Suggestions Welcome!!

  • AVG 8.5 is free or a good paid one is Kaspersky
  • And I always have to vote for Panda.
  • I use AVG Anti Virus Pro. also ccleaner to keep my registry clean and superantispyware 4.16 pro. I use zonealarm free version for just a firewall. I hate antivirus programs that have the antispyware, anti virus, and firewall all in one. Uses up to much system resources at 1 time.
  • Like others have said, there are free ones that work good. If you are going to pay for one then download a trial version before you buy it to see if you like it. Almost all of them have free trials. I use to have NOD32 antivirus which worked real well. It's real popular amongst computer nerds.
  • Man I have Parite.B and W32/Virut.NPB

My computer is one sick mutha - gets a pink screen and freezes - gets serated lines on the screen - its infected logon.exe and I'm pretty sure explorer.exe.

Everytime I clean it it comes back after a few minutes.

I've scanned again and again in safe mode with several antivirus and spyware apps.

Now I'm DL'ing several more for my final attack. If it doesn't work I'm getting a new hard drive.

I can still access all the data on this one if thats the case - just I would prefer to avoid reinstalling all my applications.
  • Avast is the best in my opinion - it even detects the JS redirect viruses.
    And it's free.

    • That's right, I am using Avast. It's good and detele many virut in my company.
  • AVG works for me very well..
  • Man this thing has me F&^%$%

I cant use the net or anything at home. Can only use safe mode most of the time - damn it.
  • Nod & spybot search and destroy .
  • Kainsmoney - Spybot search and destroy is for spyware. I agree it's good - but I use it along with my avast anti-virus program - they compliment each other, one does virus one spyware. If you are using just one or the other you are missing out.
  • Hi, try Avira.com its free and detects most trojan. it's important that your system is clean before you install an antivirus software because most bugs can "hide" if your system is already infected.

    • Definetly Avira or avast.
Avg Well i have seen to many sad stories about that one.
Zonealarms free firewall is good but you get very few options to modify anything like opening ports and choosing what to let in or not.
Comodo definetly if you plan to have a Full suite and dosen't use much system resources either.
      And Free to.
  • VIRUT is the virus from hell

You cant get rid of it with anti virus or anti spyware

I formated, partitioned and reinstalled - my machine still has it

This has really frigged up my week as I am building a new blog portal

So now I am trying to recover a little data and then I will do a zero write on the whole HDD and flash the BIOS - then VIRUT will be gone.

But unfortunately many of my backup disks are infected.
  • I just bought Kaperskey Internet Security 2009...made my PC running slow..then switch back to free version avast
  • Make sure when you boot up use a clean CDROM or a USB stick. You need to remove virus without any trace from memory or operating system
  • I use eset smart security 4 and have never had a computer attack since I started using it. It catches everything.

I have tried all of the ones mentioned in posts above before and still got my computer wiped out because they let stuff through.

Since getting eset I have never had any problems again.

More information here. ESET - Antivirus Software with Spyware and Malware Protection
  • Man it feels weird to have a working system again.

At least I learned how to do data recovery and disk wiping last week.

I still haven't wiped it - will in a day or two but it appears to be stable for now.

  • Nod32 is good but symantec is better against virut - they both totally failed anyway

I am wiping the drive completely now as it reappeared.

well the zero write still didnt get rid of it - so maybe it didnt overwrite the boot sector ???

shit i just want to use my computer

  • I use Avira in my laptop. It's very efficient and useful when detecting viruses.

    • Gareth did you turn off system restore?
That is where the majority of these things hide.
Microsoft ought to change it's name to virus restore as that is what it mainly does.
    • Me too, I am using Avira Free. Very good when detele virut.

    • Why are you bring back a thread that is 2.5 years old without offering anything new in it?
And oh yeah, read the sig rules.

    • I know. You made a similar comment on another thread this guy dug up. Now we both knew he was on his way to the grave, didn't we?
  • There are a ton of anti-virus programs out there you could try Trend Micro
  • I use Avira and have never spotted a problem or a virus anywhere, plus it is not that expensive too.
  • Avast is best anitivirus that i have ever used .
  • Avast is the best ....
  • Norton antivirus, its the best antivirus program I have ever used in this many years. There are many antivirus programs, but not all of them are as good as Norton is. In my opinion, if you really care about your data then Norton is the best option for you.
  • Hi EthanLevin123,

As a professional in computer network managing, I use (MSE) as a quick Anti-Virus solution for some of my costumers. It is backed up by a very reputable and very strong company: Microsoft. I used it, my customer's used it and it's FREE. I agree that MSE had a slow start when it came in the market but it is now one of the best FREE anti-virus option out there.

I saw first hand, detections of virus and complete deletions with MSE where Norton (Symantec), a paid version, couldn't even find it or delete it. (same virus by the way!).

Here's a professional review about MSE on techsupportalert.com, it ranked second best after Avast as best free Anti-Virus :

Search for MSE on Google and you will find it right away.

    Regards
  • Although most people won't believe it. Microsoft Security Essentials is actually a great tool and it's free. They really did do a good job on that. Apart from that I would supplement with another free anti-virus like AVG.

McAfee and Norton tend to be too bloated so I stay away from those...

Also don't use IE to browse, instead use firefox and chrome.

Most compromises on machine will come from visiting a malicious website with an insecure browser or opening infected attachments through email.
