-smoking, non-drinking, and no drug users for my
next hires. Also, I'm ending seniority and just rewarding performance -
until I have equally good performing employees and have to use seniority
as the tiebreaker.

I've learned that even with the small population, you can still set your
sights on high quality employees.

End of rant. Thank you for reading.

I think you are missing something important. Instead of focusing on blaming a few not-great employees - start rewarding the dependable ones.

It's just one of those grrr days when I have to change everything I planned
to do before the weekend. (And work two more shifts.) Also, things like I gave
one of the dependable, good ones the day off only to have one call in sick.
Also, it means I work the desk instead of doing some maintenance or replacing
older mattresses... Very small team here.

Exactly the plan. It's what I meant when I said I'm pretty much getting rid
of seniority - rewarding performance - and hiring with screening for smoking and alcohol.

One case in particular, I'm stuck because the owner is afraid of paying unemployment
and feels sorry for this one because she has been here a while and probably can't get
      hired anywhere else...

Everyone has those days at work, and its even harder when you are a supervisor because you are the one that has to fix the problems caused by someone else.

    Hang in there!
