My "fear" comes more from the fact that I have a hole in my inner ear and it feels like someone's sticking a pencil through it when I fly. Solution - chew a piece of gum til the sugary stickiness is out of it then put it in my ear. It does the same thing as a $10,000 gizmo the doctors would fashion to close off the ear. A little rubbing alcohol and a washcloth afterward to clean my ear out and I'm good to go - no pain at all.

I'm not wild about flying but there's no point in being nervous and fearful about something I have no control over.

I take a window seat - have a really good book with me - and I pretty much accept that I'm about to die.

Then, when the plane lands, I'm in a great mood for the rest of the day.

    Bravo,

You said you hate f**ing flying. Do you just hate flying, or do you get anxious while flying?

As others have recommended, get a window seat.

If you get anxious while flying, look up "Gravol", but don't buy the generic brand. I'm almost certain it's available in the UK. You just need to take it in advance of boarding the plane.

If you just find the flight boring, then hell.......drink booze and be happy!

Window seats are great for sightseeing whenever there is something to see besides cloud cover or water. Take a camera and snap pics, especially if there are any UFO's you want proof you've seen.

I'm not afraid of flying. I just abhor being stuck in small, moving places for extended periods of time. It drives me nuts. I read and listen to comedy albums on my phone. Anything to take my mind off the fact that I'm stuck in that damn seat for six hours. Just occupy your mind.

If your flight is seven hours or more, I highly recommend (I am not a medical professional) an Ambien and a couple beers. I did that once flying from Florida to Belgium. The flight felt like it took 45 minutes.

At 100 miles per hour, about 43 hours. But you'd need one of these...

Your question wasn't about what you should do, it was what I do. So I told you.

I've driven from San Diego to the East Coast (and back) on more than one occasion, which is about the same distance of your upcoming flight.

But to respond to this latest question, being from Colorado and having a fear of flying, I'd probably just stay in Amsterdam.

            Honestly, I feel for you.

What makes it worse for me here is the security and I can't take a lighter with me. I have irrational thoughts of the plane going down in a remote place, and can't even start a fire if I survive the crash. While the thoughts are irrational, the feelings are real.

If I had to go, I'd probably try to stay up all night before, then once I board the plane take a couple of sleeping pills (or a couple of shots of Nyquil if they let me take some liquid onboard) and try to sleep for as much of the trip as I could.

The first time I flew in a passenger plane I had 3 hits of speed with me. I got paranoid before I got on the plane and ate all 3.

This explains how Rod Serling got the idea for "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet".

Do you consider Shatner's or John Lithgowe's interpretation of your flight to be the most accurate?

It wasn't really the flight that got to me, but the chance of getting busted.
Flying doesn't really bother me at all. When I stopped flying it was because of all the bull you have to put up with in the airport with the TSA.

I'm not afraid of flying, either. It's crashing that worries me.

I didn't use to be this way and it's something that developed when I was in my late 20s.

I know the stats about how flying is much safer than driving, but it's tough to be rational when one has irrational fears.

I flew into Washington once and instead of landing the plane rear (or wing) wheels first the pilot landed it left side then right side. Scared the crap out of me. I was never to worried about crashing, I figured I'd die from a heart attack before the crash

You might want to download some movies to your tablet so you can watch them to help keep your mind off of flying.

That Twilight movie was one of my favorites.

Anyway OP sorry to hear about your problem, I agree that the best attitude to take when boarding a plane is to accept that

      1) Death is inevitable. Until you accept and overcome this reality things like this can give you phobia. After you make peace with death, nothing can scare you - although certain things can trigger fight-and-flight reactions, that "paralyzing" fear will never happen again. Can't say when exactly this happened with me but I know it did.

      2) You're not going to die. Period. But even if you were - refer to 1

I distract myself by trying to work complicated mathematical equations in my head. I calculate the odds of dying in a plane crash compared to an auto accident, and the odds of this particular flight going down compared to the many thousands of total daily flights that don't crash, etc. etc.

Of course, a mini-bottle or two of wine doesn't hurt either.

    Hi

I am a qualified Hypnotherapist, NLP Master Practitioner and EFT Practitioner and I would suggest that you try EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or the NLP 'Fast Phobia Cure'.

I have helped many people with issues ranging from claustrophobia to suicide and these two techniques are very good. There are also others you can use too, but my guess is that your fear isn't a fear of flying it is possibly the real fear of the plane crashing. That is most commonly what I have found in the many cases I have helped people with.

I have read some of the responses and what people need to realise is although your fear or phobia may not sound logical, they have to realise that of course they will not be! Otherwise it would be as simple as just listening to music!

Do a Google search on 'EFT for Fear of Flying' and see if that helps. If not get back to me.
