New Zealand's iconic kiwi is most closely related to the extinct elephant bird of Madagascar rather than the Australian emu as previously thought.

The findings stem from a study by the University of Adelaide that was based on ancient DNA analyses of elephant bird bones...

How I dream of one day taking hikes through the Southern Alps and New Zealand wilderness.

As a non-New Zealander, to me it is land of LOTR!

Does any reasonable person REALLY care where strange species came from? Take marsupials, for example. For one thing, I don't know if bones can even reveal such traits. I DOUBT it. But even if they DID, if they currently only exist, and only exist alive in australia, can't we just call them AUSTRALIAN? And that is NOT a racial thing. I wouldn't care and even if I did, all know that the first residents of australia were effectively black, the aborigines.

Do they know what a stegasaurus looks like? When I was a kid, they said it looked ONE way. Last I heard, they said they were WRONG, and it was one of two OTHER ways.

It's interesting figuring out how they got there and maybe why. It's also interesting to learn what species are related.
For example in the plant kingdom Brassica oleracea is the botanical name for cabbage, cauliflower, Broccoli, and brussel sprouts and they are all in the mustard family.

Isn't mustard also related to potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants?

But HEY! People may have thought pandas were related to bears and it turns out they are related to racoons and they don't even really know if pandas Red panda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

are related to the giant pandas! Giant panda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Well, now they say the panda is related to the racoon, and the giant panda is related to the bear.

I wonder how closely the panda is related to the bear. It looks and acts a bit like the bear, but bears prefer to be very carnivorous. Giant pandas prefer to be vegetarians.

The two types of pandas have similar feet, similar preferences, love bamboo, have some similar types of markings, and prefer to be vegetarians.

No mustard is in the Brassicaceae Family and the others are in the Solanaceae or Nightshade Family.

Not entirely accurate. Polar bears are exclusively carnivors, for obvious reasons.

However brown, black and Asiatic black bears are omnivores and get most of their calories from vegetation. Brown bears can often be found grazing on grass in meadows and eat berries, etc.

The hump the brown bear has on it's shoulders is pure muscle and is used to turn over rocks in order to find and eat insects, which would be called an "insectivore", if that was all it ate.

There are a few exceptions. The Kodiak brown bears do eat a lot of salmon and are the largest brown bears on Earth.

AS a Kiwi I find it absurd and crazy that our National bird is a two legged flightless dumb ugly bird..have you seen one? our NZ Scientists and GVMT go all out in protecting this ridiculous animal...god at least the Aussies have the Kangaroo which though they look on them as a pest which is a bit weird..at least they have a cute factor about them..hehe.

It would be better have the kiwi as our national delicacy though not sure what they'd taste like!!!?

Depends on what Kiwi you're talking about?

If you're talking about our national flightless bird..then it'a fact, they can't fly.

If you're talking about the human variety! then the comment could be termed offensive which the second part of your reply is you!!! no more said

Haha Richard, close but not close enough..it's actually the other way round..we have always been proudly Kiwi's, the fruit was changed to Kiwi Fruit in the 60s..it used to be known as Chinese Goose-berries..and they're yummy.

Yes I've seen the film, and Australia, I have family there and lived there for a short while. I was responding to Whateverpedias comment below about Bondi, which is in Australia and full of poms

Yup, we have them here too. I didn't realise that about the fruits name change though or the original name. My comment was a bit tongue in cheek.

Hardraysnight was responding to me, responding to Whateverpedia about Bondi. Though I don't think he understood what I wrote.
