I haven't purchased any new music since around 1985 so I can't help you with new artists.

This new wave of pop music is beyond me and I don't really understand it but I'm slow to be highly critical of it since it belongs to a different generation.

Seems like they don't even build the music up before they jump into the really get excited part of a song. They just jump into it.

I don't think they have made many love ballads either.

I really tried listening to it with the kid when I drive her to school but most of it sounds like there's a weakness in the radio signal but there is none - plus there's no bass to me.

It seems as different from the music I grew up with as rock and roll was from Jazz when rock came into being in the early 1950s.

Mine ran out in the 80's as well. So these days, I write and listen to my own music. That way, I don't become disinterested in what I'm listening to when a new song I write doesn't live up to my expectations. I just go and write another one and hopefully I'll be into that one. Nothing worse when you think your own music stinks.
Hard to find a good song out there these days[which I'm sure there are], especially when the radio screaming ads at you all the time and the DJ's love to hear themselves talk.

Yesterday, I saw three blonde girls outside my window doing the Gangnam style dance on the circle in the middle of a street roundabout. Even I can recognize that dance. It is incredible how a Korean song and video made for a Korean audience became such a surprise international hit. No one expected that, not even Psy, the guy who made it.

He's got a lot of songs that are different. I probably wouldn't buy an album, but I have bought a couple individual MP3's from Amazon. I really don't buy a lot of albums anymore, preferring to buy individual songs rather than having to pay for songs I don't want to get the songs I do want.

That was frustrating back in the day. Buy a CD or record only to find two or three good songs and the rest - bad or not so much.

I hear ya, Dan. Those bands that slopped together too many "filler songs" didn't stay popular near as long as their contemporaries who tried to make each song stand on it's own merit.

That's one of the great things about the Internet, you can get the good songs you want without having to buy the flops.

That's one of the things that impressed me about Nanci Griffith - one of my all time
favorites. 12 or 15 tracks I either liked a lot or loved.

I agree with you, guys. Love being able to only purchase the songs that move or touch me and not the ones that miss the mark with me.

Back to the alternative genre, even Pink and Christina Aguilera who have been in the pop genre have recently released songs with that "alternative" sound I'm so fond of.

What the heck. I'll plug Taylor Swift again - my current favorite.
Probably the best thing is that she keeps progressing and I look forward
to her next release later this year.

Meanwhile - if anybody is interested, venture to YouTube and look
at "Back to December","Begin Again", "All Too Well", "Everything has Changed"
"Ronan", "Safe and Sound", "Red" (it kind of grew on me), and "Sweeter Than
Fiction". Of course, the one that put her on the map about 7 years ago: "Tim McGraw".

Interesting range of selections on this thread.

The young talent that has had the biggest impact my numbed mind in recent days is on this video that I randomly found when I was being a smart-a$$, searching for a great guitarist who wasn't an aging White rock star:

  I don't listen to much modern stuff. Seems mediocre to whats been before. There seems to be no new distinct genres coming out Seems like they are all exhausted.
  
  However, a good song, however it is dressed up is still a good song. And in that I don't mean great singing or witty lyrics, just a plus in my books. Secondary considerations. A good melody. A good tune, memorable.
  
  I would like to see a modern classical musician compose stuff for the limitless sound capabilities of the synthesizer. Take it seriously for once. That would be a whole new direction.
  
  Tomita did a few albums and one in particular was re-doing some Debussy pieces. This worked out very well. Imagine music of that caliber done with the modern synth. (this was done years ago)

It sure is a challenge for me to arrange a time-slot to listen to these songs when my son is insisting on watching Lego review videos. Go listen on cell phone? Not likely with a little detective on my trail.
