I don't do Facebook but I need to send a message to someone who has an active FB page. I don't want to do a friend request - want to send a message.

It gives options of paying $1 or not paying....important? Don't mind doing that but - if I send a message, is it made public or is it only seen by the person who has the FB page? I need to get a message to him but don't want to cause any embarrassment if the message is displayed for all to see.

I know - everyone does Facebook...but not me.

    Kay,

Couldn't you just send him a text message by phone. Quicker, cheaper, and more private. Just a thought.

Kay, Facebook messages are seen only by the recipient. You can send anyone a message as long as they allow it (users have the option to determine who is allowed to send them messages, such as "everyone" or "friends only"). I've never heard of having to pay $1... but I'm not a big Facebook user either.

I thought the $1 was something new - it says if you pay $1 it goes to his personal messages and if you don't it goes into the "general" folder. I don't even know what that is or if he will see it there. I'm the only person on the planet, I guess, that doesn't have an interest in Facebook.

This is a neighbor who is having some problems. I need to get a message to him but want to make it so he doesn't feel obligated to respond unless he wants to.

Thanks - I'll give it a shot in the morning.

That's just it - he's not here and hasn't been here for quite some time.

The option to pay has been available for a couple of years. I needed to contact someone earlier this year. I just sent the message (without paying) and got a welcomed response within the hour.

    Hi Kay!

There are two ways to send a PM in FB. One is the "message tab/button at the base of their timeline photo, the other is the message icon at the top right of the screen.

Which one are you trying to use? I tried to PM another account I have today that "I" am not a contact of and using the message button on the timeline photo, I was able to make it go through.

If there is no other option, can you just send a message saying that they need to "friend" you and you then can send a PM? You can always "unfriend" them later?

I sent it and it seemed to go through - the $1 stumped me as I didn't know if people who use Facebook actually check whatever that "general folder" is.

Oh well, I've done what I can for now so can only hope he gets the message.

      Thanks!

Kay, he may get an email notification that he has received a message.
