Go through your document and one by one highlight each of your chapter titles. Once highlighted, click on "Heading One." Do this for the entire document. If you have sub titles you want to show in the TOC, highlight and click on heading two. With this done place your cursor where you want the TOC to appear.

Once you've done this click on the "References" tab above. One of the categories you'll see is Table Of Contents. In Word 2007 it's all the way left. Click that. At the bottom of the drop down box you'll see "Insert Table of Contents." Click that. Another box will open. Click Okay.

There are several fine tuning settings in that box you can play with. I usually just go with the standard default settings. Once you click Okay, your TOC will appear magically where you have your cursor. The items in the TOC will be clickable though you'll need to press you're Ctrl key before you can click. That's it.

Thanks for your tips. I did most of it but when I try to insert new TOC, it stuffs up the table completely. I am using Word 2013. I don't know if that makes a difference.

It might be a bit different.

You don't need to insert it. By tagging your title names with, Header 1, Word compiles/collates everything. All you need to do is access the TOC function and click Okay.

Here's a step by step with screenshots.

There is definitely something wrong because when I try to follow that, I get extra writing and the table changes in a way that it shouldn't.
I am sure it is easy and it is only me that can't get it right...which is very frustrating.
