Check out Jimmy Fallon doing the Polar Plunge in Chicago wearing a regular suit:

Have you ever done something like this? Did anything get frozen and fall off?

      I live Northeast Ohio.

The winter we been having with the freezing temps and snow,
everytime I step outside my front door it's like taken a
      polar plunge.

I don't live in Ohio, but I do agree with that. The weather has been horrible and cold.

Did it by accident once when I was ice skating on the river and broke through some thin ice. Had to hike a good mile or so through the woods, soaking wet, in stocking feet, running through the snow to get home before I froze to death.

Never really thought it was something I'd like to do again.

I did it by accident once when I was checking my trap line.
I went in almost up to my waist, naturally it was on the coldest day we had here that winter. By the time I made it back to my truck I couldn't bend my legs and my ski mask had frozen to my beard making breathing a little tricky. I had to pull myself into my truck and turn the heat on till I could move my legs again.
The tricky (and long) part was trying to walk up a hill alongside a spillway that was solid ice. Thought I was going to die that day.

I did that once. Only there was no water, just snow.......and I had a couple layers of clothes on...and boots....and gloves.......and coat. But it was at least this cold outside........

Dennis - what a horrible experience. I'm surprised you still have feet.

Believe me, I've probably never run that far that fast at any other time in my life. That's why I took my skates off, because I could run a lot faster without them. I was probably half-way home before the cold started getting to me.

It was a long time ago and memories do get hazy, but as I recall, when I broke through the ice I was on the shore looking back at the hole in the ice before I really knew what happened. Instinct totally took over.

Our property bordered the river. I had quite a few adventures there. Sometimes I wonder how I lived through some of the stuff we did back then.

Sure was Sal. When you, Munchie, and me went to the creek we went down (and up) the same way I went I that day.
You know me if I survive a bad experience I can laugh at it
It will take me a while to laugh at this cold winter though. We've been averaging about 17 degrees below normal almost every day since January with no end in sight

DoooooooooooooooooooooooD! The word "shortcut" never came to mind? I'd have risked the ticket for being in the cemetery. In fact, at the point a ride in the back of the cop car might have been more than welcome.

I'm glad I had the experience as a kid rather than as an adult. Somehow I think I'd be more aware of how miserable I was if I had been older. I was only about 11 or 12 years old, don't recall exactly. I went chest deep. I got too close to the spillway and the ice wasn't as thick there.

I have a friend who takes the Polar Bear Plunge every year. He tried to talk me into it for about 10 years before he finally gave up.

I've totally done this before! In fact, years ago, I wrote a column about it!
The dive will wake you up really fast. It's not being underwater that's so bad; it's when you surface that's the problem!
I'd do it again, though. It was for a good cause.
