Guitar Loop Sampler

I've seen musicians create samples and then mix them to build instant backing tracks--like this:

But this is the first time I've seen a person loop samples right from a guitar. Is this fairly common among guitarists?

If I remember correctly I've seen Jack White use one occasionally as well. Check out this one man band cover of The White Stripes (Jack White) song Seven Nation Army. Dude is making pretty good use of the "live" loop.

Thanks, I'm surprised I've never seen it before. I had to investigate how it works (not a guitarist, just fascinated). It's pretty cool:
