I learned French for 5 years at school and passed an exam too. However, when I went to Paris and asked a Gendarme, in French, where the Louvre was, I actually thought he was going to hit me.

I had to ask someone later if I'd said something wrong but it was fine.

Well I see I passed the 16 things not to say in Paris test. Maybe that's why I found the people there absolutely delightful. I heard a lot of horror stories from tourists there, but I never experienced anything close to what a lot of people say, and I went there several times while I lived in Germany.

Also, as in any country - the question isn't "where is.............it's "what's the best way to get to........".
