Do you spend more than $2.50 for morning coffee?

Until the anime convention, I never indulged in pricey coffee drinks.

$2.50 for a large Dunkin Donuts coffee and more than $3 for Starbucks - ridiculous!

And then at 6:30am that Saturday morning, I had to drive my kid back home from the Anime convention to take the SATs.

We stopped at Dunkin Donuts and as I had the mental alertness of a fossilized clam, I bought a coffee with extra creamer. 'Twas about $2.50.

Well, I will admit I was shocked at how *good* it was. I think it had to be because of the extra creamer.

So I visited McDonalds to see about recreating that (that costs only $1). It's *almost* as good but not quite. Good enough to buy from there, mind you, but until that experience... I never bought retail coffee drinks.

How 'bout you? What's your fav?

  • I've only had one good cup of coffee, I didn't know such a smooth taste and texture was possible.

That was years ago and I"ve never indulged myself since. Perhaps this weekend.

An anime convention? I'm glad my wife didn't know about it, or she would have wanted to go.

I watched one series before, and it was actually a very good story line. "The familiar of zero," I think it was called.

    All the best,
    Dave
  • It would've been easier to take the exam near the convention.

  • I don't spend very much on my morning coffee because I drink it at home. I'm a french roast drinker - and drink it strong. Sometimes if I feel like something a little special I put a little milk in it, but my machine took a dive (it makes whipped milk for lattes, which I love) so no latte for now. By latte, I mean the whipped milk and coffee - no sugar.

When I'm on the road traveling sometimes I treat myself to an expensive coffee, but usually I just drink it at home where it's cheap.

  • The cafe up the road, and believe me they're the cheaper ones here, sell coffee at £2.50, I just looked and that's approx. $4.25

    • Oh Barb,

      I loooove Dunkin Donuts coffee.

Medium, cream and sugar, about $1.90 here in West Palm Beach, Florida.

  • I'm like Sal, and would prefer to drink my coffee at home.

Also I live in what is probably the only country in the world where Starbucks has gone out of business. They started early this century in the usual fashion, ie flood every spare square inch of retail space with an outlet, but within a few years all the outlets were losing money hand over fist, so they packed up and left our shores.

Australia already had a fairly strong cafe culture before they arrived, probably due to the large number of European immigrants who live here, so they were pushing shit uphill to attract customers to their crappy, incredibly expensive offerings.

A similar thing happened to Krispy Kreme donuts. They lost money as well opening up Down Under. Which is hardly surprising. Their donuts were disgusting. About 99.9% sugar, if not more. Bleccchhh!!!!!

Americans are always welcome Down Under, however if your name is Starbucks or Krispy Kreme, then it's a case of "Yankee Go Home!!!"

  • You all are seriously deprived if Dunkin' Donuts coffee is actually better than what you're used to. Without the sugar and cream it tastes like the runoff from a potted plant.

Get yourself an electric water kettle ($10-20), a French press ($10), and some quality coffee beans, and you can make coffee at home that is cheaper and tastes better than anything that is handed to your from a drive-thru window.

That being said, I do buy coffee when I'm out, but just because I like to work in coffee shops and I don't like making my usual (double shot of espresso) at home.

    • I don't think it's so much "better" as it is convenient. When I stopped using sugar years ago I started "tasting" coffee and became very particular when buying coffee out. But when I need a shot, I will buy either DD or SB.
  • Keurig at home and at the office. Better selection than any coffee shop, under $1 per cup, and available on demand. Why go out?

I have spent $7.00 on a cup of coffee (very large cup). I like exotic blends that coffee houses and Starbucks have. I've spent $15/lb to buy a pound of coffee from them. I've always considered it money well spent. I don't do it regularly, but don't feel guilty when I do.

In between real jobs once I worked at a Starbucks. They keep track of the dollar amount that employees drink, and you are allowed to drink all you want. My tab came to $500/mnth.

  • Dunkin Donuts is the best I've found in the US.

In Canada it was Tim Horton's.

I usually drink coffee at home, though. When I go out, it's for a full breakfast meal, and Dunkin now has these awesome croissant breakfast sandwiches that, unlike Micky D's, are NOT dripping with disgusting grease...and are actually quite tasty.

Breakfast is my favorite meal and the one I know how to cook best, but sometimes I just don't want that hassle.
  • Actually, growing up in the "diner" capitol of the US (NY, NJ) I have always loved diner coffee. Whether it's 7 am, 6 pm or midnight it's always fresh - and cheap.

Ron - I enjoy Keurig on occasion but you pay too much for at home coffee. Typically in my house, since there are 4 regular coffee drinkers, we usually buy a large container of Folgers (the only one all 4 of us can tolerate). I calculated that to be about 4 cents per cup.

I also like Peet's, and 8 O'Clock Colombian (whole bean - I grind at home).
  • I don't usually drink coffee away from the house. Mainly because I've never found a place that makes hazelnut coffee the way I like it.

  • I only drink this:

Cutting the Crap on the World's Most Expensive Coffee | Tony Wild

    -------------------

Just kidding. Have not even tried it and it would not be on my bucket list if I had one.

McDonald's coffee is pretty good for on the road (my body can't handle their
burgers anymore). They upgraded to McCafe to get Starbuck's customers
at the lower price. (Tip though - McDonald's food does taste much better
when it is fresh cooked. Worth the wait if you have time. They should do it
upon request. I worked at one between real jobs.)

I pretty much drink regular brewed at home. Sometimes French Press
(I carried one when I was a courier. Got tired of gas station coffee. Still
use it on road trips in case "good enough" is not available.)

My favorite is Sumatra. WalMart sells it for about $5.00 for a twelve ounce
bag of ground or unground beans.

I have not tried Dunkin Donuts coffee yet. Probably will now, next time I get to
a grocery store that sells the beans as there is not a Dunkin Donuts anywhere nearby.

    ----------------

I don't think Krispy Kremes are any better than any other donut. Certainly don't understand
why the Grand Opening of their first store in Colorado caused massive traffic jams on the
highway and some car accidents. Some people.

    Dan

PS - We serve Folgers at my hotel. I've since discovered that Folgers is in the cans of the
house brand for WalMart, Target, Safeway, and King Soopers (probably all City Market/Kroger).
Including regular blend, French Roast and Columbian.

Sumatra .... yummmm. One of my favorites also. That, along with a Krispy Kreme is heaven. We had a KK store fairly close to here and it shut down. I don't eat donuts much, but I would never pass up a KK, made fresh from that store. Used to watch them come off the conveyor belt into a box for me to take home. Fresh.

  • 99.6% of the time I drink my coffee black.
Vanilla cream if I'm at a diner.
And sometimes my "blue collar Maple Machiatto" (Starbucks
does it around Christmas time.) My version is just milk, or
half and half, and maple syrup.
  • I spend about $5 or less. It's either a choice between coffee, or hot chocolate. Both are delicious in the morning

  • Anyone ever do a Cold Brew setup? I've been thinking about building one like the one from Breaking Bad.
    • [1] reply
    • We have a place here that sales the cold pressed coffee it is good and strong. When I drink it at home I like to grind the beans fresh and use a French Press.
  • If I get a cold brew it will look like this:

  • Tim Horton's Canada's best coffee a large $1.60
  • I think Starbucks is becoming overrated these days. I prefer to brew my own coffee. It's cheaper and just like I want it to be done. Probably spending around $2 a day, and pretty much all the coffee I want.

  • I went to Korea for vacation just a couple weeks ago, just some plain black coffee there was $4-5 in general, I was so shocked. Starbucks there costs almost $6
