It's a numbers game just like any other form of marketing and advertising.

Computer section is a good one, creative isn't too bad.... the business for sale is a really good area... and don't forget the barter section, you can find some really interesting offers like I did (got a boat, a 5,000 dollar audio system, and some other cool things).

The approach, you just kind of have to test out for yourself. Make sure to do your research on ghosting, flagging, etc.

Resume section has worked well for me, plain text ad with no images...

It's vital that you do competitive analysis for any city you want to target. You can't treat Dayton, Ohio the same as NYC, LA or SF.

Navigate to your target section (Computer, Creative, etc). Type your relevant keywords into the top left search box which will reveal all your competitors. Click on a few of their ads to collect their phone numbers. You can then easily determine how often they post daily by entering the last 4 digits of their phone right back into the same search box.

Same as you would do with Google, collect some intel on your competitors to gauge how often you need to post.

      Hope that helps

Craigslist and Newbie should not be in the same sentence. You're going to find it tough going. You'll find it much easier using almost any other means of lead gen. A few ideas for you:

    - Facebook
    - Local Referrals
    - Local Newspapers
    - Direct Contact (email, snail, phone, personal)

      Tom,

Do you think local buy & sell FB groups work? Currently I'm in 15 local groups and wondering if it works to post a free website building offer in those groups...

Step 1) Post the free offer and find out yourself.
Step 2) There is no step two. Just don't ask the guy selling get rich quick methods.

you have to be methodical with CL. Take advantage of the renew function and make sure each ad looks unique. that will help with cl flagging.

I've been a professional poster for 6 years. If you are interested, I can probably save you a lot of headache. just PM me.

If anyone tells you in public, they're either spouting a load of tripe or they're telling you because the system no longer works.

Thanks Tom. That confirms what I was thinking -- there really are no "white hat" methods.

I got one lead once. Was a photographer who wanted re-designed his website, very easy job.

But I don't post there any more. But the services, web / info and marketing section is what worked for me.

Also searching for those posts looking for a web designer will give you some opportunities, but most of them are recruiting locally.

In general I woud not do multiple post, it requires a lot of money, money that you can use to make PPC campaigns that can be very profitable and neither I would waste money on third-party service providers.

I've had success in the bartering section which I've turned into paid jobs and just responding to ads. I haven't really tried posting my own ads since the one's I do see are for $100 complete websites.

Back when I posted on CL I would create one nice, simple graphic as a picture and post it in my ad. Professional, high conversions, and no text for the harvesters to spam my email.

Just use different ads that say the same thing. Use different Pics and the same pics but name them differently. Do around 6 ads in different towns and different sections. Renew every few days. It works.
Facebook ads are cheap and work too. You can really dial in Facebook ads to your end user so your ad spend is reasonable.
