Hope there are some computer experts out there that can help... I'm going crazy!
My computer has just started making these noises today. It sounds like an alert - beep,beep, beep. But it happens every, say 15 seconds to 3 or 4 minutes.

I rebooted, didn't help.

I only have chrome and pandora open (and some folders).
I looked at the task manager and can't see anything (but then I'm not that familiar with the programs listed there).

Any advice would be welcome since I'm ready to throw my laptop out the window!

  • Hard to say. Did you recently install a bunch of Microsoft "updates" per chance? I've seen plenty of unusual stuff following one of those.

    The universal fix all is to run a system restore. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System restore.

    It's worked for me many times. Good luck.

    • Yes, I did an update yesterday. I'll try a system restore in a little bit (right in the middle of some things right now).

      I reboot in normal mode and,yes, there's a definite pattern to the beeps. It does sound exactly like an alert - 3 fast beeps.

      I ran Malwarebytes, but I'll scan with Avast too.

      What I don't understand is what triggers them. I haven't heard them in about 15 minutes, but earlier they were coming up like every 15 seconds (that's when I was going nuts!!!)

    What happens when you reboot? Are you rebooting in "normal" mode? Ok, what I mean is when you reboot, does it reboot normally or does it go to a black screen with options (safe mode, normal mode and so on)?

    If your laptop is beeping, see if there is a pattern to the beeps. Is everything running ok after the beeps stop? Your post is kind of confusing, sorry.

    What Travlinguy said is your best first step! Do a system restore. If that doesn't cure it, let us know.

    Also, I'm assuming that you have run your AV and such? There are other AV that will work with your current one and they can pick up things that your AV might not.

      Did what you said and Chrome and the speakers were green. So I'm going to uninstall chrome and hopefully that will work.
      BTW, that's a neat trick - thanks.

      I tried to do a system restore and it failed (but it failed a couple of weeks ago when I tried also.

  • In the lower right corner of the screen, on the taskbar, click the speaker icon. Click the "mixer" link at the bottom of the volume slider that opens up. Next time you hear the beeping happening, go back to the mixer window and watch it. It has a separate volume slider for each running application, and the slider doubles as a volume visualization; it flashes green to show the current volume level of whatever sound that application is making. Which slider turns green tells you which application is making the beeps you're hearing.

  • Do you know the manufacturer of your BIOS? Is it Phoenix, Award, AMI, etc? I suspect you need to reseat the RAM. You can check the link below to see which of the beep codes corresponds to your computer's BIOS model. Let me know how it goes.
