Am I wrong to not believe in our product?

I've been doing Direct Mail Marketing for 1.5 years. I've learned tons about postage and marketing campaigns.

We've primarily worked with travel/vacation clubs. I have been given the task to grow our business.

I was cold calling for a solid month and wasn't able to gain any traction. I do believe a lot of that is me because I'm not the bubbly type of person that sounds interesting on the phone.

Previously we did nothing for lead generation and now we have 2 websites that send us leads but we're fighting them with 5 other vendors. I feel I don't have a problem closing sales but I feel I do have an issue being a prospector. I sold furniture, cable tv, and worked in collections and have done well at all my previous jobs.

I asked my boss, why don't we do any B2B Direct Mail Marketing? She said it doesn't work. We're supposed to be a lead generation company yet we don't generate any leads for us. I think this has created a mental block in my head. I'm supposed to gets (b2c) customers and sell them on mail marketing yet we don't even do it for us.

Am I wrong not to believe in our product? (sorry if this post was every were just venting and wanted some feedback)

Ouch....your boss sounds kind of short sighted or hard headed or ...you name it
I don't blame you for feeling shaky

Sometimes a biz will be very comfortable with their clients and if those clients leave? Poof

Good management would address this but it sounds like your company is not doing that

It sounds as if they are expecting YOU to figure it out - which in some ways you can do.

One thing I would start with would be networking - and let them pay for a BNI membership or other breakfast, networking group/s for you, suggest they get a table at biz expos or trade shows suitable to your offerings

If they don't want to help, you might have to do whatever networking you feel you are up for all by yourself...either way I would also gather cards, numbers, make connections, get busy on Linkedin...

This way either your sales and success with your company will pick up OR you will have a NEW job hopefully with a more supportive company?

WOW you completely hit the nail on the head with this. I feel our manager is disengaged. We're supposed to "manage up". I understand the concept of that but I really feel that it's managing my boss.

The situtaton you described is spot on. We were comfortable with 1 large client. Our mail volume was really high but the number of our customers was really low.

We lost that major client and then crap hit the fan. I thought that was so dangerous to bank on one client in one specific industry.

Now it's basically I have to figure it out and it's been a struggle. For the longest time I wanted to hit the pavement here in town and network with the people I know to try and land some jobs. I was told not to because "what if thing's don't work out, I have to see these people in person and I don't want to deal with that. (We live in a small town of about 50 to 60k residents and hearing that makes me less confident)

That's where I'm at now trying to have an online presence and create work for myself that way.

Wow it sounds like you need to be networking for a new J.O.B.
