Receiving end of "Is now a bad time to talk?"

I don't know if these are Jason Kanigan's clients, if it's a company wide thing,
or if the individual reps came across it here, or on YouTube, or what have you...

Anyway, I manage a hotel, and three reps in the past month have used that line
in their conversations. innroad.com ( a hotel booking engine and property management
SAAS), desk.com (a Salesforce company that does CRM), and I forgot the third.

The impact on me is positive. (I snicker a little on the inside because of the posts here.)
I greatly appreciate the courtesy and respect for my time. There are times I am
interested, but really in the middle of something important.

The only thing I would suggest is that if you do incorporate it into your conversations,
really mean it. That is to say - relax, listen and follow up at the date and time you agree to if the
prospect says that now is not a good time. Some seem to have been caught of guard
when, for example, I ask them to call this coming Tuesday between 1 PM and 3 PM
my time zone. (I can tell some are thinking they are supposed to be overcoming objections,
or something combative.)

You have to follow your "Spidey sense" as to whether it's an out or blow off, but
I do like it and wanted to give a buyer's perspective.

I do think it helps lead to enjoyable (at least not unpleasant) conversations with actual prospects
instead of unenjoyable battles with mere suspects.

Good advice - IF you are going to use it you have to follow through and NOT over-ride and try to slam dunk IF the prospect says it is a "bad time"..

nicely find a good time in a memorable way so they know it is you when you call back

Is now a bad time to talk? That hints at a negative minded person to me..

I always ask if it is a good time to talk? People usually say yes, but if it isn't then it is very easy to find out when a better time would be..

Hints to something negative to you ...

Sales 101: Never assume prospects feel the same way ( about anything you personally do )

It interferes with your logical mindset and muddies up the sales process,
making things way way more difficult for yourself.

In my case, it's never a good time to talk.
But there are times when it's not a bad time to talk and times when it's bad to talk and times when it's really, really, goddamn awful and I'd rather strangle you than talk to you.

It's never a good time to talk because I've only got 24 hours in a day and my hours only have 60 minutes in them.

But, there are times when I don't have a deadline in the immediate future, when nobody's just complained, when I don't have 3 people on hold.

You catch me when it's not a bad time to talk, I can give you a minute or two, unless you ask me if it's a good time or start yapping about the great offer you have. And know, talking louder and louder when I say, Sorry, no time, not interested, or faster, or louder and faster, doesn't change my mind, doesn't make me interested.

    It's a consultative selling thing; I didn't invent it...just use it.

There's a psychological reason to say "bad" instead of "good" and it works.

"Bad" - even though I'm now familiar from a sales training end, does make me pause and think
about whether or not I can likely give uninterrupted attention. I currently work a lot at the
front desk and know the patterns with respect to guests and employees needs.

If you say to yourself (as though you are hearing it from another person), "Is this a good time to talk?" and then, "Is this a bad time to talk?"

You'll feel the difference. It's almost impossible to say "Yes, it's a bad time to talk"....when they ask, "Is this a bad time to talk?".

I ask, "Is this a bad time to call?" Nearly always, I get some variation of, "No, I have a minute. What's this about?"

Ditto what Jason said. It sounds counter intuitive, is all. Use it when you don't want them suddenly interrupting you in the vital parts by saying they have to go into a meeting or whatnot and derailing your pitch. Or use it to gauge how much time they'll give you ("No,it's not a bad time... I have five minutes before I have to go..."). But don't use it when your call's gonna be quick and for the purpose of grabbing a bit of information because then you're in and out.
