Windows 7 vs Windows 8?

I have Windows 7 on my laptop and Windows 8 on my desktop, no issues going from one or the other. I use Windows 8 almost exclusively with the desktop view and don't worry about the "Windows 8 menu.

Windows v8 looks like a version of v7 written to look/work like android, and it assumes a SMALL set of programs.

WHAT IS WITH people thinking that people buy a computer for a given reason? If you want a clock, GET A CLOCK!!!!!!!! It is cheaper, more reliable, lower power, and may be more usable! If you want a radio, GET A RADIO! SEE ABOVE! You want a TV? Get a TV! SEE ABOVE! People DON'T buy computers to do a given thing. They buy them to use computers, and do MANY things! So STOP assuming that a multiterabyte, multiuser, multigenerational, multipurpose tool is only going to have a couple dozen uses.

I have HEARD that the next version, after 8.1, will DO AWAY with the garbage screen for laptops and PCs. It will keep it for tablets and smaller systems where it makes more sense.

BTW get the classic shell at sf.net. Classic Shell | Free software downloads at SourceForge.net It will bring back maybe 80% of the usability and UI of v7.

What do they plan to do for people trapped with Windows 8 on their computers? Yes, I have it, gotten used to it but still find it annoying. Will there a PC upgrade to make it like Windows 7 without that tedious screen takeover of Windows 8? It is silly to have to install 3rd party programs to make the interface for an operating system behave as it should have in the first face.

They will likely have an upgrade like they usually do. You likely will have to pay for it.

As I've said before Windows OS's alternate between crappy and good.

Windows 3.1 - good (the first Windows I used)
Windows 95 - crap
Windows 98 - good
Windows ME - crap
Windows XP - good
Windows Vista - crap
Windows 7 - good
Windows 8 - crap (from what I hear - I'm still using 7)

WOW! You are more gracious than I! Here is MY assesment!

Windows 3.0 DECENT compared to the competition.
Windows 3.1 - WELL, at least 3rd party fonts work better.
Windows 95 - BETTER, but still bad!
Windows 98 - BETTER, but still bad!
Windows 2000 - BETTER, but still bad!
Windows ME - OK, WHY did anyone let them put this out? They should have been SUED! This was obsolete before they even thought about creating it, and was created to get a market they planned to ABANDON!!!!!!
Windows XP - BETTER, but still bad!
Windows Vista - PIECE OF UTTER GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!
Windows 7 - JURY STILL OUT!
Windows 8 - ANDROID is NOT a PC O/S, so STOP trying to emulate it!!!!!!!!!!

I use Windows 7 and 8 both. I like mostly Windows 7. It's good for me. It's older version and fetchers are perfect for me.

I don't understand these things. I like XP. I'm really sorry they've just stopped doing updates for it.

My local friendly PC store guy (whom I've known and trusted for several years, now) tells me I don't need to worry immediately about XP not being supported/updated, and that eventually I should probably switch to Windows 7, and to have absolutely nothing to do with Windows 8 at all.

TECHNICALLY your friend is right. UNTIL they recognize standards, additions must be made. Microsoft's mantra is to IGNORE standards and try to replace ALL with PROPRIETARY routines! Unless they have CONTROL on such additions, and make them REVERSIBLE, viruses will be easy to attach covertly. Microsoft has NO real control on such additions, and they aren't necessarily reversible. So viruses have been, and will continue to be an issue.

All that means you need scanners(AKA antivirus programs) to look for fingerprints to find potential viruses and try to remove or mitigate the infection. THIS is the REAL concern. EVENTUALLY, companies will support the current systems in a way that makes the older systems harder to support. When THAT happens, you will want to be on a newer system. That could take weaks or years to happen, but it probably will happen.

And v8 and 8.1 have some real BAD issues, as far as I am concerned. Microsoft knows that now, and has said they will fix it in the next version. STILL, they seem to think it is due solely to the lack of a touch screen. It ISN'T! So I wonder what will REALLY happen.

HEY, I was merely agreeing with the guy and giving an explanation why. M/S EOL of XP is merely the first shoe to drop, so to speak. I interviewed for a job once and was SHOCKED to find they were STILL using WIN 3.1, for some areas! It was ANCIENT at the time. They were still using it because some code they needed was not available on the newer platforms, and it was so ancient that the newer platforms didn't support it.

WOW! I forget, does windows 7 even support touchscreen by default? Windows 8.1, although it supports touchscreens everywhere, was SPECIFICALLY created for tablets and laptops with touchscreens. Microsoft claims they thought that that would be STANDARD by now. The have a 34 year history of always getting it wrong, but I guess they figured this was their moment!

It is MY contention that the lack of a touchscreen is not the main reason for the extreme dislike of win 8.1. Since perhaps 99% of all tablets made in the past 5+ years have touchscreens, I guess YOU agree!

I love Windows 7

As for Windows 8, I didn't like it from the first sight. It was messy, I didn't like the "Metro" interface and haven't found any benefits comparing to Windows 7

hi, i also prefer windows 7 too - I have win 7 on one computer and windows 8 on a laptop. you can download free plugins or themes to make windows 8 work very similar to windows 7 without compromising too much. hope that helps

ACTUALLY, Windows 8 was an attempt to FORCE desktops to look like android. It does *****NOTHING***** to UNIFY ANYTHING! There is no application UI change, and you still can't run Android software. It MIGHT be nice for tablets, where you had few options, but I think I would STILL hate it.

And that support site definition of virus and trojan are TOTALLY WRONG!!!!!!!

A virus is a SPECIAL type of malware that, like a BIOLOGICAL virus does NOT exist on its own. It, INSTEAD, infects a program, like a BIOLOGICAL virus! So you download one infected copy, and it may infect many other files on your system. If you give one of those to another person, they will infect OTHER computers the same way. In this way, it is DIFFERENT from a trojan or worm. THAT is why it is called a virus.

A TROJAN is a file that may be EXACTLY what it claims to be. In fact, it usually IS! The CATCH is that it affects your system in a nefarious way that is intended but NOT advertised. The effect is generally tied to that program. It is NOT a virus or worm.

To hear THEM talk, any mislabeled program may be a trojan, and viruses have no infection capability, and ALWAYS use security holes. MOST viruses DON'T use security holes to get into your system. HECK, many of them are also INSTALLED!!!!!!! Say you install an INFECTED game on your system. BANG! YOU installed the virus! CONGRATS! You're infected!

The names are pretty logical. A virus infects and lives like a virus. A worm grows longer and longer and can multiply by splitting, like an earthworm. A trojan works like the old trojan horse. Did the people of Troy get a nice gift? YEP! Was it a horse? YEP! Did it live up to its name and praise? YEP! The CATCH was the army that was released by it being in the city. THAT was what wasn't advertised.

Windows 7 is an awesome OS with an easy to use user interface given that nothing radically changed going back to XP. Windows 8 is also a good OS...minus the UI. When you look at the features of the underlying OS, Windows 8 is pretty amazing. It loads fast, rarely if ever crashes, and the new file system does wonders to prevent data corruption. I was really hoping that when 8.1 came out they would have had an option to have a "classic" type mode which would look more like Windows 7...but sadly all they did was add a start button to bring us back to the stupid metro start screen.

As an IT professional, Windows 8 was a shame...but what really sucks is they did the same damn thing with Windows Server 2012...it was the stupidest thing Microsoft has done to date in my opinion.

Yeah, they keep trying to build towards their dream which is always a few years into the future and, performance wise, not that much better, if any at all. They have basically been shooting for FORM OVER FUNCTION! With VISTA, for example, they brought in the AERO windows, and it was a NIGHTMARE! Not only for the users, but for THEM! With 8, they brought in the "metro", and had it all over again.

HEY! MS! Here's a hint! FORGET FORM! You have that down! Time to deal with FUNCTION and SECURITY! You want a new system UI and make it for tablets? GREAT!!!! HAVE IT AS A CHANGEABLE OPTION! If you want to make it something jazzy that people will buy, try adding new built in functionality or functions. An O/S based zoom would be nice! Since the internet is SO popular, how about a nice outlook type interface, to go with explorer. You know, the kind of thing you USUALLY do with products like office. And this kind of stuff would ALSO be a hit with tablets!

I personally like Windows 7 myself. I have Windows 8 on my laptop and I can't say i'm a huge fan. I was just in the Windows store a few days ago, and with the new update there's supposed to be a huge upgrade with the funcionality. One of the guys working was showing me some of them on the Desktop and it does seem to be a lot better. I think windows 8 is more meant for touch-screen then anything. All there newer desktops and laptops are ALL touch screen. I just actually went forward with a purchase on one of their newer all-in-one desktops, so we'll see how long Windows 8 lasts before I convert back to Windows 7.

In my opinion, windows 8 is the better than window 7. It has so many great latest features and other functionality. Also, it has short boot time. It boot time takes few seconds which is a lot shorter than its previous version.
