Let's imagine you had a chance to travel back to 1992. None of the popular websites as we have now exist. And let's assume you have the knowledge you have now. Which website would you build and why?

I would build PayPal as a first choice. The reason is that practically almost every visit has to do with some sort of money transfer which results in a commission.

Amazon for sure, the money I would have by now would be insane, for the small effort of writing such a complex marketplace application. I would go nuts with the features and automation, and make it the most advanced thing going from 1992 on till now!

I would probably have to invent .net early to do it or have a slow PHP site to begin with... lol!

I kind of think ebay would have been a good one to start.

I agree.. PayPal was the first and doing great in mobile. EVERYONE hates them but the name recognision is 2nd to none. .Google was great but it was ADWORDS that put them on the map.

Just a lot of problems and very difficult to solve the problem since so many C/S don't speak English.

I would create SoundCloud and make money off inspiring artists while helping them build their careers. It probably doesn't work like that, but it seems good natured (I also doubt would be as pretty back in web 1.0 though lol)

If this doesn't work out, I'd sit down wait for Nirvana to become mainstream and start earning money to invest on BitCoins in the near future.

That would be Facebook for me LOL. If given two choices, I'd go with FB and Linkedin.

Reason? These are "mints" printing money.

    Mine

Why imitate, when you can create?

Why not be the YOU version, of the next great site?

If it were 1992, I'd have developed Cash With A True Conscience, just like today.

    Great sites guys!

I've read books on how most of these companies (PayPal, eBay, Google) were started and grew and, let me tell you, there was *a lot* more work and challenge to building these companies than it seems.

As an example, when PayPal launched it was technically illegal in 42 of the 50 states. They had to work with the legislature in every one of those states to figure out a way to fit into the law.

What I would start is HotMail. Smart concept, viral, not too much of a technical challenge. Plus the founders of HotMail sold it 18 months after starting it for millions.

Thanks for all your opinions. Nice to see some very popular and some less popular sites that you would want to build. My purpose in asking this question was to see what type of sites other marketers would be interested in building in an early era of the Internet and the reasoning behind it as it may give some insight to others, especially newcomers who want to start their own sites.

I wouldn't develop anything. (That would be way too much work!).

Instead... I'd buy 100's of profitable domains.

Before any of you did. Muahaha.

    Agile Development 101.

For completely passive income I would have looked around at the big names and bought all the comman misspells of them Like Wallmart as opposed to Walmart. Then as soon as they started making sites I could sell the domains to them or re-direct them to their affiliate links.

This would also have avoided any copy-rite infringement on brand names, having misspells.

This idea has been saturated now by the way.
