Toll-free phone # - worth it for nationally focused businesses?

Assuming your business is only focused on national sales (only selling within your specific country) and not world-wide, is there any value in having a toll-free phone # these days?

I don't know anyone that doesn't have a cell phone or a landline/VOIP/Broadband phone plan that doesn't have national long distance calling included (free).

Allowing them to call your toll-free # only costs you money since you have to pick up the tab for the call even though they have a free national long distance plan. It turns into being an unnecessary expense for you business when they could have called you at no cost in the first place.

So what is the point/value in having a toll-free # if doing business nationally (not internationally)?

  • It will definitely go a long way in making your business look more professional.

Considering how competitive business can get, you need all the small advantages you can get.
  • Yeah, that seems to be the only reason I can think of myself. But to me personally, as a consumer, toll free #'s don't convey professionalism. But I'm probably biased because I know how easy they are for anyone to get...even scammers.

And a little off-topic: I also think that in a case where your target is very localized to a city or small region of a cluster of cities/towns, I think that displaying a # with a local area code is actually better in that it makes you look like you really are local.

I think you would be better off re posting this in the Offline sub section you may get more answers by a lot more experienced warriors like Writeway

    • Initially I was going to do that, but displaying phone #'s are such a big component of online business anymore given the shear amount of scammers that I decided to post here instead.
