Remember the thread about the boy who brought a My Little Pony to class?

Well, here come the Bronies: Grown Men Who Love My Little Pony

Inside the Bizarre World of 'Bronies,' Adult Male Fans of 'My Little Pony'
They build motorcycles. They drink beer. And they love 'My Little Pony.' And--would you believe--there's not anything wrong with that.

Adult male fans of My Little Pony are people, too.

That's the crux of A Brony Tale, a documentary that takes you inside the unusual and unexpected community of grown men who live and breathe everything related to Rainbow Dash, Applejack, and the rest of the pastel-colored animated equine friends. For the uninitiated, My Little Pony is a toy and merchandise enterprise that first became popular in the '80s, but experienced resurgence in 2010 when the animated series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic popularized the franchise for a new generation of little girls. And also, apparently, adult men.

These adult men call themselves Bronies. And they're not what you think.

They're not overly effeminate. Many aren't gay. They aren't predatory, or even being ironic. They are just guys. Dudes. Dudes who like My Little Pony.

I think the term "grown men" is somewhat inaccurate.

So that blind people can hate them as well.

Plenty of adults enjoy animation combined with good writing and voice acting. Regardless of whether the material is aimed at one gender.

I sometimes wonder about those who are into cosplay, though...

Maybe that's a way to say "not sexually active". If the guy in the picture is getting any....I'd hate to think what the woman is dressing up as....

I have yet to see an episode of My Little Pony. I have done screenwriting critique in the past (ultimately leading me to conclude: Write a novel instead. Better chances to be produced into a film and better copyright deal in the long run). The article mentioned good writing and character development and I have to admit that piqued my interest.

I found it very interesting that a lot of guys in the military became fans of the show because their daughters turned them on to it.

This thread might be enough to make a person wonder if we're part of an intentional promotional ploy for the show, LOL.

It would have been nice if they paid me, but I simply got curious enough to take in a couple of episodes on Netflix, and I have to admit I liked them. And the documentaries about the fandom.

Oh my god! to think I could be free from these grown men liking/fetishy MY Little Pony not being on the WF..loa and behold..a little girls toy..

I'm a Mod of two non business forums and we have one strange guy who is fanatically into MLP..that he would argue, debate and force his MLP opinions on other members.

So yeah, these bronies are real and grown men at that.

I only made the comment as I found it interesting that MLP would be talked about on a business site..that may as well be odd as well.

Sorry. Didn't mean to offend. I only even heard about My Little Pony because of news about a little boy getting bullied over taking a lunchbox, bag, or something with the show's picture on it. I find the phenomenon of show groupies comprising grown men bizarre, but I wouldn't think of intruding upon anyone's joy in it. It's good when a man can find joy in something, be it re-constructing old-model cars, or dressing up like the characters in a cartoon for little girls. Harmless fun is all good...even if it is downright bizarre.

No offense taken thunderbird. personally I find the phenonem of grown Adult men/bronies weird..the fact that MLP was a toy created for little girls, that would interest men..I mean, I can understand Fathers taking an interest in their daughter hobbies and the like but to actually take an active involvement is to my mind over the top..each to their own though.

    First of all, it sayd:

They’re not overly effeminate. Many aren’t gay.
    Translation?

They ARE effeminate, and thus likely homosexual.
Many claim to not be homosexual.

I mean to say they aren't OVERLY effeminate!?!?!?!? That is like saying a woman is not overly pregnant. If she is pregnant, she is pregnant.

I can understand a man watching a kids program with his kids, to be there and see what they are watching. I could understand him learning the lingo, and getting into it a bit. But being a FANATIC? Dressing up? NOPE!

That said, Mikaedi should EXPECT this kind of thing. There is a reasonable overlap with things like this and LARP and with LARP and role playing games. So it fits the demographic of his forum. It is only PERIPHERALLY tied to sales overall, so it should have less coverage here.

In fact, 85% of Bronies identify themselves as heterosexual.

These guys aren't just fans; they are rebelling against gender and social stereotypes.

One teen told us, "People make fun of me, but I really don't care."

Another added, "It's weird that we're watching My Little Pony. We are teenage guys, we shouldn't be doing that. But it doesn't really matter. So what if it's weird."

Research done by the Bronies shows there are as many as 12 million Bronies in the United States alone. The fan page Equestria Daily has had over 400 million page views since 2011.

It gets a whopping 175,000 page views a day.

There is also a booming market for pony art. Michelle Debruin was blown away by the success of her first convention, "Within the first five hours of that convention, we were sold out of half of our most popular lines," she said

Bronies are also attracting interest from researchers as well. Psychotherapist Marsha Redden is studying them.

"This is the first time that we know of, that anyone has begun studying a fandom from the beginning," said Redden.

A fandom is a group of extremely dedicated fans, like Trekkies. Or in this case, Bronies.

Redden's research found that the bulk of Bronies are male, age 15 to 30.

"When you talk about Bronies, and you talk about young men who are fans of My Little Pony, which is a little girls cartoon, the first thing that everybody thinks of is they're gay," said Redden, "And that's not what we found."

Redden's says very few Bronies identified as gay. In fact, 85 percent of Bronies identified as heterosexual.
