Domain Redirect for local business - good idea?

Hi everyone!
I'm re-building a site for a friend who has a local business. The domain he owns is currently established going 7 years now, however it does not have a keyword in it that we want to use.. he is trying to get into a new sector of business to go along with his current business. I want to register a couple domains with the target keyword. Is this a good idea or bad idea? I was thinking of just redirecting to the main site.
i.e. current: bobswindowcleaning.com
target keywords: repair , so: bobswindowrepair.com
(these are just examples, not the real site)
Thank you!!
Happy new year,
Christine

Well, I'm not really sure why you want to do this.

First off, make sure to continue using the aged domain.

Next... I'm going to address what I believe is the misinformation you picked up somewhere, maybe even here on keyword domains, 301 redirects and a bunch of other crap that people believe has some effect on SEO when it doesn't.

Everyone says keyword domains are easier to rank, exact match is the way to go, and so on and so forth. What they don't explain to you is that an existing website that has age to it, likely has better branding and you're also likely to mess that up if you create a satellite site the wrong way. I know you didn't say create an additional site, just forwarding the domains but I felt the need to clarify for the people just browsing and learning.

The redirects are useless. They aren't going to help at all. They may be useful in other forms of marketing though, if it is an easier domain name then it's for user experience and lead generation, not for rankings.

The very first thing you should do... is take the existing site, like the example you gave, http:// www.bobswindowcleaning.com. Instead of having an entirely new domain and new website if you went that far, it would make more sense to have http ://www.bobswindowcleaning.com/window-repair-cityand optimize the page accordingly.

This would be the way to do it, since the existing site already has age, and it is entirely relevant. Domain relevance, page relevance, all helping you out.

Save your money... just focus on the existing site.

I was wondering if you were still around! I haven't been over here in quite a while as I'm not doing websites much any more, I was actually hoping you would reply, thank you! and good advice, makes sense, I appreciate it.
Since it's been a while I really have to think about the best way to go about this and get this guys business in the search engines above his competition
      I appreciate any suggestions..
      Thanks!
