In 1984, New Zealand Prime Minister David Lange barred nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed ships from using New Zealand ports or entering New Zealand waters. Under the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act 1987, territorial sea, land and airspace of New Zealand became nuclear-free zones. This has since remained a part of New Zealand's foreign policy

It still has widespread support and is supported by all parties

I remember meeting some cool Kiwis when we ported in Bunbury, Australia in 1986. I was on a guided missile cruiser and I must say while the Kiwis I met were cool, the Aussies greeted us with open arms and took many of us in like family over the Christmas holidays.

I remember watching a debate on TV between Lange and a representative of the Reagan administration shortly after that was done.

Lange tore the US guy a new one.

He did not debate an official representative of the Reagan administration. Lange debated American TV evangelist Jerry Falwell (the Moral Majority dude and Liberty University founder) at the Oxford Union in 1985. Falwell was not a Reagan administration official.

Falwell, Lange debate nuclear-weapons morality. Their televised Oxford showdown further muddies an already murky issue - CSMonitor.com

FALWELL IN DEBATE ON NUCLEAR WEAPONS - NYTimes.com

An Oxford Union debate shown live on New Zealand television in March 1985 showcased Lange, a skilled orator, arguing for the proposition that "nuclear weapons are morally indefensible", in opposition to U.S. televangelist Jerry Falwell. (TVNZ has made available an audio of Lange's speech.) Lange regarded his appearance at the Oxford Union as the highest point of his career in politics.[11] His speech included his memorable statement "I can smell the uranium on it [your breath]...!"
