Knew nothing... then made $1700 in a day via Craigslist

So very new here and I recently posted up looking for solutions to post on Craigslist because I heard this made money quick.

At first it was very difficult, as many people told me. I looked into getting my own PVAs and such, hoping to cut costs, but quickly realized the difficulty in getting my ads live. I had a sponsor willing to pay me two bucks per live ad, so I knew the money was there, but I couldn't get to it.

I tried freelancers on every possible website, including here. Not to name any names, but I wouldn't go down that route if anyone thinks about it. The language barrier is a disaster.

Anyways, despite the fact that I don't have a family or girlfriend, my bank account was getting empty throwing money into this Craigslist ordeal. But I heard about this proxy IP thing, at this point I knew this probably was the issue, and I thought I'd give it one last, final shot. I finally did it and the money is rolling in. The first day I posted fifty live and since then I've been expanding like crazy. I'm now twenty seven proxies deep and almost all my savings but I did it.

There is hope everyone. I just wanted to post this to let everyone know that there is hope in making money on Craigslist. Don't give up. Never give up. It's there and all you have to do is take it!

Much thanks to Warrior forum and everyone who's helped me come this far. Whoot!!

Craigslist is a gold mine and has helped me make a pretty solid income each month a few years back or so, just a lot of work initially to put in but overall it most definitely works. Good job and good luck on your online income. You should create an ebook for other warriors to see how youve done it! Cheers.

You're absolutely right! I'm going to think it through and try to get some sort of guide up. If anyone is having issues with it, shoot me a question and I'll try to answer the question as best as possible.

You told us where you sold, and if that worked that's great for you! However, inquiring minds wonder what you were selling on there. Web design, logos, SEO, coaching, or maybe something non-marketing related?

As I said in the main post, I was advertising for sponsors who would take over that aspect of the business (SEO, selling, landing page optimizations). My only job is to get the leads.

Don't lose hope guys! It's definitely possible to make money via CL ( a lot of money ). Just takes patience and trial/error. Happy to answer any other CL questions.

Yes, you mentioned sponsors, but I don't see where you say what they did. Glad to know what types of business you were putting out there successfully. Good for you. Thanks for clarifying.

Obviously your plan was to put lots of ads out there. Let's say that you had an SEO company that sponsored you. Did you focus on putting one ad per market in lots of different markets, or do you just hammer a couple of markets with a lot of ads hoping to get noticed? I've always wondered which is more effective. I always thought that people that put up multiple ads per day (sometimes 10-20 or more) in one city looked desperate, but maybe that works.

One ad per market in lots of different markets is MUCH more effective for a few concrete reasons:

        1) Higher live rate. Machine learning algorithms will bias against certain keywords if they see the same keyword over and over. Spreading out your ads across different markets is much more realistically plausible than 1 market with many ads of the same keyword.
        2) Diversification of leads. On average, you simply get more leads posting in 2 markets than posting in 1 market 2 times throughout the day.
        3) Looks desperate - but then agian, it depends on what you're selling.

I agree with many ads spread out over different markets. I target the top 50 based on Alexa rankings and it nets me a jaw-dropping amount of leads.

My sponsors were advertising for [redacted] advised not to mention my niches [/redacted]. There are many others though (that was just the biggest one).

There are SO many opportunities to make online income on Craigslist, it's completely ridiculous. You just need to figure out how to do it.

There are so many technical hurdles and I think that people focus on the wrong pieces when they want to get an ad live.

I thought I read you were doing SEO, then I see you are doing leads, then I see you are selling your advertising gig for the leads it generates. I am getting confused here, but I was about to jump on this as a client to buy SEO leads till I saw what type of ads you are posting. I would have liked Digital marketing consulting client leads.

Sorry for the confusion.. I have a number of sponsors.

They range from the big guys trying to find more leads to smaller local businessesThe market is so vast, it's incredible.

To be honest, I should be developing my SEO / SEM skills and landing page optimizations etc. But selling leads has been so profitable lately..

Can you speak a bit about your techniques for getting ads to stick? I find myself having a lot of issues when it comes to getting stuff live?
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10525790].message }}

Sure, I started off same as you, struggling to get my ads live and sticking. Just deletion, after deletion after deletion. The GOOD news is that once you figure out general rules, you can really start scaling your ads.

Now, I have my own automated system

    My advice:
    1) IP solution: do you have one? Proxies / VPN and TOR will NOT work - these are very, very obvious to detect. Like laughably easy. Most proxies are hosted in datacenters which is very easy to separate from, say, a real residential IP

    2) Browser / operating system: Switch them up between accounts. There are simple things like the useragent that are detectable, but also some more insidious things like WebRTC (look it up if you don't know)

    3) Content: by far the most overlooked aspect. You don't want to keep repeating the same keywords. Find ways to say stuff differently. Oh, also I know that spinning works for some people but it's a very easy way to get flagged haha

    4) Cookies/cache: clear them between session obviously. Also watch out for PERSISTENT cookies that persist even after wiping the session. Google supercookies if you don't know.

There are a lot of tricks I didn't want to mention (and post publicly about). If you're curious, PM me and I'll share as best as I can.

So, what your writing is all of the VPNs like Hide My Ass are easily detected? If this is indeed true, there are a lot of Marketers and SEO Folks out there smashing their heads against a wall....... Interesting.

Hidemyass does keep logs, Read lulzsec story. Always consider logless vpns and one of my friend who live in china (the most censored country in the world), using totalvpn. Other useful vpn services are listed here

I understand HMA may keep internal logs... That provides "trace-ability" in the event of illegal activity. I'm not interested in doing anything illegal.

But, I'm not seeing how HMA's internal logs impact posting to Craig's List with HMA....

If one is trying to post to Craig's List, how does Craig's List know to block one's posts when using HMA's VPN.... assuming those IPs have not been flagged by Craig's List?

I have been fiddling with Craigslist for the past few months and feel like I'm almost there with getting my ads live. I follow Craigslist TOS and I post only every 48 hours. It's such a gold mine!

I am a marketer by training. How would you recommend getting started with Craigslist quickly and easily without needing to know all this technical stuff?

I see a lot of freelancers on these forums + on freelancing sites offering to post. But they all seem very, very dubious....

Think through it logically. You only really have a few options on making money off Craigslist ads:

    1) Hire a freelancer to do it: BAD IDEA. For so many reasons - bad communication / language barriers. Even the US-based ones often cannot get ads to stick and will still bill you PRETENDING they are live. BAD IDEA. Trust me. Very hard to manage at scale.

    2) Automated system: Works but VERY hard to find. The good ones are almost always not public-facing but private.

    3) Do it yourself: very time-consuming. Unless you're willing to spend hours troubleshooting and thinking through the technical hoops, this option is a non-starter. Plus, you have a business to focus on.

For me personally, I started really pulling in cash with 2) and 3). Of course, your mileage will vary.

Yes, I've tried freelancers here and there and I got scammed many times. Or bad communication. Or they asked me to front money. It was a nightmare.

As I said before, I'm not looking to do it myself, so I guess that would only leave option 2..... Can I PM you about your system? Appreciate it, thank you

It depends on the account and its attributes. Think age, live ratio, content rating. I suggest reading papers on how Gmail's early filters worked. They would assign a "reputation" to each account.

Some accounts for me can post 7-8/day live but they usually get put on hold very quickly. Other accounts can barely post anything. You need to follow the Craigslist TOS to get optimal posting rates.

I disagree... I have had accounts post that much every day and it's doing fine. Obviously, it differs by niche, though.

Amazing information on this thread. I have a few questions for the successful Craigslist posters here.

I only post once every 48 hours with my 1 account. I get leads but I would like more:

    - What was the ramp-up time for being able to scale up your postings?
    - How did you find your automated solution? Any tips for an eager marketer?
    - How should I write my content? Is that a problem for you when you scale leads?

      - Ramp-up time depends on how fast you can scale your content. That really was the bottleneck for me. I ended up hiring groups and groups of writers to feed into my system to get my ads up and live.

NOTE: It is hard to tell if your writers are "cheating" you. They could be copy and pasting from an existing site. The best way to detect this is to copy and paste what they send you into Google with quotes. If it's on Google, Craigslist can find it.

      - Message me. These things aren't generally public for good reason. Loose lips sink ships.

      - Answered above.

Good question. I generally have two different types of payment structures for companies that are already lined up.

The first is for companies that just want to see qualified volume. They will usually pay by the live ad and then factor in the average lead per ad by themselves.

The second type is for more organized companies that charge by the lead, where a "lead" is determined upon agreement. For instance, one of my clients only considers a lead to be someone who calls and is on the line for 5-10 minutes. Another client considers a lead to be someone who is on the line AND presses a number to hear more information.

In my experience, it is quite hard for most clients to have structured lead accounting like this so most default to the first payment structure.

Since I have my own posting system running, all clients also pay a monthly recurring fee for customer support. Recurring monthly is great because I always have a baseline of net profits. I would not do sales commission... profits are too unpredictable unless I have enough clients that it can smooth out.

The reason that I insisted on only posting twenty live for you IS because bad content impacts my accounts.

Most of my clients work with freelancers and writesr that I have vetted before. Bad content brings down the reputation of all my accounts.

So I would advise you to jump on some freelancing websites and find a few good writers if you want to continue posting.

What to buy and how to do it - start with your basic IP solution (residential, proxies etc.). Figure that out first. Then get the PVAs and post at a small scale. Once you have determined that that works, you can scale from there.

linda051, you must always take responsibility for your content.

The clients I post for always have to be pre-screened that their content won't completely ruin my accounts. I post in the personals and gigs section which are medium-to-high level toughness, so this is critical to the workflow.

I'm actually still looking for more clients. Shameless plug: if anybody is interested in SUCCESSFUL Craigslist posting, contact me for a trial. I am a pro and you can look through my posting history to prove that.

It generally depends on the section and volume. I tell this to clients, but I don't like to make promises I can't keep, primarily because it depends so much on client content.

A lot of times people don't have their content solution figured out. Well, no amount of posting technique / services will be able to get ads live if you have crappy content.

I would say that's a BIG reason why ads get deleted: bad content. To the geeks out there, I imagine that the filtering is some kind of Naive Bayes model on n-grams... so the more it sees "bad" keywords, the worse your account reputation gets.

What would you recommend for someone posting in a moderately difficult section who has original content?

        Struggling and not sure.

The most important factors to the CL filtering system are:
          - content/images
          - IP solution
          - fingerprinting
          - timing / frequency of posting

Usually the 4th point doesn't matter for the first post, so if your first posts are getting deleted and you have original content it is your IP or fingerprinting that is raising a red flag. In that case, I would try different browsers and OS with the same source of original content.

Usually the 4th point doesn't matter for the first post, so if your first posts are getting deleted and you have original content it is your IP or fingerprinting that is raising a red flag. In that case, I would try different browsers and OS with the same source of original content.
Yes, my ads are getting flagged on first post, which seems to indicate a huge problem. I have original content. I will try switching up the browsers / OS thanks.

How much do you usually post for (cost-wise)?

Has anyone tried services like RDSL? I've seen several craigslist people using them with huge results.

Great information ! I have a question though, I am noticing posts keep going down if I renew or renew too fast.

As far as renewing goes, how long do you wait before renewing as well as how many a day?

If one is trying to post to Craig's List, how does Craig's List know to block one's posts when using HMA's VPN.... assuming those IPs have not been flagged by Craig's List?
Craigslist knows when IPs from certain high profile services like HMA have been used to post. They even can detect when certain virtual phone services like CallFire are in your ads. Do not underestimate how sophisticated their ad filters are.

Craigslist is great! I know many entrepreneurs that use craigslist everyday and make a killing! I think it is very undervalued and underrated.

This has been a really interesting read! Thanks so much for posting on this. I thought craigslist was basically not worth the effort these days, but this proves me well wrong. Very eye opening indeed!

I read posts a few years ago about to use Craiglist as free traffic generator. I tried but with less success. Probaly I used in the wrong way. I will try again in the right way now.

Hi, first of all, sorry for reviving an older thread but this thread has perhaps the most helpful technical information on WF so I was hoping I could start a discussion again.

After much trial and error, I believe I have something working now. Not quite $1700 that ExMachina was making, but my niche is pretty good and I am trying to scale up posts. I am about 50-75 ads/day in the cars & trucks section.

What is the best strategy for posting content? What about the best IP solution?

I think most of us here are very curious to know thank you in advance, everyone.

Can you tell me more about how you managed to go from zero to little posts at all to posting 50-75 ads/day?? Especially in a difficult section like cars & trucks. Would you recommend going with a freelancer?

A lot of what was mentioned here helped me in my quest to find a better CL posting solution. Mainly the fact that CL can detect a lot of the quality of IPs and block you. It's tough to find a good IP!

A lot of people I have talked to on other forums say it is impossible to post on CL consistently. Do you agree or disagree? And could you elaborate more on your methodologies?

Also! I'd generally love to hear more about how you went from 0 to 50-75 ads/days as my other post says

Good to know you found a way to succeed by keeping on trying . . . a lot of newbies try one way, then just quit.

I've heard that some businesses get most of their clients or customers from CL, so it certainly seems to be working for some people.

I did get CL posting done well by an outsourcer from UpWork (then oDesk), but that was a few years ago and things might have changed a bit. That guy posted a different post for me every day of the week, in one city, and did what I asked OK. I never made much money from it, but the CL posting worked OK

    thanks for your post !

    Chris

    Thanks! This helps a lot.

With regards to good content, how do you write your content? Do you spin it or do you write it yourself? If you're posting 75 ads/day, it must get tedious to keep writing new content!
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[10837105].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author mrkhan21
I have never come across a good spinner that worked consistently... I have tried WordAI among other things and it just doesn't work.
Maybe stfenhuse can help with some advice here...

Interesting, so then are you writing everything by-hand? That sounds.... tedious and not a good use of time lol

how about using images, and they all show the same, yet at different file and graphic size,
so no technical duplicates , only if a real person looks at it? Does that work?

George, that's definitely part of what helps in not leaving a campaign footprint! I've used several techniques like that to avoid being tracked across campaigns and it has worked well.

Yes, image dimensions and file size are critical to the "fingerprint" that you leave when posting on CL.

    Watch out for:
    - image size (these should be different)
    - image dimensions (easily able to be tracked)
    - image name

    Maybe less important
    - EXIF data from digital cameras / phones etc.

    Not important
    - image filepath (unless you have the setting in your browser to reveal the filepath, but most by default do not have that on)
