So about that missing plane...

Forgive me for asking this, especially with the families of the people on board no closer to some form of closure.

Apart from some disturbing rumours and what appears to a be no mention of it on the news, I was just intrigued if anyone else had heard anything.

Not only did the plane vanish but media coverage seems to have done the same.

Indeed ... I was thinking this, the other day.

Some of the early theories were on a par for credibility with those delusions about Google penalties for duplicate content. :p

I suspect that by the time they discovered with any confidence what the correct search-area really was, it was close to the time for the signal transmission from the "black box" to be fading out - they're supposed to last about a month, I think? But it also turned out that most of that area was far deeper than anywhere where a plane has been lost before, too? And deeper than where a black box signal has ever been heard before, of course ...

How long did it take to locate that Air France flight that went down in the Southern Atlantic a few years ago? This is going to take longer, surely, because the search area is less well defined and the ocean deeper?

Until it's found, there won't be a way to stop some people believing in alien abduction theories. For something far more realistic (and for many other reasons, too), I strongly recommend this outstanding little book, by a great writer (but avoid the movie, which is bitterly disappointing and just silly): Millennium: John Varley: 9780441006779:...Millennium: John Varley: 9780441006779:...

      Thanks Alexa,

It was just odd the way it went so quiet.

As for the conspiracy theories, well, you can't stop that. You have a point though, in the area they said it was in, I doubt they'll find it fast.

What was funny is that on all the films and TV nonsense, they can pick out a small apple from a satellite and drop a mouse on it.

Planes on the other hand don't seem to appear on satellite until you look through the records for a few days.

Nice to see you back again.

Or indeed vice-versa (though they can also have animal charities after them, if they do it that way round).

          Conspiracy theory's???

No, l never mentioned UFO's as a reason once!

More likely though is it has broken into several pieces and some of the main pieces, took quite a long time to sink.

So the black box could still be picked up!

There was a documentary on ABC TV (4Corners) down here that claimed the plane was shot down in the South China Sea as part of joint US/Thai war games.

Then there's the theory it was getting too close to Diego Garcia and was shot down as a precaution.

It all seems so suspicious that I don't think we'll ever find out what really happened.

YEAH.NONE of this was handled right. The ODD thing is that someone likely DOES know but can't come forward because giving the information could show an overlap with enemy airspace and start an international incident. I bet C* knows what happened!

This happened in such a place which means it was either shot down, or someone tried to hijack it. In either event, they KNEW that the search would be frustrated. The erratic behavior of the plane could have been due to turbulence or damage and the autopilot's method of handling it. It is still conceivable that the crew had no time to respond.

By now, all the obvious wreckage could have been cleaned up or sunk. The plane could have been disassembled. The idea that the plane could ever have been used in international waters covertly is a pipe dream. The manufacturer would be known, and most countries would INSIST on a flight plan and transponder. They don't just LET you fly over airspace or land/takeoff. The US is now supposed to, for planes inside US borders, atleastin the lower 48, after the 9/11 incident, have a policy to have jet fighters escort such planes to the nearest capable airport, and demand that they land.

SO, as a plane, that plane is not very usable.

How long can they drag out coverage of nothing to report? I'm glad the coverage has ceased. The plain is gone. The passengers are gone. Nothing has been found. Everything else is rumor.

It's the US/Thai thing I heard as well but little else. I agree though, this will take a long time.

      About 4 or 5 weeks.

They reported virtually nothing for approximately that long.

I just meant, we did hear when they did searches, now we don't. I thought perhaps they'd called off the search but that wasn't mentioned.

Sorry to drag it up for you again Suzanne.

I mentioned this because of what happened here with bird flu. I watched for months as it relentlessly made it's way across Europe, we were all told this could be a pandemic, it was front page news all that time and then it happened. A dead swan was found in Scotland, dead from bird flu. We were all told to brace ourselves then...

Same thing happened. Never a heard another thing about it ever since. Bugger all. Nothing.

Forgive me, I was just curious.

The last I heard was the searches were called off. This was after the best-case life span of the batteries for the black box. Plus, major searches are very expensive, so it isn't feasible to keep them going forever.

          Cheers Kurt,

That was what I couldn't find, that they'd officially called it off.

Suzanne, I stand corrected, there really is nothing to report at all.

Yep, we get the usual, latest cold virus spreading through Australia, and the standard number of people that will die from it!

But for relatively healthy people it will just suck for a while, and that is it!

The media always hype it up, to sell more newspapers or as you have said, do another boring 1 hour special, full of scientists theory's!

But in this instance it gets worse, there is word of a movie!

It seems to be in the alternative niche, but still a full length movie! Bad taste considering people are still grieving, and that it is specializing the available facts!

You can still get almost daily updates if you watch CNN - which is one reason I totally stopped watching CNN. That network seems to have gone to the side of "heart wrenching tragedies" and abandoned news for the most part.

What became clear was the searchers aren't even sure they are looking in the right place or the right ocean. The little sub thing was damaged by the searchers and the expensive search was stopped until someone decides where to look next.

So it is like when my place was robbed. The police decided to IGNORE ME! They threw away ALL the evidence, some I PERSONALLY handed them AT THE STATION!!!!! They waited until witnesses left and/or lost the ability to back things up with film, receipts, etc...(I found a witness for them that got a commission on over $700USD, where the average is on $50, STATED BY A COWORKER OF THEIRS!!!!!!) and when the witnesseshad ample time to forget everything.

THEN, they had the AUDACITY to tell me what you you just said here!

"Your case is 'open but inactive'"

In other words..... "We haven't closed the case, it is merely cold, and we will keep looking and track these people down."

I went to the station AGAIN, and it was like a who's on first episode! They said I should come to the station next time. I told them I DID! They said the people using the card likely just bought the cards. I told them it was STILL a FELONY, and they could probably lead the police to the thieves.

            So YEAH, open but inactive.

HEY, LAPD!!!!!!! It has been over 20 years! I haven't forgotten!

In this case the cost alone is so high it makes sense to stop for a bit and reconsider and look at what evidence is real and what is conjecture and then proceed. Australia has paid much of the search cost but don't know how long that will continue.

OK, then let's close the LAPD! THAT would make me happy! GEE, I have seen cases were people run thousands of miles away, change their names, looks, and even citizenship and the "authorities" don't stop looking for THEM after a few decades.

They are also questioning the original pings again and blaming the Malay Air force for not reacting (sending jets up etc) when they noticed the plane was off course

Those comments were made by Mahathir Mohamad, an ex-prime minister and virtual dictator. Quite a few people in Malaysia believes that the disappearance of the plane was engineered by the CIA in order to sow discord between Malaysia and China.

Malaysia practiced a racial discriminatory policy since the 70's where people of the Malay get reserved university places and jobs in the civil service. With this kind of policy, you are never going to get top people in the government and civil service.

There is a list of such "End of the world..we have to be upset.... sound bites".

I listened to a comedian, Alonzo Bodden, rattle them off at the climax of his act. It was funny, but also reminded me of our short attention span, and our ability to panic over everything, and anything.

It shouldn't be surprising. The evidence was stretched to fit the media insanity.

In something like this most of the "trails" lead to nothing - many of the "leads" are false leads and investigators have to wade through a lot of false info to find the reality.

In the rabid coverage of this missing plane every smidgeon of 'fact' was "breaking news" - whether relevant or not.
