I heard the POPE wasn't interested but I could be wrong.

The fracas is typical of any movie with a biblical slant - get people to argue about it and increase the exposure.

I plan to see it - when it's released on PPV or Netflix.

        Agree with the above.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie (4th April here) but given the cast and the reported "beat your chest stuff", I can't help but think this particular Bible story was transposed to modern screen as an excuse to churn out another violent movie with the "fall of man" being the convenient premise.

On the upside I'm hoping to be proven wrong!

People sound like they do for every other high-profile Biblically-based movie. Some buy in wholesale. "This movie is going to be life-changing, revolutionary, and will convert the movie-going world!" Then there are the naysayers: "This movie adds to what the Bible says and is therefore sacrilege. There will be wanton debauchery in the streets as a result of this Satanic and evil film."

Personally, I really appreciate the Focus on the Family statement. The director is not a theologian, nor does he claim to be. It's inspired by the text, but it's a Hollywood film! Just watch Spiderman 3 or X-Men 2! Anyway, I'm interested in seeing it as well. As far as the "beat your chest" stuff, I'm easy to please, so that's fine--no need for sophistication here! XD

I wonder if they asked any rabbis to comment. A lot is made of this being a Christian story, but it is in the old testament, and Jewish also.

But they got some good reviews and a number I recognize as valid, so they aren't token nobody's.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble about Noah's flood being a "Christian" or "Jewish" or "Muslim" story....but the flood story is based on an even older story, The Epic of Gilgamesh. This epic was first penned in Babylon, around 2-3k BC.

Most bible stories are based on older cultural stories.

Flood stories in particular crop up all over the place (and probably date back tens of thousands of years..we just can't find them or haven't found them yet) because ancient civilizations typically sprung up next to the sea. When the seas rose for whatever reason, settlements were wiped out and people died. Because people didn't know that the world was round, they presumed that the entire world had flooded.

The shores of the modern world are are set to rise 3 meters this century because of global warming. No doubt our ancestors will have some interesting stories.

Well...while it's easy to verify everything you've posted...

This isn't going to go over well. Sorry. I truly am. And this thread will get deleted. As "The World's Greatest Psychic", I can pretty well guarantee it...and the reactions to your post. Maybe if we kept the posts about the movie..and not the story..but it won't happen. Again, sorry.

Anyway, there is something visceral in these iconic stories. I remember watching The Ten Commandments as a kid and being affected. Most people have very strong feelings about these stories.

I'd love to see a new Sampson movie. David and Goliath. These could be made into epic films.

It's more common than you'd think. Behavioural psychologists have attributed the condition to being frightened at an early, impressionable age, by the family's pet hampster.

I think the first one was done rather well and, from what I understand, kept with the book.

The followup, you refer to, seemed to be an attempt to be edgy and perverted. They took a kind of nice, albeit weird, childrens story and changed it to some weird trip on a psychoanalyst couch.

I loved the first one Steve and I watched it at Christmas. I think I just thought the new one would be a modern version of the first film, which it wasn't.

Anyway, I started it and now we're both dragging the Noah thread off topic.

I've found the only way I can enjoy remakes is to try and not compare them to the original. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Unless I'm watching a documentary I watch a movie to be entertained.
Noah looks like it could be a good entertaining movie for me.

I thought I read somewhere that the first one wasn't much like the book, but here's what Wiki says:

The 1971 and 2005 films are consistent with the written work to varying degrees. The Burton film greatly expanded Willy Wonka's personal back-story borrowing many themes and elements from the sequel. Both films heavily expanded the personalities of the four bad children and their parents from the limited descriptions in the book.
I never saw the second one as I am not a fan of Burton films all that much.

I'm not religious. But some of these stories are awe inspiring. This is really on my short list of Must See movies.

Divergent, Captain America, and Noah (My short list for the next two weeks). And Noah will probably be the most visually stunning. That's just a guess.

I also may see the new 300 movie. The last one was amazing.

There is a new Hercules movie with The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) coming out too. I can't wait. It will have to do, until someone makes a Samson movie on a grand scale. I still get a chill, when I see the old Samson and Delilah movie with Victor Mature.

I agree. And I was just having a little fun with the Waterworld stuff. I've actually been waiting to see a similar comment pop up on a couple of movie sites I look in on from time to time.

I'll see Noah at some point, mainly for the visuals. Crowe's involvement just doesn't do anything for me. I like him in a few things . . . A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator and L.A. Confidential. But he's just not a big draw for me.

Not really excited about Divergent, but I wasn't excited about seeing The Hunger Games either and ended up really enjoying it (and the second).

Looking forward to the next Captain America, also. I thought the first, and the Avengers, were excellent. Marvel seems to really be hitting their stride bringing their heros to the big screen. DC's line just seems to have gotten too dark.

The 300 sequel does look good, and I usually enjoy movies with Dwayne Johnson (except Pain & Gain, which was just awful).

          Anyway, back to Noah . . .
