How would you sell them?

Gotta start making them this month so they ripen nicely.

I'm thinking a nice brochure but that doesn't seem like enough.

What do you all think?

    • A while back I did some consulting for a company in Canada that sold just Fruit Cakes... for the life of me I can not find a link to the page. However... I would develop an online ordering system. This is one of those things that could turn into startup cottage industry type stuff.

      I would do the flea markets etc. I would have a brochure. I would make sure any and every piece of advertising collateral had the web address. If you were feeling overly entrepreneurial I would venture into Facebook and twitter as a form of advertising. I might even consider a more "corporate" packaging and get into LinkedIn as well.

      Packaging at this point becomes a major consideration. I might start here: Bakery Boxes, Cake Boxes, Pizza Bakery - Bakery Boxes - Bakery.

      The next consideration becomes shipping, I would consider USPS flat rate and specifically the Regional B box such as: https://store.usps.com/store/browse/...pping-supplies

  • 1) Create a stunning product presentation page

    2) Contact companies with a brilliantly written proposal about providing dessert for their Christmas parties.

    3) Profit.


    Or, my favorite idea, come up with some weird custom ordering option online that could send orders viral. For example "Fruit cake made with vegetables" "sad fruit cakes" (just design some fruitcakes with cute/sad faces and watch www.sadfruitcake.com get shared god damn everywhere), or have an option to send a terrible fruitcake to your enemy alongside a normal/good one to your friends.

    Go crazy with it, but be prepared for volume if one of those ideas picks up traction.

  • Approach any local food markets, restaurants, bake shops, and any place where they sell cakes and bakeries. Even though they may have their own cakes to sell some are always looking for something new to add to their menu, especially if it's just through the Christmas season.


    Cold Call - If you don't want to meet up with any biz owners upfront by walking inside of their home, my best recommendation is just to cold call and ask for their manager. Ask if they have any special upcoming cakes being made for the holiday season, and then ask them if they would be interested in your Christmas fruit cakes. Those who are interested would gladly accept a few samples, and then make them before you have your initial in person appointment. Hopefully this will help you get some more ideas flowing.

    • Small packaged samples would work. I like the flea market idea. Also local churches and community events... Event planners may also be a good partnership. Think who likes fruit cakes... usually older folks. Your best bet is to access a group network. This will help you leverage better.

  • I love the idea of cold calling and asking if they would like a sample of my cakes. I'm thinking the flea markets and maybe some local marketing ads will help as well.

    My fruit cakes are awesome -- I think my city will agree.
