Hey, some good news for a change.

The U.S. economy rebounded sharply in the second quarter as consumers stepped up spending and businesses restocked, putting it on course to close out the year on solid footing.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 4.0 percent annual rate after shrinking at a revised 2.1 percent pace in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said on Wednesday.

Its been a slow, tortuous recovery. Take a look at unemployment claims since 2009...

    And...

Look at how unemployment and deficits as a percentage of GDP seem to move in the same direction...

Here's a part of the report that may indicate things will continue to improve:

Despite the pick-up in consumer spending, Americans saved more in the second quarter. The saving rate increased to 5.3 percent from 4.9 percent in the first quarter as incomes rose, which bodes well for future spending.

    LOL. Yeah, sure.

I guess some people believe whatever propaganda the government throws out there. You actually believe that GDP went from -2.9% last quarter to 4% this quarter? Geez...

If you measured GDP the way it was measured 50 years ago, it would likely be -10%. Unemployment if measured using same metrics as under Reagan/Carter would be 20%+. You really think inflation is under 2%? Been to the grocery store lately?

    http://www.shadowstats.com/

The Chinese, who are masters at doctoring their own data, laugh at the GDP statements out of the US. Most experts with 1/2 a brain and who haven't sold their souls to the globalists...estimate US GDP in reality is about 50% of what is claimed. All the fluff is nothing more than paper pushing, deceptive inflation numbers, high frequency trading, and all sorts of nonsense...not the manufacturing/producing of REAL goods/commodities...which is the only thing that will make a strong and healthy economy.

You may want to start getting a little more information from Zerohedge instead of CNBC or one of the other propaganda mouthpieces.

Here, Mannarino can explain it to you...

Although the entire premise of the thread is political ranting bait. It did take 5 posts before it got started. That's better than normal.

Really Claude? Posting good economic news is now a political rant bait? Now THAT's funny.

ps. I know what would make this more interesting. Claude can turn this thread into another back and forth between him and Riffle about each wearing dresses and being gay. That's always hilarious. Well, the first dozen times or so. :/

Tim; You know exactly what I mean. This will be another battle of links and graphs.

And it will get shut down, just like all the others.

Of course, the news is great. What I mean is the fact that you knew when you posted it, that it wasn't going to go smoothly.

I also knew it, as did all the regulars, that you didn't post it as Rant Bait, but that's what it turns into, as all economic news ends up.

Personally, I was glad for the news, and agree with most of what you say. But you knew what was going to happen when you posted it. You're too smart not to.

No matter your intentions, you throw blood in the water, you get sharks. You've already seen a few bites already.

PS; I have nothing against your posts. You're one of the brighter people here, regardless of politics. But any post remotely about government or the economy, is instantly hit upon by some of the more...um...colorful among us.

It doesn't matter if your post makes perfect sense or not. Poo draws flies, but so does a fresh apple pie. It's that the topic you are posting on, draws flies....guaranteed.

You took my post the wrong way.

I read Tim's first post and liked it.
I know I've gotten into discussions on the GDP before, but it really doesn't interest me that much.

Claude, it's just about the cleverest and wittiest comeback I've read in a while, so of course he meant it - even if only subconsciously. That's often how comedy genius works.

I know that there is a compliment in there. Thank you. But the sad thing is, Yes, I'm always aware of the humor in what I say. It really doesn't come naturally to me. I think it does with Riffle, you, Kurt, and Ianfear63..
What's impressive to me, is when I post something, and I can't see a great retort to it, and Riffle pulls one out. Or when Ianfear63 takes a non-humorous post, and just says the funniest thing in response.

When I see funny and brilliant together, it's like poetry.

And Frank; The first part of my post was mostly to set up the second part....a sexual insult to Riffle.

Normally, I don't discuss my genius, but I feel this is a teachable moment. Maybe Claude can learn something.

I flirted with the idea of italicising "drag," but felt it made the joke too on-the-nose. I felt that just going straight forward created nuance and subtlety, like leaving a small, wrapped present in plain site, just waiting for someone to unwrap it.

                          Thanks for that.

                          I'm tired.

My sister is very ill and it's looking like she's not long for this earth. I just buried my mom a few months ago, my dad a couple of years before that, and I'm not looking forward to losing someone else.

My two boys (19 & 22) and I just moved to a new house. I didn't realize how much junk one could accumulate in 15+ years. The downsizing, while welcome to some degree, is taking some getting used to.

These discussions can be entertaining at times, but really go nowhere. Anyone who actually trusts government-supplied numbers needs their head examined. That's not a partisan, party-of-the-moment stab, either. Both parties do it. If a number doesn't match their agenda, they change the way the numbers are figured.

It pretty much all comes down to this: big-government types want to take more of private citizens' money and freedoms to facilitate their social goals; small-government types want the opposite.

Government numbers are all massaged to attempt to make the unwitting public think that the big-spending programs are doing what they were advertised to do. Recession? Spend us into debt. Recovery? Spend us into debt because the recovery isn't fast enough. Boom times? Spend us into debt because now we can afford it.

The flood of illegal aliens flowing across our southern "border" is threatening the fundamental fabric of the country. TSA will butt-search you at an airport if you're a US citizen, but if you're hispanic you get the red carpet with no suspicion at all. MS-13? No problemo, come on in.

Big-government types see the illegal flood as a way increase to their voter base, a means of guaranteed votes for their agenda. Who on the receiving end would ever vote to turn it off, or vote for a politician who wants to turn it off?

I've had enough of it, but there's nothing I can do about it but stand up and say, "NO" when I get told I have to participate.

Sorry to hear that Steve. Although we tend to disagree slightly on a few topics it's never anything personal and I actually enjoy our debates.

I appreciate the sentiments, it truly isn't an easy time.

I also enjoy our debates for the most part. There are a couple of nasty people (on both sides of the aisle) that seem to regularly poison interesting discussions and get them closed - mostly before I've managed to have the last word - but some of the threads have caused me to examine my thinking a little closer.

At the moment I'm having fun on Youtube "discussing" Neil Tyson's asinine comment on gmo's. The man may be an authority on Astrophysics, but he's clueless about gmo's and it seems plant breeding and genetics.

They are hysterical. Here's just three of the statements I've gotten from the pro-gmo bunch.
"GMO's have nothing to do with gmo monoculture farming."
"Round-up has nothing to do with round-up ready gmo's."
                            And my personal favorite.
"Inert ingredients in a herbicide don't do anything, that's why they are inert."
That was in response to a study I linked to that shows polyethoxylated tallowamine, or POEA, which is a surfactant in round-up but is listed as an inert ingredient by Monsanto, could be inducing Apoptosis and Necrosis in Human Umbilical, Embryonic, and Placental Cells.

Added later; Actually Joe, we do tend to derail threads. I have to keep in mind that there are people who actually care about these subjects. And my joking can be irritating. On the other hand, we all tolerate incredibly stupid posts....and mean posts. (I don't necessarily mean from you). Although some discusions get heated, and I admit I'm one of those who sometimes get a little bit emotional about issues, for the most part, the debate is enjoyable. I've told all three of those I mentioned that I appreciate the debate in the past.

        LOL...too funny.

I should also point out that a law was quietly passed in 2012 that allows the US government to use propaganda against it's own people. Previously, the government could only use propaganda outside of the US, per Smith Mundt of 1948.

Chew on that when you try to decide what is real and what isn't...

Even on MSNBC - economists said they expect significant revision of the numbers. The GDP does not fit (ratio) with the employment stats so THEY said it remains to be seen if GDP will be adjusted down or job numbers adjusted up.

I'm happy to see the downward trend did not continue but I don't think it's party time or there's any point in arguing results.

It looked good before the last Presidential elections to only be proven not to be afterwards. With the November elections coming I have my doubts that it went from -2.9 to what they are reporting now in one quarter. Other data is not supporting it.

I do business in an industry that's key to growth and I speak to people all over the country every week. First of all, this winter was awful! The polar vortex storms that hit the upper midwest and northeast brought most companies in my niche to a crawl. However, most did have work to do, they just couldn't get out and do it. Many of these areas are still very slow.

Most businesses in the south and midwest are VERY busy right now. However, I am seeing a pattern of bigger companies swallowing up the little guys. I've had three customers recently shut down and take jobs at bigger companies. This is concerning, because if that trend continues the bigger companies will have very little competition for larger projects. That's going to leave smaller companies picking up the scraps, which is already starting to happen.

I had one of my suppliers tell me that their warehouse guys have been so busy they've been begging people to work overtime. Still, that's not unusual this time of year. Most suppliers, including me, want to stock up and be ready for higher demand in the summer/fall seasons.

That being said, if things don't pick up in the northeast, or if things begin to slow down in the midwest or the south, especially the south, before winter, then I can foresee real problems in the future.

I'm already working side projects outside of my industry to bring in additional income streams so I'll be prepared for any downturn, just in case.

              Claude,

You overly emotional divas are hilarious to watch. Phelan gets his feelings hurt because you tell him he shouldn't have posted. He then sent you back a scathing reply which basically said your 7th and 8th grade immature humor has gotten old (he does have a point Claude). It obviously concerned you as you then had to write him out a long reply...stroking his ego along the way and telling him how smart he is and that you agree with his post.

After your heart rate goes back to normal (from your panic and fear that Phelan took your comment the wrong way) you go on to say that not everyone "understands what is being said" (which is obviously you and Phelan who can't understand what each other is saying).

Your emotional roller coaster doesn't end there though...you go on a rant at Maschke for a perceived insult, which you later had to go back and apologize for. You were even going to hit him with the ultimate death penalty...he was going on your ignore list. My god man, have you no compassion? How would Maschke ever survive?

Is that how important you think you are Claude? You truly are a legend in your own mind.

After your heart rate goes back to normal (from your panic and fear that Phelan took your comment the wrong way) you go on to say that not everyone "understands what is being said" (which is obviously you and Phelan who can't understand what each other is saying).

It's old news that the government recently has changed their GDP computing methodology (that and they also have no problem with using outright fraud).

It's the equivalent of moving the fence in baseball to right behind the shortstop and saying, "Home runs are way up this year!"

If you or I ran our business like this, we'd all be in prison.

Yeah, old news about something that happened recently? Here was my point for this thread post: The 1st qtr GDP was a negative 2.1% ( revised from -2.9%.) This quarter was significantly better. Are you suggesting the methodology changed between the 1st and 2nd quarter? I haven't seen anything about that.

The clueless Pura Vida posts a video by Peter Schiff that Vida suggests explains the big difference in the GDP from the 1st qtr to the 2nd. That's ridiculous. That video was from over a year ago. The same methodology was used in both quarters. The methodology of determining the GDP is likely flawed and has been changed several times in the past, but saying that doesn't really add anything meaningful to the op about the change from the 1st to 2nd quarter.

I suggest you both read what Joe Stewart posted. From what I know Joe isn't a liberal or Obama fan, so what he says comes across as an unbiased educated well reasoned response to my post. To me it is the best post in this thread by far and a much better one than the crap about propoganda and changing of the methodologies of the determining the GDP.

      From Joe:

Thanks, Tim. I just shared what I've seen and heard. In all reality, I'm not 100% sold on everyone in the south being super busy either. Many companies are involved in services that are based around the oil fields and not all companies are set up for that.

Also, as busy as some of my customers have been in the south, I also know that some of these guys aren't afraid to drive 100-150 miles to work every day. They just do the math and make sure it's worth it. If so, they go.

I just know that the market now doesn't even closely resemble what it was in 2002. I've seen several major manufacturers AND long time competitors be bought out in the last decade. Some more than once.

Regarding my political affiliation, I don't have a solid affiliation with any party anymore. I used to lean hard one way, then I switched the other way, but now I'm neutral. All I want now is the best person for the job. I want 100% honesty and transparency.

Major changes must be made if this country is ever going to resemble the America of old and many of those changes are going to be painful across the board. However, if our leaders are honest about why certain things must be done, explain the alternatives and show that they're willing to make significant sacrifices of their own so that we may all reach an end goal that will make us better as a nation, it will ease the pain of sacrifice and they'll gain the trust and respect of our citizens by being willing to make sacrifices just like everyone else.

"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country". It starts at the top.

That being said, I am an "Independent Republocrat". I'm voting for "None of the Above", "Just Do it" and "Do the Right Thing".

Thank you very much and goodnight. :-)

        Tim,

Do you just make things up as you go? I simply posted the Schiff video to show the computation of GDP has changed.

Do I think the change from -2.1 to 4% was because of this? No, I think it's all fraud. Real numbers are DRAMATICALLY worse. Government statistics are nothing but propaganda. They are trying to create a "Goldilocks" environment that isn't too hot or too cold. They are trying to make the debt ratio look smaller than it is.

Again, go to Shadow Government Statistics - Home Page for more accurate figures. Even if you think those figures are too aggressive, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

What's amazing is that someone like myself or Peter Schiff are called "crazy", "clueless", or "tin foil" for not believing the government propaganda....even though the government is caught in lie after lie, day after day, week after week. Have you ever seen so many scandals in the last few years? IRS, NSA...where do they end?

If you keep coming home from work and find your wife sleeping with another man, at what point will you no longer trust your wife? Why should you ever believe anything she tells you again?

Instead of anecdotal evidence from one person's experience...how about we look at the number of people right now on food stamps...over 50 million...

Why are 47 million Americans on food stamps? It’s the recession

There were twenty some million in 2008.

Instead of looking at the bogus 6% unemployment rate, how about instead we look at the labor participation rate.

        Bureau of Labor Statistics Data

Now, how can the unemployment rate over the past 5+ years be improving while the labor participation rate is steadily declining? It's because the government plays this game with the numbers where they no longer count you as being unemployed after a certain amount of time. It's like you've magically found a job! Except, you didn't.

The U.S. Labor Force Participation Rate Is At A 35 Year Low

Back to your "tin foil" and "clueless" comments...funny, Peter Schiff was being called the same thing on CNBC and other networks in 2007 and 2008. He was telling everyone a crash was coming, and they were calling him every name in the book...

Lots more videos on Youtube, just type "Peter Schiff was right".

Schiff is now predicting the mother of all collapses is heading our way.

That's all fine but that is another subject as I said. Perhaps you can start a thread about how the GDP methodology isn't an accurate indicator and changes were made to the methodology to make the debt ratio look better, if that is your opinion.

Have you ever seen so many scandals in the last few years? IRS, NSA...where do they end?
Yes, I have. That's another thread also.

I'm not arguing that the job market is great or has been improving that much in the past few years. It's been a very slow recovery. I think most people agree on that. Sure, the official unemployment rate has gone down in large part because people have dropped out of the labor force. That's pretty common knowledge for anyone really interested in this issue. Just like in the last month when over 200,000 jobs were added, but the unemployment rate went up because more people reentered the labor force by actively looking for jobs. Is this propoganda? You can call it that but like I said most people who follow this stuff are aware of these things.

Lots more videos on Youtube, just type "Peter Schiff was right".

Yeah, and do a google search of "Peter Schiff wrong" and you get quite a bit of articles about that also. He's been predicting hyperinflation for years. He does have some credibility though whereas after you posted that Mannarino you lost credibility with me. That guy is a joke. :/

            Tim,

Any negative comments on Schiff would be "Well, the dollar hasn't collapsed YET".

Nobody can predict the exact time that the rest of the world will no longer accept the dollar, but that day is accelerating. The BRICS now have their own version of the IMF and World Bank. They are all agreeing to conduct trade in their own currencies. The Petrodollar has never been in such jeopardy.

Schiff also has no way of predicting the measures that the US will go to in order to keep the system going. For instance..."The Belgium Bulge". In the past, the Chinese, Russians, and many other countries have bought US debt. Now, they realize it's toxic. They are unloading instead of buying.

So, what is happening? Well, the past several months, a "mysterious buyer" has shown up under the Belgium label and buying tens of billions of US debt. Nevermind this tiny nation is buying more of our debt than they have GDP.

            http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-0...er-whopping-40

Now, the "tin foil hat conspiracy nutjobs" would say that the Fed is secretly funneling money through the dollar swap system to the ECB and they are secretly buying as "Belgium"...or some similar scheme. It's either something similar to that, or Belgium either...

            a) Suddenly found some massive amounts of gold left over from WW2.

            b) Suddenly found a rich uncle.

To hold Schiff to a date on a potential dollar collapse...it's kind of unfair to ask considering the shenannigans going on. He's not Nostradamus.

As far as Greg...LOL. You're entitled to your opinion. I wasn't too impressed with that Reuter's link you provided

How about we agree to disagree and move on?
