I'm Well Off But I'm Still Cheap

I thought a recent post by a well known local celebrity would make an interesting thread on it's own!

So there you are taking home $500.00 a week in an average job, counting the pennies etc. All the time studying and learning IM. Suddenly, a breakthrough, you just get it, several methods of applying what you have learned starts bringing home the bacon, big time, say 20k per month or a lot more, consistently.

A new car and home are going to become a reality plus all the gadgets you could dream of.

But old habits die hard, you still count your pennies on restaurant bills, your still not going to expensive ones much, you are not prepared to spend that amount of money on that.

So how many of you adjust in that way, do you, does it take a long time for you to not worry about the expense of the restaurant, the, bill, still doing your own washing, cleaning the house or cutting the lawn.

Does that mentality go quickly, go over time or stay indefinitely.

Your thoughts....

      I'm not absolutely sure. But I make a good living, and I would never;

Pay $50,000 for a new car.
      Pay $50 for a meal.
Pay $300 for a hotel room (Although I've stayed in a few)
      Buy a vacation home.
      Buy a motorcycle or boat.

The exceptions are education and a home. Although I can't imagine moving again, if my wife wanted to, I would. And I would go along with just about any choice of home (We have a very nice one now).

My wife still clips coupons, .....but we mostly shop at better stores, and will pay more for quality.

There is a huge difference between the buying habits of a wealthy person...and the people who sell to them. We have two PT Cruisers. We'll trade one in soon...
But I would never buy a car we couldn't pay cash for. And even if I had the money in my pocket, I'd never pay $50,000 for a car.

      I sell Koolaid...I don't drink the Koolaid.

        Ooooh ...

I've actually done four of them.

But I rent out the vacation home, bought it for cash right at the bottom the market (I hope!), so it was more an "investment", arguably. And the car was old, not new (and "ought to" hold its value, though I admit that's only a "justification", really, for a very extravagant buy ).

Where I live, never paying $50 for a meal would really be very restricting. That's only £29!

I was thinking about that part too.

In London you'd be lucky to go out for a meal and pay less than that for yourself.

But you are paying a fortune for ALL those things *****NOW*****! Don't believe me? In less than 20 years, at the current rate, a new car likely WILL cost $50,000. It will likely be smaller and not go as far. You will be PINING for cars like we have now. WHO KNOWS about the meal, but in some places with some people, $50 is CHEAP!

$300 for a hotel room? YEP! I know how you feel! ***I*** have HAD to do that. Try staying in a popular upscale area without a car at a VERY busy time. $300 can seem CHEAP!

Why won't you buy a motorcycle? They DO cost less than cars! And BOATS? I know a guy that consults only around the coastline! WHY? YEP! He SAILS there! He LIVES on the boat. They are NOT cheap! I KNOW, as I went out to some places my father went when HE was buying a boat. YOU KNOW, LARGE, with a cabin underneath that sleeps several people with a stove, sails, engines, etc... You are EASILY talking 6 figures, even for USED. We even saw one specially made for little people! On the outside it looked normal, but the cabin was short. IT was over $100,000. BTW this WAS over 20years ago, so it is likely more expensive now.

HOME? At 4% for the average home in LA, last I knew, you are talking $1000 just in INTEREST! GRANTED, it keeps falling, but it would take an average of 15 years to drop to like $500. So why don't you RENT? It sounds like it is right up your ally!

Guilty on all counts, apart from the boat; although I haven't owned a motorbike since I was in my teens.

As others have said, some of this is a factor of location. $50 isn't very much for a meal in London - and I'll eat out probably two or three times a week (excluding coffees and breakfasts).

These days I prefer spending money on experiences rather than acquiring more stuff. I've largely weaned myself off my gadget addiction, but I'll splash the cash on restaurants, theaters, sporting events, concerts and travel.

And I'm with Sal on the importance of fine food. I'll always pay for quality ingredients - it's one area in which I'd never compromise, even if it meant eating (and drinking ) less.

We'll buy groceries at an upscale store....my wife is very brand oriented. Nothing is generic. It's a trait I find amusing when we shop.

We tend to spend a lot on "permanent" things. Our home, handmade furniture....I'll pay a lot for a rare book. We've bought paintings in galleries. But we leave the gallery, and I'll bitch about the price of a meal. I'll buy a first edition book for $300, and then complain about the shipping being $25.

My wife and I are very internal people. And we are winding down. My retirement will be mostly writing and reading, and my wife will be gardening and reading.

If we won the lottery (which I've never played), we would spend money the same way.

I totally get that. In spite of what I said in my previous post, I'm really not that sociable. Although I go out pretty often, it's usually with one or more of the same small group of friends.

Other than that, I'm happy on my own, just reading and writing.

OK, $300 on a book that I assume you will likely not even READ! I dont believe I have EVER seen a book that has content valued at $300, and if it did, it could simply be replaced. They would want to insure the book and proper insurance means tracking, and I mean REAL tracking, so that adds quite a bit to the shipping cost, especially if it is relatively large and/or heavy. $25 isn't that much, and should be EXPECTED.

Steve; I wouldn't pay that much unless I was going to read the book. Books are real treasures to me. A lifetime of experience and learning can be found in the right books. Not all books can easily be replaced.

Insight means everything to me. To me, if you don't read continuously...about things that improve your understanding of the world...you have no advantage over the person who can't read.

Dan, they call it a first edition because you can't be expected to get all the colors right in one go.

And it isn't a coloring book, until I color in it. And I just sent for my $279 box of crayons.

I know that coloring book, it's a notorious, erotic one from the 1920's First edition copies in good condition are very rare. Most of them have their pages stuck together.

The coloring book had a series of drawing of big cats. It's worth a lot of money because the artist could color within the lions.

Exactly. If I have money for gas to get where I want to explore, I'm a happy camper. Of course, I'm also a foaming at the mouth rock and gem hunter, so I bring back valuable stuff with me all the time. It's about the only stuff outside of kitchen type stuff I really horde. I have 4 sets of dishes, pots, pans, gadgets, crystal, you name it........and thousands of dollars worth of rocks. The only thing that would make me happier is a small cabin in the wild somewhere. Almost did that. After losing my dog after 13 years and crying every day for over a year I decided that it was time to assuage my sadness by ordering that BMW Z4 that I have been lusting over for a decade or longer. Went to the dealer that has been emailing me enticements for almost that long and filled out the paperwork for a lease. I figured that I was making half the payment by no longer paying for dog food, treats and toys, pet insurance, vet visits, etc. I slid (squeezed) into the cockpit and was instantly transported to another world, sporting the face and body of someone else. It was so breathtaking that I almost got a woody (again - no damn room). I decided to sleep on it over night. Instead, the next morning I got up and drove to the local SPCA where I rescued a beautiful Pit Bull puppy named 'Honey.' She is the new joy of my life and I haven't regretted the decision for a single minute. That, said (sniff)

        Pay $50 for a meal.
For as often as I eat out, I don't give it a second thought and usually pay that for the accompanying bottle of wine. There are few pleasure in life that can top a truly excellent meal.
Pay $300 for a hotel room (Although I've stayed in a few)
I don't get out much, but can you say, 'Motel 6?'
        Buy a vacation home.
Well, I don't know if this qualifies but I did buy a 10-acre farm at the same time that I had the lake house. That should be illegal.
        Buy a motorcycle or boat.
Motorcycles have been a life-long passion, though a part of my past. I did purchase a Donzi Sweet 16 with a 327 Chevy to go along with the purchase of the lake house, but I ran out of lake before I ran out of boat. A few years of that was plenty. Never, again.

A boat is nothing more than a hole in the lake into which one pours money.

The only thing I spend money on know is audio/video gear and computers. Getting ready to upgrade my Mac Pro. The configuration I'm getting is $10K with the new 4K monitor.

Hey, I don't smoke, drink, gamble, do drugs or chase women. I'm entitled. Besides the last rig was $6K and has paid for itself, many times over. There are far worse things that a man can do with his money.

        Cheers. - Frank

Old habits die hard and that's GOOD! Well, anyway if you have good habits.

Habit of saving is not bad. Watch what happens if person lacks it and wins a lottery, for example.

They will spend that money in a noseblow.

If you don't feel like buying expensive stuff and don't really need to, then there is no point of doing it for the sake of buying.

I saw a brand new Jaguar today. It is very eye catching.
But I can't imagine spending money that way. It led to a
discussion with a customer of mine. We both admire
that Sam Walton and Warren Buffet lived/live modestly.

I will admit that if I am going out to eat, I just want to go
to the places I like that serves what I'm in the mood for at the
moment - usually in the $10 to $12 a plate range is all. My Mom
and brother would irritate me by taking 20 to 30 minutes
to go through a coupon book for a restaurant "deal" at some place
    I never heard of.

Speaking about expensive and cheap is not yet applicable to me because of what is I want both of them. But I want both... because anything depends how we like or want.

We are frugal here at our home and pretty much keeping those tactics. Why spend extra when it isn't necessary?

I've been well off and I've been barely hanging on - and the one thing that makes a difference ...........is food. I freaking love food -- and I love fine food.......and I am an outrageous cook (I've spoken to a few exes in the past and the one thing they always say is they miss one of my dishes. It's NOT flattering, LOL).

I will never want a huge home..........
I will never want any other type of vehicle than a jeep.
I don't buy a lot of bling (who'd put a bumper sticker on a Jag?).
Hotel? Maybe sometime. It won't be the Ritz.

But freezer? Organic sides of pork or beef? Farm fresh organic eggs - organic heirloom tomatoes - fresh scallops, crab, lobster.............. I don't think I need to go on. You "get" it.

Same for me - well, I do like buying some toys etc if I can afford it, but the main indicator of my current financial status is what kind of food I'm buying. Through rough times I mainly cut down on beef, which is very expensive in Sweden. It's hard to justify buying meat for $30 when you're scraping to get by so I'll just stick to cheaper food. When I'm well off, however, I make a nice steak about once a week or so.

Your "mindset" after getting $20k per month depends really on your current condition, if your current condition is: living in a 20 square meter house and spending $800- $1000 per month for all your expenses (eating as less as humanly possible), then getting $20k per month would really make a difference in your mindset and you will surely change your house and your habits and you will spend at least $4k - $5k per month. I believe that $20k per month from $2k per month would not make a big difference to a person that is frugal and is already having all his needs covered and some extra stuff (not including luxury stuff). Spending $20k per month is for someone that makes $100k per month or someone that has extremely rich parents, but for a person who has "spit blood" (as they say in my country) to get to $20k per month, it will be extremely hard buying a $800 suit every month or buying a brand new car, because he knows the real value of his money.

    Well, let's see...

My wife leases her cars - typically Honda Accords (she likes those). I drive a Hyundai. However, I would spend MORE on a car if it's one I really like. 50K ? probably not THAT much, but certainly more than I paid for my Hyundai. Also, I always buy used - like 2 year old cars. They're a bit cheaper

House - we bought ours this past December. But we got a great deal. The house was appraised at $365K. We paid almost $100K less (thanks mom and dad in law )

I wouldn't buy a vacation home. Largely because then we'd never go anywhere else. We like to go places.

I just bought a new motorcycle (my dream Harley). However, I have owned motorcycles for the better part of 30 years so this is not a new extravagance. This is my first HD though...

Never a boat. You know the 2 best days of a boat owners life, right?

Meals - as someone who has traveled for work for the past 20 years, eating out is something I do enjoy. Mostly I stick to the chains, like TGIF or Rubys, but once in a while I do enjoy the fine dining experience. So to say "never" is not an option

We did put in a pool this year - above ground. But hey - we have 3 years, no interest so we'll pay it off as an interest free loan

And finally, I do contribute to my SEP IRA and other savings. Something I was lacking for way too long.

So we probably do spend more, but not outrageously so. Why not? You can't take it with you
