I also suffer from social anxiety and am in sales and doing pretty well I always love hearing about people who suffer from social anxiety face their demons and win! And I also love learning from them are there any techniques you use to help you control your social anxiety?

A lot of social anxiety comes from not knowing what you are going to say when variables come in, or not feeling like you can say your lines confidently, even when you have rebuttals written in front of you..., but as you can see in the above video, once you have pitched a couple hundred or more people, you become familiar with common objections and your rebuttals. The more you say them, the BETTER you say them and the less cumbersome and more natural they feel.


It doesn't really matter where the conversation goes anymore at that point, you will be on top of it. It just takes busting through those first few hundred calls. Soon you will be confident in everything you say and that will come across too.


You don't have to be a social butterfly, you just have to get comfortable with the variables that come in on your own pitching. If you can handle just that pitch confidently, even though you could be a social clutz in all the rest of life, then social anxiety wont be an issue on your calls. That comes through the initial week of dialing.


I like the way , when the customer says he can get it for sixteen cents, Jake keeps him on the line by offhandedly saying, "Yeah, and Im trying to work out a better deal for you, but first..." and keeps him going. You have to keep them on the line long enough to sell them. Sometimes you cant give an immediate answer but will become comfortable with how to delay an answer until you have had a chance to sell them on the value. Customers often want to talk price before you have sold them on the value and that isn't fair to you...You will learn how to keep them on the line like that after a few hundred calls. That part is something that only dialing can really teach you thoroughly.


As for the OP: Just keep at it and you will do fine. place where people fall off is simply not keeping at it. Fortunately, I learned on a job that MADE me keep at it, or I might have fallen too, and would have went the rest of my life not knowing I could do it.



In short the successful sales person is just willing to go through a gauntlet that the failure was not willing to go through. Having a JOB doing it initially overode my "will" factor. If it was up to my will I wouldn't have broken through, but I had a boss MAKING me... That's the thing (WILL) that gets in the way the most in the beginning.

First you got him hooked and then once you started talking about websites, he blew you off, saying that they already have a website and threw the franchise excuse.

Now I understand that you are trying to sell SEO services, however this is really hard to achieve over the phone nowadays. Too many callers, similar script. This script is a few years old and has been spammed to death by almost all telemarketers on auto dial.

Trying to sell SEO by cold calling with no rapport established is a very long shot. 5 years ago, hell yeah. Not in 2015.


Stay away from established businesses with that SEO service and that outdated script. They are already spammed to death with almost any service you can ever think of

If you must use the script and cannot think of selling anything else other than SEO, then you have to change your main demographic.

They should be the new businesses opened in the past 30-90 days. The sooner, the better. Enthusiastic and not worn out business owners with money to spend on advertising. Not been spammed to death yet. Those are your golden nuggets. Those owners are willing to give everything a try to get their business names out there.

For established businesses, I'd recommend to offer something unique or different to hook them up and once you set your foot in the door, then you can solicit your other services including SEO.

As for the speech: You startle a lot. The person on the other end is having a hard time understanding you. Stop reading the script. Personalize it. Use it as a guideline, don't read it word by word. It sounds mechanical and boring at best.

One of the most important aspects of cold calling is your energy level. You don't sound enthusiastic at all, but you should. Your energy level should be a notch higher than the person you are calling. Just a notch, not more. You don't want to sound crazy. Just interesting enough to get the person's attention.

Also, you never mentioned the purpose of your call to us. That is very important. Are you trying to setup an appointment or are you trying to sell something on the phone? The success of this call depends on what you were trying to achieve.

The main reason why it failed was because the guy surprised you with his question. He threw you off by being straight to the point :" So, what can you do for us?" I don't think you were expecting this.and because you were reading the script word by word, you got lost and missed the possible deal once you started talking about websites.

Prepare yourself for extreme questions. Unexpected questions, smart questions, stupid questions etc. This way, you'll be ready when someone asks you a question which was supposed to be at the end of your conversation.

Taking the first step and actually going into action can sometimes be hard.


I know that you said you've had issues with anxiety. I'm not looking to promote any product but as someone who was on anxiety meds for 20 years and before that spent 2 years basically confined to my couch due to the severity of my condition, I found something that worked wonders for me. It's blue vervain extract. I just take 20 drops twice a day. Haven't really had any anxiety issues since starting taking it and wish I would have found it 20 years ago.


In relation to your calls, I would suggest working more on tonality. Simple tweaks can work wonders and multiple changes in tonality can have great impact. Find your perfect tone for various phrases or words. Like when you're asking if they have time to speak and is that fair enough - try more of a "reasonable man" questioning tone. Inject tones of confidence at appropriate moments along with longer pauses between key phrases.
