Remembering names

Back in the day our sales manager signed up our team to attend a memory seminar (I believe it was modeled after Harry Lorayne, but was not his system). It turned out to be surprisingly useful, but I let the skills slack over time.

Now I am starting a major marketing push for one of my companies, and want to sharpen up the ability to remember names.

Someone told me they saw Bob Burg (Endless Referrals, The Go-Giver) learn and remember over 250 names at a seminar, and then call them by name from the stage hours later. Has anyone used his techniques, or are there other systems you know of I should check out?

  • Bob Burg is also a speed reader. I think all memory experts use the same system. Create a strong emotional visual image that sounds like the person's name. And you remember the name.

    I am actually what they call a "super recognizer".....if I see a face I remember it, and yes I do remember names. Very good for sales, events and networking...super good

    A super recognizer - means that I can look at a baby or childhood picture and say "Theres Jennifer Anniston, there's Angelina, there's Jay Z and so forth"

    From what I understand it is not a measure of intelligence (waahhh) but rather a genetic thing....
    wired into you.

    There are online test you can take....I nailed them and was asked to do more LOL
    I first did a test at a local university - a friend suggested me for it as they know that I remember faces and names to the extreme...almost a party trick haha

    I scored 100 on one and 99 on the other (didn't know one of the celebs)

    average score is about 70 plus....below that ? mild "faceblind"


    some people are "faceblind" ...often from a stroke or an accident....there is a part of the brain that recognizes faces....very sad stories of moms who can't "see" their kid's face and so forth

    I have participated in a couple studies on this too due to my "skill" or "gift"
    It is just very simple for me
    One test is like.....you see two twins that everyone thinks are soooo identical....a super recognizer will immediately see the difference in their faces. Not something I try to see...it is just "plain as the nose on your face" to me

    • Interesting; I never forget a name ... or a conversation.

      But names ... ha, I am lucky when I remember my own.
  • I'm horrible remembering names. Faces, no problem.


    Though, when I meet people now I try to associate their names with something I can remember.


    Example: So, the most recent couple I met was Rick and Paula.


    Right away I thought of Rick Grimes (You know... from The Walking Dead... the greatest show ever) and Paula Deen.


    Bam! There names were locked in my memory bank.


    And, if I don't think of a way to associate their name within a few seconds of meeting them it's out of my brain. Ugh.
