Do You Ever Green Screen?

I've been experimenting with green-screening using techniques that don't actually involve a greenscreen. My attempts are clunky and coarse, but I'm having a blast. I've been involved in video production before, but never as someone actually using the camera, editing, and suchlike. My son, 4, loved this one:

Get him to sing and dance, and you could have a Sean Lennon contender! Sean is ALSO part asian.

I remember it being better, and him looking more asian, but....

Apparently, it was made around 1984

LOL. My son doesn't have a mega-famous pop-star dad's name to make him famous by default. He wasn't even performing. That was a random video from his martial arts class. The solid-color mats on floor and wall are pretty good for greenscreen-like effect.

I saw the way it ran, and just instantly flashed on Sean Lennon, so I figured it would be a good conversation starter.

Yeah, I kind of figured that after a few scenes.

I just 'greened' an entire wall in my living room. I went to the Salvation army and bought the ugliest sport coat, shirt and tie that I could find. I'm waiting for a friend to go to a theatrical prop and costume shop in Philly to find me the world's worst wig.

I have this character envisioned that I want to do some fun sales videos with. Just some in-house stuff as I highly doubt that there is any commercial value in my tomfoolery.

Seeing this has motivated me to get off my dead butt and shoot some video. We all need a little fun in our lives, especially if we work seven days a week.

It looks like you had some fun. Nice job.

          Cheers. - Frank

It is an interesting thought. I actually have ideas for music videos popping up in my head quite often and it would be a blast to enact them.

Yeah, I know -- it was very limited. I just used what I had for a test run, but my son was greatly amused by it (if not exactly impressed). I'll try to capture more scenes with him doing more interesting movements in the gym. There are only a couple of spots at that gym that meet the criteria for it and it has to be done when others don't enter the shot. A little bit tricky to capture it without fumbling the camera.

I'm happy to learn that it's had a positive effect like that. If that project has been percolating in your mind, with a character already developed in your vision of it (character is everything), you'll have a great time making it happen. With the green screen and all that in place, you're set. I have to get more serious about it myself with a real green-screen set-up -- you and Michael Mayo are having that effect on me now.

Thanks. I did have fun, though it didn't take up much time or effort at all. About the same amount of time it takes to finish a cup of coffee. It was off the wall, really just to take some apps I have for a spin. It has set off my imagination off for other projects. I want to take it more places.

While not a direct rip-off, the character's genesis is rooted in Johnny Carson's, 'Art Fern.' Let's just call it an an 'homage'.

I'm glad that it's a two way street. It should be a great way for you and your boy to have a lot of fun.

Bought a 10x20 green screen and the frame to hold it with 4 lights and tripod stands, software, back light and also the camera for one of my grand daughters a couple of years a go while she was creating videos on YT. Every time we think we have a chance to use it something more important comes up and stops us. Next weekend We Are Going to Make a Video using this stuff before it dry rots...lol Thanks for the reminder!

There's not much to it. Video subjects that don't have green on them while they're in front of the screen screen. Make sure that your shots don't go beyond the screenscreen. Then with whatever software you use, import the video and also the background video or photo you want for the backdrop, then remove the green from the screenscreened video. After that, save in as a Wax file. When you feel it's ready, render it (that is, click on "render video") and it will generate a video for you.

There are videos on Youtube on how to do it. Here's a video I just found on how it's done with Wax 2:
