If you had to choose between losing your:

a) Wallet, complete with all your credit cards, driver's licence, cash and everything else you carry in there

OR....

b) Your cell phone

Which would it be?

To me it's a no-brainer, take away my cell phone!

But I just read, according to one survey, that most college students would rather give up their wallet/purse.

I wonder if the results of this question would be equally split between those of a certain age group (like me) and under 25's

I'm under 25 and don't even have a phone (well I do, but I use my computer to communicate instead, and rarely touch my phone).

In saying that - take my wallet.

Well, I hypothesize that for today's generation (that includes me) that most wallets don't have that large amount or anything of "value" to be taken away. Meanwhile phones are containers of photos and text history that are vital to our social life. Contact numbers and whatnots. Like would you beg for a thug that he can steal their phone but give the sim card back?

      This is a good point.

I don't carry much in my wallet also if it's nicked I can use my cell phone to cancel the card before the thief can even figure out he can't use it. I rarely have much cash in there. I could also call the cops. I could even film him running way for the cops. My phone has, as Rick points out, photo's I want that haven't been downloaded, some sentimental.

The trouble is, the cell phone is much more than a phone now. If you'd asked me this several years ago when all I did on my phone was call, text or play that annoying snake game, I'd have said phone every time. Now I'm not so sure

Also and I know this is a hypothetical situation but if I was the thief, I'd take the wallet only, half those phones have 'find my Iphone' and other things that might track me down.

Well, some of these thieves are discriminatory too. If they find out you are using an old model phone, they snub it! Just hand me your wallet, they say! ahahaha

The main thing of importance in my wallet would be my photo IDs.
Think about the disruption to your life without them, and re-applying for a new licence, bank card etc.
Do you really care that much about photos that haven't been uploaded?

Aside from photos, text messages are of value too. In a sentimental way, that is. About the vital cards, id's and such... there is online way for that to do. Yes it's a hassle to recover and re-apply but the thought of losing memories outweighs all those stuff.

In a span of time, I have lost 2 phones so far, and it's emotionally scarring.

I don't care much about the thief using ID's on wallets that they'd use it for credit card fraud. They're just there for a quick buck. I would rather be scared of shady companies

It's a sign of the times but youngsters LIVE on their phones whereas us "oldsters" use them as tools - it's a different relationship entirely.

All the stuff on my windows phone is backed up to one drive automatically, it's insured via my bank account so take the phone any day - I'll have exactly the same up and running in one day.. That's nothing to me but to a sub 25 year old - "without my phone for a day? AAAAAARRRGGHHH!!"

The thing is, I don't carry around photo ID. I don't need to where I am. My wallet (and the my is the most important part of my point) has a credit card, a bank card and lots of receipts I'll eventually bin (Receipts, not the cards!)

My phone has pictures of a very recently deceased relative and the funeral I just went too.

You see, what a photo means to me may mean nothing to you. Like your ID cards mean nothing to me. It's not like we all see our wallets and phones in exactly the same way.

I lost my wallet years ago with precious photo's in it and all sorts of stuff I needed. I decided to make my wallet minimalist in case that happened again.

I agree many youngsters will go bonkers without a phone mainly because they're virtually addicted to them and feel they've lost a dog when they lose a phone. Re the photo's I don't use that cloud back up on mine and I rely on manually downloading those images and everything else.

In all honesty though, if they took the phone and the wallet, assuming I had the photo's backed up I just mentioned, I'd be happy to be forced apart from my phone for a period of time but pissed off I couldn't get any money out to get a beer afterwards. So assuming the phone was backed up pre robbery, I'd rather they took that. Right this second, they can have the wallet.

This thread has served as a timely reminder though to back up my phone. Thanks for that Peter.

I just got back from a cruise around the Pacific islands.
After a couple of days on board, I noticed something was different, but I couldn't quite figure out what it was.

Then I realised - people were talking to each other, looking at the ocean, lazing on sunloungers, and heaven forbid, actually READING BOOKS!

There was no phone coverage, no internet, no i-phones, tablets or laptops, no emails, no TV. It was absolutely marvellous! People got into the elevators and talked to each other, rather than taking the trip between floors in silence. We met several new friends in the elevator and joined them later, for dinner or drinks. We went to trivia nights (am I allowed to say that my team won, getting the most points over a six night cruise), we learned about salsa dancing, art appreciation, chinese cookery - all sorts of things.

I was completely out of touch with the world, at one with the ship and the ocean (and the food!)

So, my point is that there is a life without a cell phone, you really don't need it 24 hours a day.

But I did need my wallet, to buy the drinks!

So to me, wallet or cellphone? No contest!

I don't carry a wallet much anymore. My car reg. and ins. card are hidden in my car and the same goes for the cards hidden on my bike. I just keep a little money and license in my front pocket.
I don't have a smart phone and all that's on my phone is phone numbers. most I never call or hear from.
With that said I'd choose my wallet The only two reasons being that it is empty and it's getting harder to get a phone that isn't a smart phone.

    Peter,

I could replace my driver's license in about an hour. Take the most recent expired one into the nearest DMV office that issues photo IDs, give them a few bucks, and walk out with a new license. Easy.

No clue what it would be like in other areas, or if I didn't have the old one, but that's all I would need here.

Paul, why would you have an expired license? First of all, it's expired. Second, doesn't the DMV take it from you when you renew your license?

I've lost a wallet once. Like an idiot, I had my license and my social security card in it. I needed a social security card to get a new license and a license to get a new social security card. I was stuck in a cyclical governmental hell until SS relented and sent me a new card about a month later.

Your situation was worse than mine. Also pre-911, but I had a birth cert. SS wouldn't issue a new card, though, without another form of ID. I was 20 years old and didn't have crap. I signed an affidavit and they had to send it to Washington to get approval, rather than doing it locally. What a pain.

To make matters worse, I turned 21 before I received the new card, so I didn't have a license on my 21st birthday. Not that it made much of a difference with respect to my level of sobriety that evening.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

    Dan,

They punch a hole in the old one and give it back to you. It's valid for things like fishing and hunting, where you might need ID but don't want to carry your license in case you lose it.

So not all states are dumb. Here our fishing lic are just paper. In all actuality
      they are really just receipts.

Surprised the hell out of me the first time. New York, Ohio, and Indiana just took the old ones. (I wasn't in Florida, Iowa, or Illinois long enough to renew a license, so I'm not sure how they handle it.) The clerk in PA explained it the first time and it made so much sense I was surprised Indiana hadn't done the same thing.

It's not a substitute for a fishing license. Just useful as proof of identity for those situations. And most others in PA that don't involve driving. Like, for example, getting a new license issued. Which makes all the rest of this stuff much easier...

That makes some things a lot less of a problem. My grade school is now a police precinct, the hospital I was born in is now part of a college campus, and the high school I attended is... Hmmm. I don't know, but they closed a year after I graduated.

Getting old records from another state is a pain.

Colorado law requires that you have valid and current ID on you.

They also take expired licenses. And, you can't have a DL and a State ID
at the same time - so I don't know how it's supposed to work if you get your DL
suspended or revoked. Might be another pickle to get a State ID after you lose
    your license.

In Colorado, it would be the same mess as Dan and Ken described if you lost your ID and
Social Security card or birth certificate.

On a side note, when you register your vehicle in Colorado, the copy of the registration
meant for your vehicle no longer has your address on it. This is to prevent theft.

On a side, side note, Colorado rental cars have distinct (red) license plates. This was
started after Florida and other states switched back to regular looking plates for rental cars
because they made targets for thieves to go after the luggage and cash.

I'd much rather prefer to lose my cell phone for various reasons.

I don't have anything on my phone that would require me making a trip to a government facility to recover; what a pain!

The pass-code that I've set on my device also helps, as nobody would be able to access it anyway.

Applications like 'find my iphone' really do help when you lose yours, too!
