  • Northerners are so darn "progressive" and "accepting" -- but confront them with an accent from another part of their own country and they lose their minds

Cosby was using the names "Due West", "North", and South Carolina as parts of a comedy bit. He could understand the lady. It's the same thing we do here..... Purposefully misunderstand for comedic effect.

He's just being funny - he is a comedian, after all.

Hate to say it but there are some southern accents that actually are hard to understand.

When I lived in Germany with my then husband, one of my friends was from NC and had uneducated speech habits. There were lots of times I couldn't understand her. My website tech is from NC and I have no problem with his.

I don't think it's where you're from, I think it's the sloppiness or education level in your speech habits. Any dialect can get dicey if people have lazy speech habits.

Haha yeah, I wasn't taking it seriously. Just keeping up the ol' North/South rivalry.

It's like the Northerner that went to a southern restaurant and ordered a glass of 'Asti'. The waitress asked, "Sweet, or plain?"

I remember Kay coming over to my house in Germany and telling me there was a fire on the base. I was freaked and asked what was burning - she said "not a far, a far -with rods". Okay so now I'm trying to figure out what a fire with rods means. Then she said "like the farswheel". Oh - okay, a fair, with rides. LOL.

And, when I was 15 and visited our Southern relatives for the first time in Missouri. One of my alleged (haha) cousins was under and old rusty Ford truck and asked me to hand him the warplers from his tool box. I asked him what warplers were and he said, "You know, war plars!

I told him I knew my way around a tool box, but I had never ever heard of warplars.

Then he proceeded to say, "Oh yeah, I believe you city slickers say wiiiiiire Plyyyyers."

I then picked up his warplers and chucked them at him hitting him on his shin. He never called me a city slicker again!

In South Carolina a lot of people say where do you stay, instead of saying where do you live? When I first moved to SC in 2000 & heard people saying this I thought there was a lot of homeless people around here. Nobody lives anywhere, they just stay wherever...

They also use the word say after a question. Example: Where do you stay? Say. I'm no rocket surgeon but when I'm asked a question I can usually figure out I need to say the answer without being told.

Another one I hear a lot is hamburger meat. This one confused the hell out of me because I always thought hamburger was meat & it wasn't necessary to say it was meat. I assumed everyone knew hamburger is meat.

I was confused the first time I heard someone ask for someone to hand them the spider, too. Spider, in the south is a frying pan. How that one came about, I'll never know.

Makes you wonder how anyone ever was able to communicate at all before the printing press standardized languages.

That explains why Terra does not live in the South.

Well, that and about a gazillion other reasons, lol!

Does anyone know what the southern saying "puttin' on the dog" means?

I still haven't figured that one out yet.

Foot towels instead of bath mats is one that threw me.
The guest that asked me for foot towels was from Missouri.

You immigrated straight into Texas? Holy cow. That must have been cultural shock that felt like a kick to the groin.
