What are the best Job Titles to contact when selling Marketing Consulting to businesses?

I'm buying a mailing list of B2C companies, $1-10M/revenue, 11-100 employees and I'm curious what you have found in your experience.

    Keep it simple and 'Marketing Consultant'. That's how I land clients. They seem to like that title.

    ? I think he means who to "ask" for or who to mail/email to

    my best bet is "owner" - can make decision

    in corporate I would try for as "high" as you can go

    I would avoid the "marketing" director - tho they will try to push you off on them...

    why avoid? well cause essentially you will be overriding their job,maybe "replacing" part of their "job" etc....they can be very quick to say "we are all set"
    likewise avoid board member or any financial person

      You're right. I misread.

      In that case, my answer is: don't ask for anyone in particular. Go with, I don't know who to I should be talking to, can you tell me who handles xyz ? approach.

    If you have seen the business use a service, this is a natural in.

    For example, you may have seen the business in the PennySaver.. When you call, you say, " Hi, Could you tell me who handles your ads for the PennySaver?" Person on phone says that's the owner. You say, " What was their name again?

    Some smaller businesses are less formal and do not always have the job titles you would expect.. Some are really simple and go by Owner, GM, Manager, & Assistant Manager. Some are less formal than that and when you ask who makes your marketing decisions, they may say something like,." Oh that would be Bob." When you ask what is Bob's title?, the answer might be, " Oh, he's the computer guy."

    You could always call the company's sales line, talk to a sales person, and ask them who takes care of getting them new leads for their business?

    The sales people will know who REALLY makes the decisions about marketing, advertising, and helping them make money.

    That's the kicker there ? as best we have it here a consultant advises people on what when where but does not do any of the work in a true consulting sense.

    So as a person who advises business on marketing, to then say who do I ask probably blows the whole system out of the water.

    To many people over think these things and complicate the work they are trying to do, and as many have said just call, explain who you are, what you do and ask who is the correct person to speak with, rather than getting tied up in a bunch of fancy titles that may or may not mean anything.

    Titles like Marketing Consultant, Strategist are much simpler and they do work great in real life, I see these kinda folks all around FB making big bucks..

    Looks like a few have missed the point here since it sounds like you're buying a mailing list not just cold calling these people - using something like InfoUSA.

    Owners, CEOs are all good, but if you're going for a very large company you may want to be careful with going for the marketing department as said earlier, don't want them to feel like they're getting squeaked out of their jobs. Instead, business development people might be a good shot, as well as purchasing managers since they often are go-to people with the money for 3rd party vendors.

    It can be a maze though, the best bet is to buy several lists within the same industry and test/track which position is actually able to make the decision of giving you money for your services.

    That's been my brief experience so far in that realm

    Business development has worked best for us, they're generally by default hunters so when they get these opportunities falling into their lap for marketing services it's generally a plus for them.
