I personally adore dogs and have 2 rescue dogs (which are my rescue mooses, as one is moose-sized).

What's your preference?

He's a cutie, Barb. Look at the size of those feet.

I have two ebooks out on dogs, had several, just lost my rescue that I cleaned cancer out of in Nov. Was able to get 3 years out of him he didn't have when I met him, and held him while he left for the yonder at the ripe old age of between 16 - 18 somewhere. Then I moved and can't have one over 30 lbs here. 30 lbs to me is a rodent. I plan to move again this fall just because I'm not going to live without the dog of my choice (or its choice, I think is how it really works) for any longer than that. Can't do it.

I love dogs. They're my favorite animal. I have to admit that, after being bitten a few times, once "pretty good" (I could see bone in my arm), I'm a bit phobic. I really hate that because I'm so fond of them, but I can't help how I feel now. I'm sure they can sense my fear, too, so I tend to stay away from dogs I'm not familiar with.

I've never been much of a cat person, though they seem to love me. They always rub up against me. Their dander makes my eyes swell up and water like crazy.

We don't own any animals at the present time, which is good, because we'll likely be moving soon and that could be an issue down the road. I would like to have a black Lab puppy some day and raise him, though. The first dog I ever had as a kid was a black Lab. I love them and so does my wife.

We've done this poll a bunch of times and it always seems to be dogs 2:1 or better. I love all animals and have three dopey boy cats. But they're not so dopey that they'd ever forgive me for giving the thumbs up for dogs.

NOT. If I had to have a breed that was real small, it would probably be an American Husky dog or a beagle maybe. If I had to have that small a dog though - I'd rather have a pig. Can't have a cat. Achoo. I like them okay as people, but I don't need anything stirring up my allergies. Those middle-eastern sand cats are hella cute little things though. I don't know if there's any domestic breeds of them.

That Paul, is because you love your animals enough to make sure they have a good home, even if it's not with you.

I'm the same way....if I can't care for them, I will love them enough to do what is necessary and or right by them, and not think twice about it.

Oh those are close, aren't they? Love those ears. They're a little bigger than a normal cat, too from what I can see. Probably distant relatives at the very least somehow.

It only takes me a few months to heal enough to be ready to take on another little hopeful loving ball of fur. I was going to volunteer at the local shelter, but I bond real fast with a dog and it would be hard for me to have to take them back after a walk. Very. I'll wait not so patiently until I can get a place where I can have a little guy again.

Those savannah cats are about 2 1/2 feet long - plus tail.

My first dog had to be in the passenger seat (driver's seat when she could).
The first day I adopted her, she pushed through the slider windows of the truck bed
to get into the cab - both the camper shell and truck slider windows.

When I was looking for my second dog, the shelter I went to most had these plexi-glass
cages. I went often enough that one dog recognized me through that glass. She would
bark and hop of the bench to greet me. She was a golden retriever mix with long brindle
hair. Very distinctive looking - people commented that she looked like she was part zebra.
Don't know why I did not adopt her as well as the one I did adopt. I think I will get two
                next time.

That is so cool. The last cat we had some years back would fetch bottle caps. Not something we trained him to do. I can't remember if it was me or my wife, but one of us dropped a water bottle cap one day and it rolled across the floor with the cat in hot pursuit. He brought it back right away and from then on he would fetch any time we tossed them.

Love cats. Love dogs, too. Currently have a German Shepherd. She's laying beside my chair right now, finally calming down after being all shook up from the high winds here this morning. She hates high winds and storms, and turns into a big ol' cry baby whenever they pass through.

It can be, but it seems it rarely is. Dogs and cats are very different types of pets. I love dogs but I always have a rescue cat around, but I'm not bonded to them like I am my dogs. But why doesn't anyone ever mention chickens? lol.

I have a preference for dogs, but it's sort of like my preference for tall redheads. Doesn't carry a lot of weight most of the time.

I've had dogs, cats, a pair of Chinese golden pheasant, two bantam roosters, a raccoon, and various rabbits as pets. I've had a wolf and a couple of horses as friends.

Bo was the best of 'em. It's been a year since his "last ride," and it still hurts. So yeah... I'd say I'm a dog person. Doesn't keep me from enjoying time with Dumbass, though.

Wow...similar story here. Along with the dogs, cats, ferrets, parrots and the fish that I mentioned above I have had many other pets as well. As a kid growing up I had mice, gerbils, chameleons, a rabbit and a pony. As an adult I owned a coon...but only for two days as my dog tried to tear through the walls to get at him. I ended up giving the coon to a business partner of mine and the masked bandit went on to wreak havoc on his condo building for several years. That coon could get in anything and everything including other condo units!

I never owned any of the beautiful Chinese golden pheasants that you had...however I did photograph a pair of them back in 2003. They are very cool looking birds, no doubt.

        The male.

        The female.

And just for you a shot of one of my ferrets...this one was named Fox.

This ferret actually dragged off one of my kittens in the middle of night and stashed it underneath my kitchen cupboards...I had to rip out the floor of the cupboard just to rescue that kitten. How he stuffed him through a 1 to 1 1/2 inch opening I will never know! Not only did I get that kitten back I also found dozens of items that the ferret had stolen from me over the course of a year or so.

Last Saturday was the one year anniversary of losing my beautiful girl, "Baby." We shared our lives for almost 14 years and she was a faithful companion and protector. Loved by all who knew her she brought joy into the lives of many, besides myself. Her passing has been a traumatic experience that has left a hole inside me that can never be filled. She was a very special creature.

It's painful to admit that I was able to feel more love and understanding for her than I have ever been able to muster for any two-legged animal. Then, again - she WAS pure of heart.

Baby and my cat "Twiggy" were acquired within a week of one another and they were as close as a dog and a cat could possibly be. Twiggy was as devastated by the loss as much as I was. For weeks she stood at the foot of Baby's bed (that she would never tread on without her permission) and wailed in horrific fashion. Since that time, a cat that lived its life as if it barely knew I existed has never been more than two feet away from me. She now sleeps by my head every night, just as she did with Baby.

While I showered affection on Baby, it wasn't until her passing that I became fully aware of the unique sensitivities of a cat. They are sensitive, loving creatures in their own unique and peculiar way.

I was named after St. Francis of Assisi and have always had a strong affinity for all animals. We have a Blue Heron that nests not far from my house. Almost every day that she is out and about she alights on my dock and spends a few minutes. In the 10+ years she has lived nearby not one of my neighbors has ever had her visit their dock. lol

It's confounding that our pets that can bring such happiness into our lives, then leave us with such an overwhelming sense of profound sorrow. Such is the yin and yang of human existence.

I miss my Baby, terribly. I'd give everything I own to have her by my side and to feel her warm, stinky breath on my face as she licked it until I laughed uncontrollably. She was laid to rest under her favorite tree by the lake, so I am able to be with her, every day. That is both a painful reminder that she is gone forever and a comforting thought knowing that she is still close by in some fashion. Tending her grave brings me solace.

Give your pet an extra hug today then look deep into its eyes and tell it how much you love it. If you are of the mindset that they don't understand a single word that you are saying, then you don't know anything about animals. They truly understand the message of unadulterated love.

    Cheers. - Frank

P.S. Baby, acquired as a stray was mostly Pit Bull. A finer breed of dog you will not encounter. She didn't have a menacing bone in her body. If you see a bad Pit, blame the owner, not the breed. Ask your vet what breed he would want for his children and then research their place in American history.

I am a cat and a dog person but mainly a pet person in general. From ferrets to parrots I have had them. For about 10 years I was deep into breeding African Cichlids and that hobby/small business ended up consuming three rooms of my house!

Currently I have cats, African Cichlids, and a bird name Larry Bird. Dogs that I have owned in the past include several Dachshunds, a Huskie, a Doberman Pincher and a Black German Shepherd.

A couple of cats I have now act like dogs and that's what I like most about them.

Here are a few of my recent cats...all of them I raised from day 1, as they were all born to cats that my wife and I owned. The cat below named Chicken Worm had to be bottle fed from the one week point in his life. His momma had too many kittens, and unfortunately, she kicked him to the curb. After that happened it was a heating pad and baby formula for him. We actually thought he was dead and I almost drowned him trying to pour fluids into his 99.9% lifeless body. Somehow he snapped back to life and now he is one of my two favorite cats.

There's something special about reading while your pets
    are laying around sleeping.

    -----------------

When I first moved to the mountains of Colorado, the area
was still a bit behind the time. Not much building inspections
and the county was just adopting building codes... Serious
crimes did not make the local papers because the sheriff
had a sort of agreement with the press so others would not
copy cat and the privacy matters...

A man I bought a house from had lived up there since the
1950's and was pushing 80 years old, or more, when I met him. He
had about ten acres and about 25 or 30 feral cats that hung around
his house because he put food out for them on his porch. It was kind
of cool to pull up to his house for a visit and see a bunch of them sort
of greeting you - not to close. Only one would actually get close enough
    for him to touch.

A little while later, someone - volunteer or county, I don't know - did
come in and sterilize the cats and so on. The man soon sold everything and
moved to Arizona. Of course there's a few things wrong with the cat scenario,
but he was from a different time.

      Don,

Ferrets wouldn't work for me right now, because of how territorial my cat is. Always liked the idea of them, but I couldn't have just one. Solos require way too much attention that I'd forget to give them most days. It'd be cruelty by neglect.

The thing I loved about the pheasant was the electric blue on the one's wings. It was more walking art than a pet. Low maintenance, though. Leave some corn out and they took care of everything else.

Never personally owned a ferret, but had a pet Mongoose when I lived in Hawaii, where they are abundant. Our dog killed a parent and we found a baby and raised it. Really loved it. Visitors couldn't touch it without it rearing up on hind legs, hissing and baring its teeth, but it was very sociable with us. They are quite small (Indian Mongoose), but able to take care of themselves. They should have never been brought to Hawaii. In hindsight, a pretty dumb plan.

    Mongoose
The small Indian mongoose, reaching no more than a foot or two in height, was originally brought to Puerto Rico and the Hawaiian islands to protect sugar cane fields from rat and snake damage. But instead of acting as an aid for crowd control, the mongoose quickly became a hindrance, harming far more wildlife than anticipated. Now fully settled in Hawaii, the agile creature preys on birds and small reptiles, which injures both the poultry industry and game hunters and costs the island nations $50 million dollars in damages a year. The mongoose has so far caused the extinction of 12 reptile and amphibian species from Puerto Rico, the West Indies and Jamaica.

Felix is an African Grey and the stories of him and the Horde are rather, well, hysterical.

          Nice!

I owned this Senegal for a decade before giving him to my sister. He actually became a bit famous back in the early 2000's with a four page photo spread in Parrots magazine.

This crazy little bird sure could make you laugh...a small bird with bright colors and a VERY BIG personality!

          Cheers!

I'm a bearded dragon person. I've had several. They are quiet, don't need walked outside, don't scratch the furniture, and won't entertain you. It's like having a pet rock, that you roll in the aquarium once a day.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

    Greetings.

Just back from my one week banning which I shall wear as a badge of honor. During that time I decided to end the abject misery that I have been living in since the passing of my sweet girl, 'Baby," by visiting my SPCA to see the dogs that were next on the list to be put down.

It was there that I found 'Honey,' a six-month old female Pit and irrespective of the trepidation that I have been harboring over bringing a new dog into my life at my advanced age complicated by myriad health issues, after meeting her there was just no way that I could walk out knowing about her impending fate.

She is an absolutely lovely girl - well-mannered, gentle, loving and as happy as any dog could be. She was brought into the shelter as a stray and although warned that she wasn't, I was thrilled to discover that she is totally house broken with thrilled being the understatement of a lifetime. She'll obey the basic commands anyone could hope for and is well socialized with other dogs. I hit the doggie trifecta with this girl.

I was afraid that by bringing a dog home that I might have been making a terrible mistake. I was worried that I would be dishonoring Baby in some way, but I can tell already that Honey is going to bring a lot of happiness into my life. It just seemed that the only way I was going to be able to stop mourning Baby's passing so intensely, even after so much time was to get back in the game. I know that nothing can ever replace what Baby and I shared but if my years with Honey are half as wonderful, I will be more than content. Baby was a very, very special girl and the true love of my life. I know that comparing them in any way is not fair to either dog and I would never judge Honey on her ability to measure up to what Baby brought to my life. I think that after a little over a year since she passed on that this is what Baby would want for me. With that said, she already reminds me of Baby in ways that bring a smile to my face. Smiles have been in short supply since Baby first started her decline. Not that I have ever been big in the smile department.

Just thought I'd share my good fortune with all of you. Thanks for listening.

    Cheers. - Big Frank

P.S. Don't let Honey's dazed and confused look bother you. She was still under the effect of her anesthesia from her spaying, earlier in the day.
