    • This photo is in Kansas from a few years back, just featured in by National Geographic in June 2009. For some really amazing pics check google images ( kansas tornado pics ). Just last year we had over 80 twisters in one night, interesting place to live.

  • Have a look at this video. From about 3.30 onwards you can see the top of the landspout and it looks very similar to that picture in that it appears to be coming from nowhere (although, obviously, it is! ):

    • OK, not photoshop. :-)

That looks like a fun job. I was kind of surprised he started running towards that thing though.

  • Most of the weird look is because the clouds it's originating from are white and the twister has sucked up all that dirt.

What I am looking at is the fact there's nowhere for the guys to go if it bounces. No ditches. At home we would watch from drainage ditches so we could get into one of ditches. Once you are under it you're pretty safe unless it drops something on you. There were driveways across drainage ditches in the fields where we used to skywatch so you could just get into the pipes under the road. I preferred those to in the house. A bit claustrophobic and never fancied the thought of having the house torn up over me but still had to settle for the basement a few times in a pinch.
