Building a PPC agency, where to begin?

Hi guys,

So I'm building a site/ agency around showing off my (small and growing) portfolio to ppc clients.

To be honest, advertising IRL to businesses is going to be a big step for me. I want to start small, with a few clients, and then scale up (working around a 9-5 job).

I've mainly had experience on elance and upwork so far.

For someone like me just starting out in the offline client game, any advice for effective advertising strategies to bring clients in? Positioning, focus?

appreciate the help!

Use ppc to gain ppc client, would that work? The problem with inbound PPC or SEO leads is that most are in comparing mode, which makes the leads kinda warmish. Hard to provide value sometimes when they won't even give you time of day. Most just ask for a quote without letting you do any consultative selling.

    Is that what you're feeling?

Thinking of building up a client base by giving out initial audits free of charge, then upselling them afterwards.

You could add your service to your email sig, then go about helping people here with genuine offline / adwords questions.

Not sure that offering free and trying to then up sell is a great way to do things / long term at least, it may be better to offer a reduced rate for initial set up or to evaluate / fix existing clients campaigns that at least cover your time and costs.

Offering free everybody can play, may lead to an influx of free be seekers / cheap clients, and without doubt these people will always want more for less and blame as to why their keywords are not converting yesterday, even though their landing pages look like 1980 and stink like the tip combined with poor relevance costing the keyword score and your clients more money to run.

To top that off they will then want you to tell them how to fix and design landing pages, throw their hands in the air and then expect you help or fix it at no charge because it will be your fault it does not work.

Long story short stay away from free if possible and charge a reasonable price to keep the bottom feeders away / they will cost you money and frustrated time, and have a clear standing that additional work such as landing page etc. are a separate cost to work with if work is required.

There's lots of ways, and like said, one issue with generating ppc clients (and with other niches) from doing ppc is more of a comparison shopper if not using the right keywords, so you need to do one of 3 things...

    1-Very targeted keywords or...

2-Simply turn that prospect into a lead by offer something small for free or a small priced "bait" audit or competition report, etc....then move up the ladder to your services. Or...

3-simply come at a different angle. Look at your ideal customers, where at, offer something for free similiar to your niche but not similar, then offer your services on your list to them because after all they are your perfect customers and related.

When I was doing client work for my marketing company, I attracted buisness from all different ways, rememebr the most dangerous in business is 1. 1 marketing method, 1 sales method, 1 customer, 1 lead, etc...

The key is in your current portfolio.

Case studies of what you did for them and especially if they are willing to take a call as a reference can be most of what you need.

Rather than randomly blasting the internet laser target your efforts to similar clients that have problems that you are expert at fixing.

You could also develop an irresistible no risk offer.

For example you could target those that spend 10k+/month on ad spend but are pretty much doing it themselves and tell them you will handle their ppc for a month free of charge. If you don't decrease their bounce rate, decrease their average cpc and increase their conversions you will give them X.

You can laser target on LinkedIn or simply hunt for campaigns that are flawed. Things like crappy or non existent landing pages etc.. or buying what should be negative keywords etc...
